How was security bill passed sans protest: Cong to CLP neta
Mumbai: The Maharashtra Congress has sought an explanation from the party's legislature body on the passage of the special public security bill in the assembly last week without any protest from the party. State party chief Harshwardhan Sapkal wrote a letter to Congress legislature party leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Monday to explain how the bill was allowed to be passed without Congress registering its opposition, sources said on Thursday. Sapkal has sought an explanation from Wadettiwar on directives of the party high command, they said. Talking to reporters, Wadettiwar admitted he has been asked to give an explanation and said he was not aware the bill was to be taken up in the assembly on July 10 - the day he was in his home district Chandrapur for a bank election - otherwise he would have "torn" the bill. The bill, which has stringent provisions, including hefty fines and jail term up to seven years for those who are found guilty, has sparked criticism from some civil society groups and the opposition parties, who view it as a tool to suppress dissent under the pretext of national security. "But our CLP leader remained absent that day," a source said. The next day, Congress MLCs protested and staged a walkout in the Upper House after voicing opposition to the bill, as the party issued a strict directive that what happened in the assembly should not be repeated in the council, sources said. On June 30, when All India Congress Committee's Maharashtra in-charge Ramesh Chennithala called a meeting of state party leaders, it was decided to oppose the bill. But in the assembly, only the lone CPI (M) MLA opposed the bill.

BJP has polarised religion, now they are trying to polarise language: Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal
New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): Amidst the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, state Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal hit out at the BJP and alleged that they were trying to polarise the language. Harshwardhan Sapkal said, 'The BJP keeps cursing the word secularism every day. Secularism is a necessity for the country and its culture. Secularism is not only used for language but also equality and caste. States also use secularism. Secularism is used for language also. BJP has no concern about secularism so they are trying to create rift in between 22 languages in the country. Unity in Diversity has a direct connection with secularism, and both concepts are related to language and culture. They have already caused polarisation based on caste and religion. Now they are trying to polarise language as well.' He further said that the BJP believes in one country, one leader, one religion, one language and before this, the BJP has created a rift in religion and caste. Earlier, addressing the issue of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers being detained in Mumbai, Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday stated that everyone has the right to protest in the country. 'Everyone has the right to protest. We don't know why the BJP is anti-Maharashtra and anti-Marathi, and why people were arrested last night. There was a peaceful protest. They should have allowed it. Everyone has the right to protest', he said. Aaditya Thackeray noted that the BJP is trying to spread 'hatred' and create conflicts between 'Marathi and non-Marathi people,' he said. He further stated that the 'BJP's divisive agenda,' ahead of the BMC and Bihar elections, would not succeed. 'The BJP is trying to spread hatred in Maharashtra and create conflicts between Marathi and non-Marathi people. Their agenda won't work. Their agenda for the Bihar and BMC elections is to create division. This is the BJP's tactic, and it won't succeed', he said. (ANI)

Hindi in schools: Sapkal dubs it BJP-RSS agenda to sideline Marathi, end linguistic diversity
'This is not merely about a language policy. The BJP-RSS agenda is to erase all other languages and impose Hindi hegemony across the nation. But we will not allow Marathi to be throttled. This deceitful design will be defeated. We respect Hindi as a language, but coercion is unacceptable. Marathi is not just our language. It is our identity and way of life,' Sapkal told reporters. On June 17, the Maharashtra government issued a GR making Hindi the third language, though not mandatory, for students of Classes 1 to 5 in English and Marathi medium schools. Mumbai, Jun 28 (PTI) The Maharashtra government's decision to introduce Hindi in schools from Class I is a conspiracy by the BJP-RSS to sideline Marathi and eliminate linguistic diversity enshrined in the Constitution, alleged state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal on Saturday. He said the Congress has reached out to prominent literary figures through letters asking them to put up a united front to ensure the state government is forced to revoke the order on Hindi. Accusing the ruling BJP of duplicity, Sapkal questioned why Hindi is not a compulsory language in neighbouring Gujarat. 'Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and (minister) Chandrashekhar Bawankule must speak about these double standards,' he said. Sapkal said all sections of society must take part in the protest against the Hindi order as it is a 'cultural struggle and not just a political battle'. The opposition parties have accused the ruling BJP of pursuing a hidden agenda through the three-language policy to give precedence to Hindi over regional languages, including Marathi.
