Manesar all set to host first-ever national conference on urban local bodies
Chandigarh, July 2 (UNI) In a first, two-day national conference on the theme 'The Strong Role of Urban Local Bodies in Constitutional Democracy and Nation Building' is scheduled to be held from July 3 at the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) in Haryana. Manesar under Gurugram district with its rich cultural heritage, is fully prepared to extend a grand welcome to delegates from across the country. Divulging more details in this regard, Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram, Ajay Kumar said that the conference will be inaugurated on Thursday, July 3, by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker Harvinder Kalyan has been consistently reviewing the preparations. The Secretary General, Lok Sabha, Utpal Kumar Singh will also be present during the inaugural session. The session will also be graced by the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, and Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister Vipul Goel. The Deputy Commissioner further informed that Mayors, Commissioners, and other representatives from Municipal Corporations nationwide will participate in the conference. On the first day of the conference, best practices adopted by leading Indian cities - Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Indore, Lucknow, Pune, Surat, and Visakhapatnam will be presented. Following this, five workshops will be held on different sub-themes, including, the role of Urban Local Bodies as the foundation of democracy, Developing ideal practices and codes of conduct for council meetings, Local bodies as engines of inclusive development, Strengthening municipal governance, Innovation hubs to improve citizen quality of life and public service delivery, Empowering women, preparing them for leadership roles in society and politics as builders of 21st century India. Kumar further stated that on Friday, July 4, the programme will include group presentations on sub-themes, an informal dialogue with the Lok Sabha Speaker, and a concluding session. The closing session will be attended by Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatraya, and Deputy Speaker, Haryana Vidhan Sabha, Dr Krishan Lal Middha. He said that this conference will not only define the future direction of urban governance in India but also strengthen the country's democratic and developmental journey. UNI XC SSP

Lok Sabha Speaker to inaugurate two-day conference of Urban Local Bodies chairpersons
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will inaugurate the National Level Conference of Chairpersons of Urban Local Bodies in the States and Union Territories in the International Centre for Automotive Technology, Manesar, Gurugram, Haryana on July 3. Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, Manohar Lal; Chief Minister, Haryana, Nayab Singh; Speaker, Haryana Vidhan Sabha, Harvinder Kalyan and other dignitaries will grace the Inaugural Session. According to an official release, the theme of the Conference is the 'Role of Urban Local Bodies in Strengthening Constitutional Democracy and Nation Building'. During the two-day Conference, delegates from across India will deliberate on critical issues, including developing model practices and procedures, the code of conduct for General Council meetings, and understanding Urban Local Bodies as foundational pillars of democracy. Further deliberation would be conducted on enhancing municipal governance to make it more effective in fulfilling the constitutional mandate, as part of understanding Urban Local Bodies as engines of inclusive growth and development. Contribution to helping achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047. Urban Local Bodies as vehicles of empowerment of women - Role in grooming women for leadership positions in society and polity. Moreover, the deliberations would focus on improving public delivery and enhancing the quality of life for citizens. The proceedings on July 4, 2025, will commence with the presentations by the five groups on their respective sub-themes. The valedictory session on July 4 will be graced by Bandaru Dattatraya, Governor of Haryana, who will address the distinguished gathering. Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha Harivansh; Speaker, Haryana Vidhan Sabha Harvinder Kalyan and other dignitaries will remain present on the occasion. A Show Round of Prena Sthal, Samvidhan Sadan and Parliament House will also be held for the delegates on the concluding day of the Conference. The Conference aims to serve as an important platform for outlining the important role of Urban Local Bodies in a rapidly urbanising country. It aims to strengthen democratic institutions, share best practices, and explore and highlight innovative approaches to urban governance in the contemporary era. (ANI)

Prayer meet remembers Karnal naval officer killed in Baisaran
Thousands of mourners from different walks of life gathered to pay their final respects to Naval Officer Lt Vinay Narwal during a prayer meeting organised in his memory in Karnal on Sunday. The meeting, held at Dr Mangal Sen Auditorium, witnessed huge crowd. Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker Harvinder Kalyan; Suman Saini, wife of chief minister Nayab Singh Saini; MLAs Jagmohan Anand and Yogender Rana; mayor Renu Bala Gupta; AITF chief Viresh Shandilya; officers from Indian Navy; administrative officials and others were present. The slain officer's widow, Himanshi, his parents Rajesh and Aasha, sat in silent grief, while his twin sister Srishti Narwal addressed the gathering on behalf of the family. She shared childhood anecdotes how they loved watching their favourite movie 'LOC: Kargil' and Vinay would say, '....Srishti, one day your brother will also come wrapped in a tricolor. I would scold him,' she said. Srishti also shared that Vinay used to surprise the family by visiting them unannounced while he was studying, but they were never ready for this shocking surprise. Kalyan said that the loss to the family is irreparable, but the Centre, state governments and the society stand with the family. During her emotional address, Suman Saini said, 'In this hour of grief, the whole of state and the country stands with the family.' MLA Anand read condolence messages from CM Saini and Union power minister and Karnal MP Manohar Lal. Similar messages from Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi were also read at the meeting.
