Tottenham's Hayley Raso in talks over Benfica transfer
Tottenham Hotspur winger Hayley Raso is in talks over a move to Portuguese club Benfica. The 30-year-old Australia international is into the final year of her deal at Spurs and while an agreement is yet to be reached, talks between the clubs are ongoing. Raso joined Tottenham last summer on a two-year contract last summer from Real Madrid and scored on her debut, a four-goal victory over Crystal Palace in the Women's Super League (WSL). Advertisement However, Raso did not score in her 12 subsequent appearances for the club. Raso, who has 99 senior appearances for Australia, previously played for Canberra United and the Brisbane Roar in the W-League, NWSL duo Washington Spirit and the Portland Thorns, before spells in Europe with Everton, Manchester City and Madrid. New Spurs coach Martin Ho, who was appointed at the north London club earlier this month, now wants to reshape the squad and the potential exit of Raso would precede incomings ahead of the new WSL season. Spurs have made one signing this summer, with 19-year-old Japan defender Toko Koga joining from Feyenoord in July on a four-year deal. Spurs endured a difficult 2024-25 campaign under previous head coach Robert Vilahamn, including a 10-game winless run from January which saw them record an 11th-place WSL finish, just one place from the foot of the table and relegation. Football 2025: Australia's Matildas def Panama 3-2 in second friendly match, score, stats, result, goal scorers, video, highlights, latest news
Don't miss out on the headlines from Football. Followed categories will be added to My News. Australia's Matildas have avoided a second disastrous defeat to lowly Panama, with a stoppage-time winner from Charli Grant giving the hosts a 3-2 win. The central American side, ranked 56th in the world, stunned the World Cup semi-finalists last weekend in Bunbury and were threatening to repeat the feat on Tuesday evening at HBF Park. That was until two goals from veteran forward Michelle Heyman, both assisted by the excellent Hayley Raso, gave the hosts the lead in more promising signs under new coach Joe Montemurro. A clean finish in the 84th minute from Lineth Cedeno saw the Matildas facing the prospect of just one win from their four games in the west against Panama and Slovenia over the last fortnight. But Grant tapped in the winner early in added time to hand Montemurro and his side a confidence boost heading towards a home Asian Cup, to be held next March. The Matildas were without some 19 first-choice players including the likes of Teagan Micah, Mackenzie Arnold, Alanna Kennedy, Ellie Carpenter, Steph Catley, Clare Wheeler, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Katrina Gorry, Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler and Sam Kerr. Absences and injuries forced eight changes from the side that lost 1-0 on Saturday with Chloe Lincoln making her starting debut as goalkeeper with returns for Charli Grant and Amy Sayer. After 34 minutes, a costly turnover from Jessika Nash gave Panama's Ericka Aruaz the chance to send a brilliant strike past Chloe Lincoln for the 1-0 lead. But in the 55th minute Heyman levelled the scores, tapping in her 32nd career goal for the national side off a Raso assist. With the Matildas in the ascendancy it wasn't long until Heyman added her 33rd, again combining with Raso to head home a second goal. Matildas exact revenge on Panama following shock defeat
A Charli Grant goal in the 91st minute has helped the Matildas avoid a second-straight defeat to lowly-ranked opponent Panama. In what was a back and forth affair at HBF Park in Perth, the Matildas struck late to secure a 3-2 win. The victory comes just days after they suffered a shock 1-0 loss at the hands of their 56th ranked rivals. It appeared they may be set to suffer the same fate following a lacklustre first half that saw them head into the break down 1-0. Ericka Arauz capitalised on some sloppy defensive work with Jessika Nash turning the ball over after an errant pass. Arauz wasted no time as she sent a shot from well outside the box into the back of the net in the 34th minute. The Matildas however emerged a different outfit in the second half with Hayley Raso continually tearing Panama defenders to shreds. Raso was at her damaging best and played a major role in the Matildas' opening two goals. A pinpoint cross from Raso in the 54th minute found a wide open Michelle Heyman who calmly slotted the ball into the net from close range to equalise. Eleven minutes later they did it again with a near identical play. This time Raso's cross found Heyman in the middle of the box with the veteran sending a header past the outstretched hand of the keeper. Despite appearing on track for victory, Panama refused to lay down with Lineth Cedeno pouncing and levelling things up at 2-2 after a brilliant passage of play in the 83rd minute. From their the Matildas went all out attack mode and it was Grant who emerged at the back post following a cross from Courtney Nevin. The ball carried all the way over a crowded box with Grant ushering the ball into the net and handing the Matildas the 3-2 advantage which they never squandered. 'Nev put an excellent ball in and I was just glad I could get on the end of it and get the win for us,' Grant said after the match. 'Scoring a goal for your country, you can't top that.' The victory means the two-game series between the two nations ends at one-win each with the Matildas now turning their attention to their AFF Women's Championship clash against Myanmar on August 7.

