Predicting Mets' next big trade before deadline
The post Predicting Mets' next big trade before deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets came into the season with incredibly high expectations. Juan Soto signed the largest contract in North American sports history, coming to a team that just made the NLCS. They started out hot, 45-24 record through June 12. But since they are 4-14 and have blown the NL East lead. The Mets need to add a pitcher at the MLB trade deadline, and Pirates' lefty Andrew Heaney could be the right piece. Advertisement The Pirates are well out of playoff contention. While Paul Skenes would be the dream trade acquisition for any team, the Buccos are unlikely to make him available. With the incredible amount of pitching injuries on the Mets, any starter would be an improvement. Paul Blackburn, Kodai Senga, Griffin Canning, Sean Manaea, Tylor Megill, and Drew Smith are all on the injured list as July 4th approaches. With the expanded Wild Card in both leagues, there have been fewer sellers at the MLB trade deadline in recent years. That will certainly be true this year, as the American League race has six teams within six games of the final spot. That leads to teams holding onto their pieces for postseason runs that could end up ending in September. But the Pirates won't be one of those teams and should trade Heaney before the deadline. He will be a free agent at the end of the year, so a trade should be on the way. None of their other starting pitchers are free agents for multiple years, a product of their prospect-heavy rotation. The MLB trade deadline won't be kind to buyers, so this trade could land a decent prospect for the Pirates. That should be no problem for the Mets, who are trying to win the World Series this year. Advertisement Why should the Mets trade for Andrew Heaney? Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Heaney has been on six different MLB teams across his 12-year career. The lefty has been solid throughout most of his stops, with a post-deadline Yankees stint as the lone exception. This year, he has made 17 starts with a 4.16 ERA. But two poor starts have inflated that number in recent weeks. In his first 14 starts, he had a 3.33 ERA. He gave up seven earned runs in consecutive starts in June before getting back on track against the Cardinals. Heaney is left-handed, which the Mets do not have a lot of in their rotation. David Peterson has been one of their lone excellent starters, and Manaea has not pitched all year. Heaney can add a third strong lefty to their postseason roster, which will be important with some of the deep lineups in the National League. Advertisement Heaney has done well against some solid playoff teams this year. He threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Yankees, gave up just two runs against the Padres, and threw six one-run innings against the Phillies. That should be promising for the Mets, who do not have a lot of playoff experience in their rotation. The Cubs could be competing for Heaney's services, as they are still trying to fill Justin Steele's hole in the rotation. They should be interested in Sandy Alcantara, but there is no guarantee the Miami Marlins will trade him. That could lead them down the Heaney path, and they are more desperate than the Mets. Juan Soto is on a long-term deal, and Kyle Tucker is not. The Mets are not afraid to spend, which could lead them to sign Dylan Cease or Michael King in free agency next winter. But they are not going to punt away a season with Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor at the height of their powers. That could lead to a trade for Heaney, hoping he recreates his magic from the 2023 Texas Rangers. Royals smack 4 HRs to back strong pitching in win over Pirates
(Photo credit: Denny Medley-Imagn Images) Bobby Witt. Jr. clubbed a two-run homer and had three RBIs, as Kansas City went deep four times, while rookie Noah Cameron allowed two runs over seven strong innings of the Royals' 9-3 home win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. Vinnie Pasquantino, Salvador Perez and Nick Loftin each hit solo homers for the Royals, who have won five of seven following a 5-14 rut. Cameron (3-4), meanwhile, yielded Tommy Pham's two-run home run in the third that snapped Pittsburgh's 30-inning scoreless streak, plus two other hits and struck out seven with a walk, while setting career highs for innings and pitches (109) in his 11th MLB start. Alexander Canario added a ninth-inning RBI single, one of the four hits for Pittsburgh, which has dropped six straight on the road. The Pirates' Andrew Heaney (4-8) allowed four runs and six hits in just three innings. Kansas City opened the scoring in the first. With two out, Pasquantino clubbed a Heaney fastball well over the right-field fence for a 1-0 Royals lead. However, in the third, the Pirates scored for the first time in four games. Henry Davis singled and eventually scored on Pham's long ball that put Pittsburgh ahead 2-1. Kansas City, though, regained the lead for good during its half of the third. Jonathan India and Witt singled, and Maikel Garcia came through with a one-out RBI single. Perez just missed clearing the left-center field wall, settling for a run-scoring double. After Heaney hit Jac Caglianone with a pitch to load the bases, the Royals made it 4-2 after Pittsburgh couldn't turn a potential inning-ending 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Mark Canha. With Pittsburgh's Chase Shugart on the mound, the Royals added on in the fourth. India doubled and came home when Witt sent one the opposite way and over the right-field wall. In the fifth, Perez didn't miss while driving a Shugart pitch into the shrubbery over the left-field wall for a 7-2 Kansas City lead. Witt drove in his final run via a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Loftin went deep in the eighth.--Field Level Media

