Titans in more pain with skipper out for a month
Gold Coast's quest to win coach Des Hasler's 500th NRL match as a mentor just got much harder. Captain and prop Tino Fa'asuamaleaui will miss Saturday's away clash against the Warriors with a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury suffered in the 21-20 loss to Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday. The last-placed Titans are looking down the barrel of a third wooden spoon in their 18-year history and the loss of the Test and Queensland forward is the last thing they needed. Prop Moeaki Fotuaika said it was up to his teammates to lift in Hasler's milestone game. "I spoke to Tino this morning and he is in high spirits but obviously disappointed," Fotuaika said on Tuesday. "He is our captain and he is a massive loss. A few of us are going to have to step up." The Titans lost to the Tigers with 17 seconds remaining courtesy of an Adam Doueihi field goal after they led 20-16 in the 77th minute. They played what Hasler called "dumb football" and paid the price. "It was a tough one to take after we got so close. I thought we defended our tryline well but ill-discipline got us in the end," Fotuaika said. "We take confidence out of it. We have just got to stick together. We are going to New Zealand where we will spend a couple of days together so it is a good time to regroup against the Warriors." Video has circulated of Hasler giving his players a vitriolic dressing down in the sheds after the game, displeased with their attitude after throwing away the win. Fotuaika was asked about the coach's spray and said it was understandable. "Obviously it was disappointing getting so close," he said. "You can imagine what the feeling is in the sheds after a game like that." Fotuaika was dropped from the Queensland side for the State of Origin decider, won 24-12 by the Maroons, after playing the opening two games of the series. It has been a roller coaster ride for the front-rower over the past six weeks. "As much as it was disappointing missing out on game three it was probably a blessing in disguise for me," he said. "I had a newborn a week before game one and that Origin period takes a lot out of you, travelling and being away from family. "That week (of game three) was our bye week so I caught up with family and friends. I did go down to Sydney on the Wednesday night and to see them get the result was pleasing for me and added motivation for me to get back in that arena." Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler blows up at players in the shower
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler was not happy after his side fell to the Wests Tigers 21-20 on Sunday. The Tigers trailed 20-16 with five minutes left but levelled it up when Jeral Skelton crossed in the left corner. Doueihi would miss the subsequent sideline conversion but became the hero just minutes later. Hasler was left seething after the loss and his frustration boiled over in a fiery locker room moment that was captured on camera. As Hasler entered the rooms to address his playing group, he was left infuriated by the sounds of the showers running. The 64-year-old exploded into a fit of rage as he shouted at the players in the showers, forcing them to walk out and sit with the playing group. The vision was shown on Sunday Night with Matty Johns with Bryan Fletcher making jokes at the players who were scolded. 'I think he's blowing up because they're all showering in their undies,' Bryan Fletcher quipped. Des Hasler blows up at Titans players Hasler's frustration was just as evident during his post-match press conference as he lamented several 'dumb' mistakes by his playing group. 'It's really disappointing that in the second half we fumble, we bumble, we miss tackles, we throw balls over the sideline, we get carried over the sideline and we complete 9 from 15 sets. 'I'm really disappointed in that performance. It was really dumb. 'We didn't need luck. There was the scrum penalty and three knock ons that the referee missed, but I'm not going to blame the loss entirely on the referee's performance. 'We didn't help ourselves.' The loss drops the Titans to 4-13 on the season and keeps them glued to the bottom of the ladder. Originally published as Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler blows up at players in the shower

Des Hasler won't quit the Gold Coast Titans
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Defiant Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler says he's not walking away dismissing reports he's heading towards retirement with his battling team set to win the NRL wooden spoon. reports last week suggested the premiership winner was set to end what has been a horror tenure at the Titans despite being contracted until 2026. The Titans are last on the ladder with just four wins from 16 games having won just eight games in 2024. But after going down 26-14 to the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday night, Hasler addressed his future and made it clear that the 'great signs' at the club were enough for him to stay out. Hasler said he was only getting started in his second season in charge and wanted to coach the team in 2026. 'Of course, yep,' he said. 'I don't take any notice of reports because I know what we've got here and I know what's been said, so the speculation is unfounded. 'We have only been at it 18 months. I'm not trying to make excuses, I'm one of the most competitive people that you could come across, and it's not something I am enjoying, particularly when I know what's in the four walls. Des Hasler says he isn't quitting the Titans. Picture: NRL Photos 'I think if you're going to be fair, if you're not looking at it in a biased way or you don't have an agenda, there are some great signs there tonight.' The Titans have only played finals once in the past nine years. but Hasler was adamant the future of the club was 'strong'. 'What you saw tonight was the effort and the willingness to work hard,' he said. 'If we can just execute better, and limit some of the mistakes... it is a very competitive side, so the future of the Titans, I think, is quite strong.' Hasler had the backing of Gold Coast captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui who has been linked to a potential move away from the NRL battlers in pursuit of some success. 'For sure, I think every week, no matter what the situation is, you go out and play for your coach,' he said on Sunday. 'Nothing changes for me, same mentality every week.' 'What you saw tonight was the effort and the willingness to work hard,' he said. 'If we can just execute better, and limit some of the mistakes... it is a very competitive side, so the future of the Titans, I think, is quite strong.' The Titans next play last year's wooden spooners the Tigers next Sunday and a win could keep their mathematical chances of playing finals alive. Hasler responds to speculation about his future