Australia v Panama: international women's football friendly
Update: Date: 2025-07-05T05:46:27.000Z Title: Preamble Content: Hello and welcome to live coverage of the first women's football friendly between Australia and Panama at Hands Oval in Bunbury, Western Australia. The Matildas make their debut at the venue as they seek to build on a reasonably positive start to coach Joe Montemurro's tenure after a first-up victory over Slovenia was followed by a draw when the visitors hit a last-gasp equaliser. As often seems to be the way with the beautiful game, Australia's better performance of the two was widely considered to be in the game that they drew. Montemurro will get a deeper look at his squad and options for the Women's Asian Cup on home soil next year with several star names out of action and enjoying a rest elsewhere today. But Hayley Raso is in town and will wear the captain's armband against the side ranked No 56 in the world. Panama bring their own strong form into the friendly after a 5-1 win over Bolivia a month ago and a 2-0 victory against the same side a week before that. Kick-off is at 2.30pm AWST / 4.30pm AEST. I'll be back soon with the line-ups and team news. In the meantime, get in touch with any questions, thoughts and predictions. Matildas coach responds after worrying scenes despite win without Kerr and Fowler
The Matildas have started life under Joe Montemurro with a 3-0 win over Slovenia with Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler both out with ACL injuries, but the coach was left frustrated with a few mistakes as he tries to implement his style. Hayley Raso returned for the Matildas and was the star of the show having scored a cracking third goal in the victory in Perth on Thursday. But adapting to Montemurro's new style of play has proven to be a challenge for the team. Montemurro often deploys a more possession-based game plan than what some of the Matildas players are accustomed to during their time in the national jersey. And it showed with the players giving the ball away time and time again. This allowed Slovenia to record a massive 30 shots on target across the contest. Despite struggling in possession and making errors, the class of the Matildas was on display having made the crucial plays when it mattered. While life under Montemurro started with a victory, the former Lyon coach was left unimpressed with certain areas of their performance. "It was an entertaining game. It could have been 6-5 or 7-6 or something," Montemurro said. "But for me, it was a very important test, because a team that will play player-on-player in that manner, we have to learn to be better under these circumstances, because a lot of teams will do this now in modern football When you want to play a game where you're breaking lines and preparing to break lines and you're playing under pressure, you are going to make mistakes." Although Montemurro admitted the players need to learn to suffer with and without the ball to return to the top level again with the Matildas dropping to their equal-lowest ranking in years. "You are going to make errors, and I'm demanding this, because for us to be at the top level, we have to be comfortable doing this. We made three or four big errors in that. But I'm not concerned, because it's the process going forward," he added. "For me, it was the perfect game against a team that's obviously pressured all over the pitch. We have to be comfortable under that pressure." Fortunately for Montemurro, the 3-0 win came with a host of superstars missing from the side. Alongside Kerr and Fowler, the Matildas were missing stars Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Katrina Gorry, Cortnee Vine and Clare Wheeler. Many are taking an extended rest after a long European season. Just as Montemurro was announced as the new coach of the Matildas, Kerr suffered a fresh injury. Kerr has not played football in more than 16 months after tearing her ACL during training for her club side Chelsea. And earlier this month, it was revealed Kerr underwent surgery on a separate injury. Little is known about her recovery timeline, with Kerr and partner Kristie Mews recently taking a break and holidaying in the off-season. However, the Matildas superstar handed fans an update having posted footage of her back training and running with the ball during a Chelsea session. Although she was once again excluded from the Matildas squad with fans increasingly interested over when she will make a comeback. The Matildas superstar has been undergoing her recovery and was a hope to line-up for Chelsea, before their record breaking Women's Super League season came to an end. Although this didn't come to fruition with the plan for Kerr to remain in England and continue her recovery with Chelsea. Fowler remains out having also suffered an ACL injury towards the end of Manchester City's season. The Matildas star has been undergoing recovery with her club side having been told she can't travel after surgery. This meant she wasn't able to return home to watch partner Nathan Cleary in State of Origin.
