Adyar pavement work drags on for 2 months
Chennai: A pavement project on Gandhi Nagar 1st Main Road at Adyar, meant to be completed in three weeks, has stretched to nearly two months, with exposed cables, missing concrete slabs, and unsafe conditions forcing pedestrians on to busy roads.
The 200m-long median walkway between the main road and service lane remains incomplete, leaving senior citizens and pedestrians to navigate a hazardous path.
At multiple locations, trees have been encased in concrete with no space left for water percolation. Several slabs are stacked along the service road, eating into parking space and blocking pedestrian movement. "Workers don't come regularly. If the Corporation takes up a job, it should finish it," said Ramesh, an auto driver who frequently commutes on the stretch.

"Elderly people going to nearby restaurants risk tripping on slabs or getting caught in low-lying wires. The work needs to be completed urgently," said a local.
Though the area falls under the bus route roads department, the pavement work is being handled by the zonal office. Assistant commissioner Heartin Rozario of zone 13 said steps would be taken to speed up the work.
Ward committee chairman Durairaj attributed the delay to a CM event scheduled nearby. "Workers were diverted for arrangements. I will inspect the stretch and ensure the pavement is completed in the next two-three days," he said.
Councillor of ward 173, Subashini Durai, did not respond to calls.