Gold Coast coach Des Hasler has hit back at talk that his coaching days at the Titans are numbered. The Titans are in last place on the NRL ladder after finishing 14th last year, with two-time premiership winner Hasler not enjoying the success he was hired to achieve after previous coach Justin Holbrook was axed in 2023. There have been reports about Hasler's future in recent days, with one suggesting he would retire at season's end and depart the Titans even if the club decides not to fire him. Asked about the speculation, the coach was quick to respond. "I can probably knock that on the head straight away," Hasler said. "It's unfounded. It's all unfounded and it is all speculation and that's all I can really comment on." The veteran mentor was then asked whether he expected to be on deck for the final season of his three-year deal in 2026. "I'm contracted for that. Let's move on. Next question," he said the speculation about him had not been a distraction ahead of the home derby clash with Brisbane on Sunday afternoon, as he was quizzed about why his coaching tenure at the club wasn't working out."I wouldn't say it's not working," he said. "Obviously the results haven't shown that, but everybody at the club is working really hard and that's the part you don't see." Meanwhile, the Broncos will rest NSW prop Payne Haas from the clash as they target a fifth consecutive win. Haas has been managing a lower back complaint all season and coach Michael Maguire has taken the opportunity to rest him. Rookie prop Ben Talty will get his second NRL game in a row and is set to slot on to the bench. "Payne won't play. It's more a case of looking after him really," Maguire said. "He has had a fair bit going over the last month with his back, so we feel it's the right thing to do at the moment. "Ben performed really well last week. I like to pick on performances, so he will come in and do a good job again. "Payne will be back in next game. We are going into the bye, so I felt that timing was good for us to allow him to have a rest, and the boys know they have to step up and do what we did last week." The Broncos staged a thrilling 22-18 comeback win over Canterbury last week without their State of Origin players, but Reece Walsh, Gehamat Shibasaki and Pat Carrigan all return. Veteran Ben Hunt also returns from a nine-week absence with a hamstring injury and slots in at hooker. "Everyone knows his experience, 300 games and what he brings. He is a competitor, but it's the little effort areas I look at with Hunty," Maguire said. "You look at him in big games, he leads kick chase, he does the kick pressure and the little things that people don't get applauded for. He will be a great addition for us." Former Warriors Kieran Foran makes call to retire after 16 years
Kieran Foran will close the curtain on one of rugby league's most-storied careers after confirming his plans to retire at the end of 2025. One of rugby league's great survivors, Foran is set to finish with close to 315 NRL games to his name when he plays his final match for Gold Coast in September. Foran's retirement comes as questions swirl around the future of coach Des Hasler at the club, with the Titans sitting last and looking unlikely to make finals. A premiership-winner at Manly in 2011, Foran also played 31 Tests for New Zealand and is the last player in the NRL to have debuted during the 2000s decade. But beyond all that, Foran will finish as one of the toughest halves to play the game in the NRL era, after a career that experienced more highs and lows than most. ADVERTISEMENT The Kiwi, who turns 35 on Sunday, debuted under Hasler at Manly in 2009 as a hard-running five-eighth, regularly putting his body through the ringer when taking the line on or putting on hits in defence. He won a premiership as a 21-year-old, partnering with Daly Cherry-Evans as one of the youngest combinations in the game's history to take a team to the title. But when the five-eighth was lured to Parramatta in 2016 on a mega four-year deal, the playmaker's path changed significantly. He experienced highly publicised personal issues and has since revealed the mental demons he fought through that period. Foran ended up leaving the Eels for the Warriors after one season, but admitted then it was the toll he put on his body that began to catch up with him. He played just 57 games across four seasons at the Warriors and then Canterbury, at one stage prompting fears of a medical retirement due to a shoulder injury. Foran persisted though, earned a lifeline under Hasler at Manly in 2021 before helping take them back to preliminary final in his first season back at Brookvale. ADVERTISEMENT The No.6 was eventually squeezed out at the end of 2022, but had done enough to extend his career on the Gold Coast. It was there Hasler ultimately joined him in 2024, after making a shock return to coaching at the Titans. Foran reached the 300-game milestone last year, perhaps the most unlikely member of the 55-man group given the fact his career looked over six years ago. "That's something I am so grateful for and proud of," Foran told AAP on reaching the milestone last year. "It's just staying in the fight. If this could be an example or message to anyone out there, it's that good things can come if you stay in the fight. "I'd got to 26 or 27 or 28 and my body just fell apart. Just through sheer wear and tear and not looking after it the way I should have in the early stages of my career. "I would say to the missus: 'Is it worth me keeping going if I'm not playing the footy I want to play? Is my body going to get back to where I need it to?'"
