Second Harvest ready to kick off Harvest for Hunger to fight food insecurity
Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio is set to launch its annual Harvest for Hunger campaign, aiming to provide 3.6 million meals for food-insecure residents across the region. The campaign will begin March 1 and run through the end of June, according to an announcement. The initiative is a significant effort for Second Harvest, as it provides one-third of the food distributed throughout the year, according to Julie Chase-Morefield, president and CEO of Second Harvest. The campaign will kick off with a happy hour 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Second Harvest, 5510 Baumhart Road, Lorain. The event will feature comments from this year's honorary chairperson, Vic Gregovits, president and partner of the Lake Erie Crushers Baseball Team. Guests can enjoy refreshments, win raffle prizes and learn more about the campaign. Grocery stores, including Giant Eagle, Heinen's and Buehler's Fresh Foods, and GetGo gas stations, will support the campaign through Check Out Hunger at their cash registers. Media partners, local companies, businesses, organizations and civic clubs also will play a critical role by running food and fund drives. For 34 years, Harvest for Hunger has raised essential funds to provide nutritious food for local hunger relief organizations in 21 counties in Northeast Ohio. Second Harvest organizes the campaign in partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Food Bank and Second Harvest of the Mahoning Valley. 'During these unstable and uncertain times, our community is turning to us for help and hope,' Chase-Morefield said in the announcement. 'This campaign allows us to continue to be there when our neighbors need us. Please help if you can! Every $1 raised can provide six meals to our community.' Individuals or organizations interested in supporting Harvest for Hunger can donate online at or contact Lisa Camp at 440-434-2444.