(Photo credit: Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images) Wilyer Abreu made home run history and the Boston Red Sox scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 13-6 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Abreu hit an inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning and a grand slam in the eighth, becoming the first player to have each of those homers separately in a game since Roger Maris in 1958. Trevor Story and Jarren Duran also homered for Boston in the victory. Garrett Crochet (8-4) gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in six innings. He fanned nine and walked one. Austin Hays hit a solo home run and a two-run triple for Cincinnati. Chase Burns lasted just one out in his second major league start, yielding seven runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks. Phillies 4, Padres 0 Zack Wheeler struck out 10 over eight effective innings as host Philadelphia posted a shutout win over San Diego. Realmuto had two hits for the Phillies, who have won three of their past four games. Bryce Harper returned to the Phillies' lineup for the first time since June 5, having recovered from right wrist inflammation. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. Xander Bogaerts had three hits for San Diego, which has lost three of its past four contests. Jackson Merrill struck out three times in four hitless at-bats. Blue Jays 5, Yankees 4 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in three runs as Toronto edged visiting New York in the opener of a four-game series. Guerrero's two-run single in a four-run sixth inning gave the Blue Jays the lead for good. Brendon Little (4-1) got the win in relief and Jeff Hoffman pitched around a single in the ninth to earn his 19th save. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run home run and Cody Bellinger added a solo shot for the Yankees. Mark Leiter Jr. (4-5) entered in relief of Carlos Rodon in the pivotal sixth inning and took the loss. Orioles 10, Rangers 6 (11 innings) Luis Vazquez and Ramon Laureano had RBI hits in the 11th inning before Gunnar Henderson added a two-run double, lifting Baltimore to a wild win in Arlington, Texas. Henderson hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning before teammate Colton Cowser added a solo shot, but the Rangers equalized on Adolis Garcia's three-run blast against Keegan Akin (3-0). Gary Sanchez hit a three-run double for Baltimore, and Laureano finished with four hits, three of them doubles. Marcus Semien had three hits for Texas, including a two-run homer. Hoby Milner (1-2) yielded four runs, three earned, in the 11th. Pirates 7, Cardinals 0 Andrew Heaney and Chase Shugart combined on a four-hit shutout and the Pittsburgh offense remained hot during a rout of visiting St. Louis. In a game delayed 71 minutes by rain at the start, Heaney (4-7) held St. Louis hitless until the sixth inning. Heaney threw 6 2/3 innings and gave up three hits (all singles). Shugart threw the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one single while sealing the Pirates' fourth consecutive victory and their sixth win in the past eight games. The Cardinals lost for only the fourth time in their past 14 games and had a three-game winning streak snapped. St. Louis' three most recent defeats were all shutouts. Mariners 6, Royals 2 Randy Arozarena hit two homers and drove in four runs and Cal Raleigh went deep for the major-league-leading 33rd time this season as Seattle defeated visiting Kansas City. Mariners starter George Kirby (2-4) allowed one run on three hits over six innings as the Mariners earned their second victory in a row and their sixth in the past nine games. The Royals lost for the eighth time in nine games. Kansas City starter Michael Wacha (4-8) cruised through the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, before Arozarena went deep to right-center to tie the score at 1-all. Wacha went five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Diamondbacks 4, Giants 2 Alek Thomas had three hits and scored twice, including the go-ahead run on a Geraldo Perdomo single in the seventh inning, and Arizona defeated San Francisco in the opener of a four-game series in Phoenix. After a two-run double by Tyler Fitzgerald drew the Giants even at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, the Diamondbacks pushed across the eventual difference-maker in the bottom of the inning against San Francisco ace Logan Webb. Fitzgerald collected two doubles and Dominic Smith had a double and a single for the Giants, who lost for the sixth time in their past seven games. Athletics 6, Rays 4 Lawrence Butler lined a two-run, tiebreaking triple in the ninth inning as the Athletics won at Tampa Bay. Sean Newcomb (2-4) got the win, throwing only two pitches to end the eighth inning. A's left fielder Colby Thomas, in his major league debut, ended the frame by throwing out Brandon Lowe at the plate on a potential go-ahead single. Mason Miller notched his 16th save with a scoreless ninth. Shea Langeliers homered for the A's in his return from the injured list. Junior Caminero bashed a two-run shot for the Rays. Pete Fairbanks (3-2) served up Butler's decisive hit. --Field Level Media
