Family grieves 5-year-old boy who fell to death from apartment tower

The father of a boy who fell to his death from an Edmonton high-rise last week is asking for privacy as he and his family grieves. The five-year-old fell from The Pinnacle on Wednesday, Edmonton police said on Saturday. The father told CTV News Edmonton he and his family are getting support from relatives, friends and strangers. He and the family are accepting condolences via the non-profit Ethiopian Canadians Community Association in Edmonton. Police said he fell from the roof of the tower located on 121 Street north of Jasper Avenue. A tenant told CTV News Edmonton on Monday the child fell from a balcony and that his family lives on the 21st floor of the 26-storey tower that was built in 1972. Hazelview Properties, the property management firm that manages The Pinnacle, said in a statement that balconies on the high-rise are structurally sound and 'meet the safety requirements set out in the building code.' Police continue to investigate after a child died in a fall from an Edmonton apartment building last week. In a statement Monday, Edmonton police said they continue to investigate the death of a five-year-old boy who fell to his death in the area of 121st Street and 101st Avenue on July 2. Police said the child fell from the rooftop of an apartment building in the area, but declined to provide further details on the child's death or the status of the investigation. Property management company Hazelview Properties confirmed the building was its high-rise apartment building, The Pinnacle. Company officials described the boy's death as a heartbreaking tragedy. They have offered free counselling services to the family and residents of the building. "We are heartbroken to confirm that a tragic incident occurred at The Pinnacle, where a young child fell from an upper floor and sadly lost his life," Atiya Khan, director of marketing and communications for Hazelview Properties, said in a statement. "Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to the child's family and loved ones during this unimaginable time." Company officials said they have been co-operating with authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the child's death. The company said it would not be providing additional details on the incident out of respect for the family's privacy and the ongoing investigation. "At this stage, we have no indication to believe that the incident was caused by any structural issue or defect with the building. All balconies at the property meet the safety requirements set out in the building code," Khan wrote. Company officials said the boy's death has been felt widely among residents. "This is an incredibly difficult moment for the entire community."

Members of the Ethiopian community have come together to help the family of a five-year-old boy who tragically died after falling from an apartment building on Wednesday, according to police. Article content Mourners gathered at the Ethiopian Canadians Community Association building on Sunday afternoon to support the family of Keyeron Nure, 5. Article content Article content 'It's very hard to explain the pain we're all feeling,' said Tesfaye Hunde, the boy's uncle, said in an interview with Postmedia. Article content Article content 'The support… it means a lot. We have got a lot of emotional support, and they feel our pain. People are coming and expressing their grief.' Article content Article content 'He just told me 'I need your help. The police are here, and I don't know what's going on, but I can't see him' (his son),' said Hunde. Article content 'As soon as I got there, I knew something was badly wrong. I could see it in the eyes of the police.' Hunde said his nephew was autistic, but described him as a child who was always full of energy and he loved to smile. Article content Recently, he said his nephew started to repeat a lot of words that family members would say, and he was starting to speak more, which Hunde said made both of his parents so happy. Article content 'Just four days before he died, he started to call him Baba (term for father in Ethiopian) for the first time, and his dad was so proud. He sent me a video of it to tell me,' said Hunde. Article content Article content 'Now, his father just wants to keep watching that video.' Article content Article content Hunde said he doesn't know all the details of the incident, but police are still investigating what caused the tragedy. Article content Postmedia reached out to representatives of Hazelview Properties, the owners of the Pinnacle apartment and they've offered mental health support to the family and all residents of the building, who've been impacted by the incident. Article content 'The community has been deeply impacted by such a tragedy. We have reached out the immediate family and offered our condolences and support, and let them know we're here for them in any way that we can.' Article content Hunde has taken in his brother and sister-in-law as well as their four-year-old and two-year-old son into his home to take care of them, while they grieve the loss of their son and brother.
