Three COVID-19 patients die in Indore in 48 hours; no need to panic, says official

Indore: Three women who had tested positive for COVID-19 infection died here within two days, a health official said on Tuesday while clarifying that they were suffering from other serious ailments and there was no cause for panic. A 64-year-old woman and a 55-year-old woman died on Sunday, while a 50-year-old woman died on Monday, said district Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani. "All three women were already suffering from different diseases due to which their immunity had decreased. These included diseases like blood cancer, TB, diabetes and thyroid disorder," said the CMHO. "At present, only seven COVID-19 patients are undergoing treatment in the district. We did not find a single case of the epidemic on Tuesday. There is no need to panic," he said. Since January 1, a total of 187 residents of the district have been found infected with coronavirus, of which four died during treatment. "The first death of a COVID-19 patient in the district this year was recorded on April 21, when a 74-year-old woman died in hospital. She was suffering from a serious kidney ailment," said Dr Hasani.>

Teacher arrested for molesting disabled student

REMBAU: A teacher at a secondary school was arrested yesterday on suspicion of molesting a 16-year-old female student with intellectual disabilities. The incident is believed to have occurred around 10.40am on May 5 in the school's treatment room after the victim complained of leg pain shortly after a cross-country activity. District police chief Superintendent Hasani Hussain said the 36-year-old teacher allegedly forced the victim to sit down before massaging her legs, calves and thighs, and touching sensitive areas, despite the victim's refusal. "The victim then informed a classmate about the incident before lodging a complaint with a special education teacher on June 30. "A police report was lodged at 5.15pm yesterday before the suspect was arrested at 10pm the same day in the compound of the Rembau district police headquarters," he said. Hasani added that during questioning, the suspect denied committing the act, but an investigation paper has been opened under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. The victim is the second of five siblings and has been living in a children's protection home since last year after being a victim of sexual assault by a known individual.

Police open three investigation papers over Plus highway obstruction

REMBAU: Police have opened three investigation papers and arrested a man believed to be the owner of one of three vehicles involved in a recent traffic obstruction incident on the southbound stretch of the North-South Expressway (Plus), near the Pedas Linggi lay-by. Rembau district police chief Superintendent Hasani Hussain said the suspect, in his 50s, was arrested in the Seremban area at about 12.30am today. "We are still tracking down the remaining suspects, who are currently at large. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is a vehicle repossession agent. The group is believed to have briefly blocked the road while attempting to repossess a car. "They reportedly obstructed traffic for only a short duration," he said when contacted. Hasani said the case is being investigated under Section 279 of the Penal Code for negligent or reckless driving, which carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. The case is also being investigated under Section 341 of the Penal Code for wrongful obstruction of public passage, which provides for up to one month's jail, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both. Additionally, police have initiated a probe under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing obstruction on the road. If convicted, offenders face a fine of between RM1,000 and RM5,000, and may have their driving licence suspended for up to 12 months. "Police take any form of disruption to traffic flow seriously. Such actions pose a danger to other road users, particularly on highways where vehicles travel at high speeds. "Not only are such acts unlawful, but they also have the potential to cause fatal accidents," he added. Those with information about the incident are urged to assist in the investigation by contacting criminal investigation officer Inspector Noor Fathiah Ak'Dilah Ishak at 010-5825384, Traffic Investigation Officer Sergeant Siti Nur Balqes Abdul Rahim at 019-7992519, or the Rembau district police operations room at 06-6851999.
