Some protesters, reportedly armed, broke windows and doors before security forces dispersed them. Others set fires and temporarily blocked the main Erbil-Kirkuk highway as demonstrations escalated throughout the day. The newly appointed municipality director is a Kurdish woman from the city. The demonstrators demand that one of three key positions in the town - municipality director, subdistrict administrator, or police chief - be assigned to a Turkmen representative. Protesters told Rudaw they would continue demonstrations until one of these posts is granted. In addition to Turkmen Front supporters, Turkmen members of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi) and cadres from the Badr Organization joined the protest, according to Rudaw's reporter. Among them was Ahmad Ramzi, a member of Kirkuk's provincial council representing the Turkmen Front. The Turkmen Front has reportedly been divided over how to respond to recent administrative appointments in disputed areas, with a rift between its former head Hassan Turan - who resigned in April - and Arshad al-Salihi, the current head in the Iraqi parliament and Turan's predecessor before 2021. The party is particularly active in politics in the disputed city of Kirkuk, repeatedly claiming that the city belongs to the Turkmen people. Hiwa Hussamadin contributed to this report.

Iraqi Turkmen parties unite for November 2025 elections
Shafaq News/ On Friday, the leadership of the Unified Iraqi Turkmen Front convened to discuss preparations for Iraq's parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 11, 2025. According to a statement, the meeting was chaired by Front President Mohammad Samaan Agha and brought together leaders of the Turkmen parties under its umbrella. Discussions focused on strengthening the Turkmen community's role in the political process as well as securing fair and effective representation in the next phase. Participants also emphasized the need for unity and coordinated positions among Turkmen political forces. The group agreed to retain the name "Unified Iraqi Turkmen Front" as the main platform representing the Turkmen voice in national politics. Mohammad Samaan Agha was reaffirmed as the head of the list. Mohammad Samaan Agha was elected president of the Turkmen Front on April 13, 2025, following the resignation of Hassan Turan, who had taken over the role on March 28, 2021, after Arshad Salihi stepped down to focus on political negotiations on behalf of the Turkmen community.

The Iraqi legislature convened on Monday with the attendance of 178 lawmakers and passed a bill to make Halabja the fourth province of Kurdistan Region and the country's 19th. The vote came after months of delay. In December 2013, the Iraqi Council of Ministers approved a proposal to make Halabja the country's 19th province, separating it from Sulaimani province. However, political tensions between Erbil and Baghdad, as well as disputes among Sunni and Shiite lawmakers, have delayed the bill's passage for over a decade. The Kurdistan Region's Council of Ministers declared Halabja a province in 2014, making it the Region's fourth. Four years later, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior formally recognized Halabja's provincial status, but the Iraqi parliament was yet to ratify the decision. Halabja stands out as a symbol of Kurdish suffering and resilience. On March 16, 1988, near the end of the eight-year Iran-Iraq War, the forces of toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein attacked Halabja with chemical weapons. The attack killed at least 5,000 people - mostly women and children - and injured thousands more. The Halabja chemical attack was part of the Baath regime's broader Anfal campaign in which more than 182,000 Kurds were killed. It remains as one of the darkest chapters in modern Iraqi history. Iraqi strike kills suspected ISIS members in Salahaddin
Also in Iraq Numerous Anfal victims believed to be buried in Kirkuk cemetery Graves of Anfal victims discovered in Kirkuk cemetery: Activists Hassan Turan resigns as Iraqi Turkmen Front leader Kurdish Peshmerga destroy suspected ISIS hideouts in Diyala A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Several suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members were killed in an Iraqi airstrike on their hideout in rural Salahaddin province, the army said on Sunday, as Baghdad continues to clamp down on jihadist remnants. Iraq's air force 'carried out an airstrike using F-16 fighter jets targeting the two hideouts, killing the ISIS terrorist gang members inside, and destroying equipment, logistical materials, and communication devices,' the army's Security Media Cell said in a statement. The statement did not disclose the exact number of casualties. Iraq carries out frequent airstrikes on suspected ISIS hideouts to pursue remnants of the group, particularly within areas of Diyala, Salahaddin, Kirkuk, and Nineveh provinces that are disputed between Erbil and Baghdad and a security vacuum exists, as well as in the Anbar desert that borders Syria. Iraqi forces and the Kurdish Peshmerga are coordinating to combat the group in the disputed areas. Another Iraqi airstrike in mid-March in the Anbar desert killed Abdullah Makki Muslih al-Rafiei, ISIS's second-in-command globally and its top man in Iraq and Syria. In late February, the head of Iraq's Security Media Cell told Rudaw that Iraqi security forces have largely eradicated ISIS from the country, with only a few hundred militants remaining in remote areas. The group was declared territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017, three years after it seized control of swathes of territory in the north and centre of the country.

Iraq's ITF: Mehmet Seman Ağaoğlu appointed new leader
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraq's Turkmen Front (ITF) elected Mehmet Seman Ağaoğlu as its new leader, succeeding the resigned Hassan Turan. Just hours before Ağaoğlu's appointment, Turan officially submitted his resignation from the leadership, without providing any reasons. Mehmet Seman Ağaoğlu is a prominent Iraqi Turkmen politician and the official spokesperson for the Turkmen Front, a political party representing the Turkmen minority in Iraq.
