Gosford preview: Trainer Kylie Gavenlock anticipates a strong performance from Renoir in his mile test

Trainer Kylie Gavenlock has been quite happy with Renoir in his two runs back from a spell and feels the gelding can run a bold race when he gets his first opportunity over a suitable distance. The four-year-old was spelled after one run in September of 2023 and returned from his long break with a fifth behind Donwon over 1000m at Gosford on May 29. Renoir followed up with a fifth to Caelus over 1300m at Hawkesbury where he was doing his best work through the line. The four-year-old's pedigree also suggests he will be much better suited to the mile and further being a son of Dundeel from a granddaughter of Adrian Knox Stakes winner, Starry Way. It's a first up win for Photograph! ðŸ'· @ZacLloydx and @JamesCummings88 combine to take out the first at @sconeraceclub! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 2, 2024 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'He was only just getting wound up the last little bit the other day but he was very good after the post,' said Gavenlock. 'I was quite happy with his first-up run too. The distance was too short but I don't think the heavy track suited him. 'While he got through it okay, he will appreciate the bit better going this week. 'Now that we have got him up to the mile, I think that should suit him a lot more.' Gavenlock feels Renoir is ready to run much better than a $31 chance in the Eagles Plumbing Plus Super Maiden Plate (1600m). 'This doesn't look the strongest Super Maiden and I wouldn't have thought he would the price that he is. He is worth a couple of bucks each-way,' she said. Gavenlock's other two runners are both first-up but she feels they can run well. Alfred will resumes in the Bateau Bay Bowling Club Maiden Plate (1100m). While unplaced in his seven runs to date, Alfred has finished fourth and fifth in five of them. 'He's probably a little unlucky not to have had a couple of placings,' Gavenlock said. 'He is a horse that is not mature yet. He is a really leggy horse and I feel next time in, he will be a better deal.' The son of Saxon Warrior will need a little luck after drawing the outside barrier. 'It's a sticky gate for him. I would have liked he draw in a bit rather than (barrier) eight of eight. It is what it is. Thebes and @AnnaRoper_ race away with the third at Taree! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 7, 2025 'If he begins really well, he could get stuck out there but Josh (Parr) is no mug so hopefully he can make up for that draw. 'He will come out and find his feet and hopefully be flying home.' Gavenlock had a difficult decision to make with Thebes when she accepted for two races which he had mixed fortune with the barrier draw. In the Class 1 (1200m), he drew the outside in barrier 11 while in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1100m) he came up with gate 2. 'It's a shame he didn't draw better in the Class 1 because this (Benchmark 64) is quite a strong race,' she said. 'Just being first-up, I wanted him to get a nice, soft run. I didn't want to take the chance of him being caught wide. 'I'd rather him flying home to run second not dropping out of it because he overraced early.' The son of American Pharoah has shown nice ability on his short career. He finished third behind Bartolf at Scone at just his second start last July while broke his maiden in nice style at Taree back on January 7. 'I like him a lot and when he gets up to 1400 metres and mile this time in, I think he will be a very nice horse,' she said. â– â– â– â– â– Ghaznavi may still be a maiden after 17 starts but trainer Cameron Crockett's faith in the gelding still remain strong. The four-year-old joined Crockett's Scone stable earlier this year and has placed in three of his five starts went within a nose of breaking through when a nose second behind Saint Philomena over 1400m at Mudgee last start. 'We are still figuring the horse out. He's been a hard to work out,' said Crockett. 'It doesn't normally take this long because he's got ability. 'He's a 17 start maiden but he's a got a lot more ability than that. 'It wouldn't shock me that once we get a good handle on him, he really puts a few wins together.' After settling back and wide from barrier eight of 11, Ghaznavi made a sustained run around the field and came down the outside fence to just miss. 🟣 Bhima Grad Winner 🟣 3YO Spandex (Pariah x Le Clercq) scores his maiden win for @saspery1 under @Aaronbullock90 at Tamworth. Bred and raised at Bhima, he was a graduate of our @mmsnippets GC Yearling Sale draft. Well done! â€' Bhima Thoroughbreds (@BhimaTBreds) June 27, 2025 'He was very unlucky. He was just stuck a bit deep from the draw and Will (Stanley) couldn't do anything about it,' he said. 'We were always planning on making an early run. It's just a shame he hadn't drawn a bit low and settled a bit closer because I think he would have won.' The son of Invader looks well placed to go one better when he steps out in the Maas Mile Maiden Handicap (1600m) with Mathew Cahill aboard. 'Now that he is up to a mile and the races are run at a steadier tempo, I think he can settle a bit closer which will help,' he said.' Crockett has liked what he has seen from recent stable addition Durova who makes her debut for the stable in the Toohey's New Benchmark 74 Handicap (1000m). The three-year-old daughter of Russian Revolution was previously trained by Ciaron Maher and won first-up last September while her last run was a handy fourth to First Mission at Canterbury on April 30. 'I bought her online a few weeks ago. She went through for $55,000 but failed the scope so they sent her back,' Crockett explained. 'My being an opportunist, when she went back online, I bought her for $13,000. 'Ash Morgan rode her at her at Canterbury and he said she was very unlucky not to have won after racing on the fence which was off that day. 'The 1000 metres might be a touch short for her but if she isn't winning, she will be the run of the race.'

