Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. activated off IL, set to start against Cubs

HOUSTON (AP) — Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. is set to start for the Houston Astros on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs after the team activated him from the 15-day injured list. McCullers was placed on the injured list June 13. After missing two full seasons because of a right flexor tendon surgery, McCullers is 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in seven starts this season, but he compiled a 3.20 ERA in his last five starts with 35 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings. McCullers' return is welcome news for an Astros rotation that has lost Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco for the rest of the season because of surgery and has been without Spencer Arrighetti since April after he suffered a broken right thumb during a batting practice accident. Houston is also without right-handers Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier, who are still recovering from Tommy John surgery. Despite being short-handed, the Astros entered Saturday with a 6 1/2-game lead in the American League West. Their 3.41 team ERA is tied for fourth best in the majors. The Astros optioned right-hander Nick Hernandez to make room on the roster for McCullers. ___ AP MLB:

Astros right-hander Ronel Blanco is set for season-ending Tommy John surgery

Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] HOUSTON (AP) — Houston right-hander Ronel Blanco will have season-ending Tommy John surgery next week. The team made the announcement Wednesday after Blanco got a second opinion. He was placed on the injured list last week with inflammation in his throwing elbow, a few days after his last start on May 17. 'I know how hard he's worked to get to this point and it stinks,' manager Joe Espada said. 'So the goal is now to get him healthy, get him back at some point next season.' Blanco is the second Astros starter this month to have to undergo Tommy John surgery after they announced on May 18 that right-hander Hayden Wesneski would need it. Espada said it's a trying time for his team, which also is without right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, who has been out since April after breaking his right thumb in a batting practice mishap. They also are missing right-handers Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier, who are both still recovering from Tommy John surgery. 'It's very, very hard,' Espada said. 'We went through it last year. But as a team and as a leader of this team, I got to keep these guys focused on the goal ... and this news means we gotta pick each other up and we've gotta find someone else. Somebody will come up and step up and pick these innings up.' The 31-year-old Blanco was 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA in nine starts this season. ___ AP MLB:

Astros RHP Ronel Blanco to undergo elbow surgery, miss much of '26

May 28 - Houston Astros starting pitcher Ronel Blanco will have season-ending surgery on his right elbow next week. The team announced the news Wednesday, the latest blow for the Houston pitching staff. Right-hander Hayden Wesneski underwent Tommy John surgery last week. Blanco will be out the rest of this season and is expected to miss much of 2026. The 31-year-old right-hander threw six innings in his most recent start, a 5-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on May 17. He gave up three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Last week, Blanco informed the Astros that he had a sore elbow and an MRI showed inflammation, the Houston Chronicle reported. He went on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 20, and the Astros recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land. Blanco is in his fourth major league season, all with the Astros. In 2024, he finished 13-6 with a 2.80 ERA in 30 games (29 starts). He threw his only career complete game in his season debut on April 1, no-hitting the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-0 win. This season, he is 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA in nine starts. He has struck out 48 batters in 48 1/3 innings and made four quality starts. --Field Level Media

Astros RHP Hayden Wesneski will undergo Tommy John surgery

May 19 - Houston Astros manager Joe Espada announced on Sunday that right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2025 season. The first-year Astro started at Milwaukee on May 6 and suffered the loss in a 4-3 setback. He allowed all four Brewer runs in four innings. Three days later, he was placed on the injured list with elbow inflammation. Espada expects Wesneski to return during the 2026 season. The Chicago Cubs sent Wesneski, a Houston native, along with Cam Smith to the Astros in exchange for All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker last December. In 2022, the hurler was the Yankees' seventh-ranked prospect, but New York dealt him to Chicago at the trade deadline for reliever Scott Effross. Wesneski went back and forth between the starting rotation and the bullpen in three seasons with the Cubs, making 68 appearances overall (22 starts). All six of his 2025 appearances for the Astros were as a starter and he posted a 1-3 record with a 4.50 ERA, but a tidy 1.09 WHIP. Wesneski owns a career ERA of 4.01 in 222 innings of work. The Astros have suffered multiple injuries to their staff as Spencer Arrighetti, Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier and JP France are currently unavailable. To replace Wesneski, Houston called up prospect Colton Gordon, who started against Kansas City on Wednesday in his MLB debut. Wesneski was selected by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 2019 draft. --Field Level Media

ARLINGTON, Texas — Houston Astros right-hander Hayden Wesneski is set to undergo Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, likely sidelining him until late in the 2026 season. Wesneski went on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort on May 9, three days after allowing four runs over four innings in a 4-3 loss at Milwaukee. The 27-year-old was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA.