Canterbury preview: Peter Snowden's faith has been rewarded as a more mature Cassiel shines ahead of midweek target

Trainer Peter Snowden has always known the ability was there and while it has taken time for Cassiel to show it on race day, the gelding has delivered it in spades this preparation. Cassiel placed in three of his four runs last campaign but was his own worst enemy, according to Snowden. With maturity, the four-year-old has been much better this time in, leading all the way to score by more than a length from Apex when resuming at Canterbury on April 21 and backing it up with a two-and-a-half length win from Fly Scotty Fly at Hawkesbury four weeks later in a Benchmark 64 over 1100m with 61kg. 'He just wanted to go too hard and too quick in his races,' Snowden said. 'He is racing a lot more tractably and it is showing in his performances on race day. 'He's probably one of the best trackworkers I've ever had but come race day he just wanted to overdo it and [was] beating himself. 'Now, he is starting to learn to relax a lot better. 'He's not perfect but because he's relaxing more, he's able to find more at the end of his races. 'He will win a lot more races yet if he keeps going the way he is going.' Cassiel races away to salute in the last at Hawkesbury for the @SnowdenRacing1 stable! 🙌 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 17, 2025 Cassiel steps out at Canterbury on Wednesday in the Hyland Race Colours Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m) with Tom Sherry again aboard. 'He's definitely going the right way and you can't beat winning form,' Snowden said. 'It's a similar race for him this week and he looks well placed in that grade.' Lightly-raced three-year-old Braveheart is another who possess nice ability and is getting better with time and maturity. 'He is a full brother to King Of Sparta and there's no reason he can't be up to that grade at some stage,' he said. 'He is very lightly raced – he's only had a handful of starts – but every start he has had, he has shown something. 'He had a few little issues in the early days but we have ironed them out now and he is going very well. 'The family keeps getting better as they get older, there's no doubt about that, and I expect him to do the same. The son of I Am Invincible caught there eye with his strong closing third behind Axius on the Kensington first-up and is a leading chance in the Broadsiding @ Darley Handicap (1250m). Axius is too good for them at Randwick, as he wins first up for @NockBraith and @cmaherracing! 🙌 @aus_turf_club @Dynamic_WONIT — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 25, 2025 • 'He has found the right race this week. His first-up run was very good and a similar sort of race this week should see him run very well again,' he said. 'He worked well on Saturday morning and is ready to go.' Snowden is keeping his options open as to whether Infusion makes her race debut at Canterbury in the TAB Handicap (1200m), goes to Gosford on Thursday or waits until next week. 'I just want to get her on the best track I can,' he said. 'She is more effective on good ground than soft so we will see what happens with the weather.' The three-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible has been good in her barrier trials including a nose second to proven performer Highlights after tracking him in the run in her latest heat at Canterbury on June 23. 'She is a nice filly; a big strong thing,' he said 'She had a few growing pains early and it has taken us a while to get her to the track. 'She has been trialling soundly and it was a very good trial at Canterbury at her last one against good company. She was very strong to the line.'

The Awesome story behind the namesake of Blake Ryan's talented two-year-old

Hawkesbury trainer Blake Ryan will be at Rosehill on Saturday armed with his exciting two-year-old debut winner Just Awesome. The gelding's name will be instantly recognisable for racing fans and breeding scholars in particular. Enter the Magic Millions Sales Director David Chester who had a front-row seat for the original Just Awesome 's brief but spectacular career. 'I remember the late Ken Turner trained him and he was a pretty smart racehorse,'' Chester told Racenet. For the record, the son of Last Tycoon was foaled in 1990 and was a member of the same crop sired by the Breeders' Cup Mile winner as Mahogany, Lady Jakeo, Tracey's Element and Magic Of Money. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Just Awesome, unlike the modern-day version, was beaten on debut but hardly disgraced given it was behind Geoff and Beryl White's future Galaxy winner, Jetball. As for Just Awesome, his stakes-win came at Rosehill on August 27 in 1994 when Shane Dye steered the colt to a narrow victory in the Concorde Stakes. His race record and pedigree was enough to earn Just Awesome a place on the then revered stallion roster at Wakefield Stud which at the time, included Kala Dancer, who would go on to throw Melbourne Cup winner Subzero and the ill-fated Angst. 'The late Brian Agnew bought the horse as a stallion prospect to stand in the Hunter Valley,'' Chester explained. 'And he (Just Awesome) was at a farm at Beaudesert, I can't remember the name of it, but anyway it was 'gelding day' and I think they had about half a dozen horses to geld and they brought down Just Awesome. 'They never checked the brand. Anyway the vet took out one testicle and then he said 'are you sure this is the right horse?' 'And then all hell broke loose. They checked the brand and found out they'd taken a testicle out of Just Awesome.' • Kosciuszko build-up begins without defending champ Needless to say it was a big deal at the time, with the career of one of the nation's boom soon-to-be stallions almost over before it began. 'Brian rang me and he said 'David, can you help me sell the horse, I don't want him now','' Chester said. 'So I rang Fred Brown who had a property at Southbrook. 'He was quite a big client of (the Magic Millions), as a breeder and racehorse owner. John Size used to train for him when he trained in Brisbane; Fred was one of John's best clients. 'So I rang Fred and Fred said 'I like the horse, but Jesus David, let me talk to Reg Pascoe' who was the leading horse vet on the Darling Downs. 'Reg said 'Fred, first year you might have to just go a little bit easy on him but that testicle will develop and he will be able to cover as many mares as you want, it should not affect him at all later on.' Which is exactly what Brown did. Just Awesome covered a mere 56 mares in his first season in 1996. That number rose to 68 in the following season but then tragedy struck. Just Awesome died in April, 1998, leaving behind an eventful and ultimately unfulfilled career that only became evident as his limited number of offspring made it to the racetrack. 'He was a very good stallion,'' Chester said. 'He was sensational in what he did in the first couple of seasons. 'You couldn't believe it. Just everything he got could run.' According to figures supplied by Racing And Sports, Just Awesome's two (small) crops delivered winners of 318 races including five stakes-winners, led by Sound The Alarm who won the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year's Day in 2002. Vale Just Awesome (1990-1998), gone but not forgotten.
