Major Lawrence Shankland update as Hearts jet out to Spain for pre-season training camp

HEARTS are jetting off to Spain this morning for their pre-season training camp WITHOUT striker Lawrence Shankland. Jambos boss Derek McInnes had hoped to persuade him to commit to the Tynecastle club in a further round of talks this week. Advertisement 2 Lawrence Shankland is a key Hearts transfer target Credit: Alamy 2 Derek McInnes and his squad jet out to Spain today Credit: Shutterstock Editorial And he made it clear he wanted him to join his players on their summer trip. But Del's discussions have failed to reach a positive outcome and further doubt over Shankland's future at Hearts has now grown. The 29-year-old is out of contract so free to move elsewhere and has options in both England and abroad. McInnes has been reluctant to put a timescale on when he needs the Scotland striker to make his mind up - but has warned he won't wait much longer. Advertisement He remains convinced staying put is Shankland's best option and has made several pleas to the ex-Dundee United and Aberdeen forward in an attempt to secure him for next season. But with the Jambos players flying to Spain early this morning without Shankland as part of the party, the chances of him signing a new deal appear to be plummeting. McInnes has already added striker Claudio Braga in this window, with Elton Kabangu's loan from USG made permanent. While the door on Shankland is unlikely to be closed completely on the back of his decision to stay put in Scotland, the Jambos are ready to crank up their search for his replacement in the coming days. Advertisement The striker was last sighted undergoing some additional pre-pre-season training in Dubai in the company of none other than Rangers captain James Tavernier. He's had a busy summer already, after tying the knot with his new wife Nicole at a plush Scottish wedding venue at the end of last month. Rangers transfer special including Coady latest, why Turgeman move could be off & why Shankland's a no-brainer He's also been linked with a move to West Brom in England. Links between him and Rangers have gone cold recently with a new broom at Ibrox since the Andrew Cavenagh/49ers Enterprises takeover, but the sight of Shankland training with Tavernier made many Gers fans curious enough at least to see if something could still happen on the transfer front. Here are the latest transfer rumours surrounding Scottish football on Saturday morning, including Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and the Hearts. Hearts youngster completes switch Hearts have confirmed that teenage midfielder Macaulay Tait has re-joined newly promoted Livingston on a season-long loan deal. The 19-year-old spent the second-half of last season on loan at Almondvale, playing 23 times as David Martindale's side won promotion back to the top flight of Scottish football via the playoffs. According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, the deal is understood to have a break clause which can be activated in January, if required. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A statement on Hearts website read: 'Macaulay will now continue his development at the Home of the Set Fare Arena and everyone at Hearts wishes him the best of luck for the season ahead.' Macaulay Tait has re-joined Livingston on a season-long loan deal. | SNS Group Hibs departure confirmed Hibs midfielder Nathan Moriah-Welsh has departed Easter Road after agreeing a two-year deal with EFL League One club Mansfield Town. The 23-year-old Guyana international made 31 Scottish Premiership appearances in total following his move from AFC Bournemouth in January 2024, but has departed the club this summer after failing to nail down a regular first team spot last season. 'Everything seemed to make sense so it's the right move at the right time to go and push on," said Moriah-Welsh upon confirmation of the move. "I always want to improve as a player and a person. I'm an energetic midfielder who wants to get up and down and likes a tackle." Moriah-Welsh has joined The Stags for an undisclosed fee. Nathan Moriah-Welsh has left Hibs after 18-months at Easter Road. | SNS Group Ex-Rangers ace close to £34m switch Former Rangers loanee Malik Tillman is on the verge of completing a £34million move Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen, according to a report from Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The American midfielder enjoyed successful season on loan at Ibrox during the 2022/23 season, scoring 12 goals and providing five assists on the way to winning the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It was strongly reported that Rangers had an option to buy Tillman following his season-long loan from Bayern Munich, with a reported fee of around £5.8million mooted. However, it was not activated by the Light Blues and he instead joined PSV Eindhoven the following summer on an initial loan, with the Dutch giants opting to make the deal permanent a year later. Romano wrote on his official X account: 'Bayer Leverkusen are now at final stages of Malik Tillman deal with details to be sorted.. and then, all done. Bayer are confident to get deal done for fee around €35/40m. Structure of the agreement now being discussed.' Malik Tillman had a successful season on loan at Rangers in 2022/23. | SNS Group Celtic deal 'on brink' Celtic youngster Matthew Anderson is 'on the brink' of a move to Belgian side KV Kortrijk for an undisclosed fee this month. The 21-year-old Scotland youth international has spent the last two campaigns on loan to Admira Wacker in the Austrian second division, featuring a total of 43 times, but looks set to depart the club permanently this summer in search of first team football. According to the Celtic Way, former B team captain Anderson will sign a three-year-deal at the Guldensporen Stadion after undergoing a medical, with the Belgian outfit fighting off competition from EFL Leagur One club Exeter City, Austrian duo Ried and WSG Tirol and Toulouse to the signing of the youngster. Aberdeen and Hearts were also credited with an interest in the defender. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Celtic Matthew Anderson is set to leave the club this summer. | SNS Group Rangers mega move encouraged Rangers have been told that Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen would be a 'revelation' at Ibrox, if they decided to firm up their reported interest in the midfielder this summer. The 33-year-old Danish international was linked with a potential switch to Glasgow by former Red Devils assistant manager Mick Brown earlier this month, and now former England winger Chris Waddle has fully endorsed the move, urging head coach Russell Martin to bring the experienced midfielder to Govan following the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

McGlynn aims to keep 'punching above weight'

Falkirk have come a long, long way under John McGlynn. Languishing in League One with no sign of revival, their upturn in fortunes rested on the appointment of the former Hearts and Raith Rovers manager three years ago. Advertisement Since then, the trajectory has almost entirely been one way. Upwards. Under McGlynn, Falkirk are reborn and now take their place at the top table of Scottish football for the first time in 15 years. With just over a month until their opening Premiership fixture against Dundee United, McGlynn tells BBC Scotland about their remarkable journey, and assesses just how far they can go. How will Falkirk approach their top flight test? After back-to-back promotions, adopting an eye-catching, attacking style of play, there's incredible excitement among long-suffering Falkirk fans. "We'll respect the league, it's a really tough league, but we want to go up and mix it," said 63-year-old McGlynn. Advertisement "We know we'll have to punch above our weight but that's what we've done. "We're up for it. We're there on merit and want to embrace the challenge and be positive in how we go about things. "We want to maintain the style as best as we possibly can." That mentality served Falkirk well after promotion from League One. In preparation for their Championship-winning season, McGlynn cited the example of Ipswich Town to his squad. After promotion from England's third tier, they went straight up again to the Premier League. Falkirk used that template effectively but will look to stop there given the Tractor Boys' recent relegation. Advertisement However, despite often hearing promoted managers speak of survival as the priority, it's clear Falkirk's ambitions lie beyond that. "Who won the league the year before in the Championship," McGlynn asked rhetorically. "Dundee United? Where did Dundee United finish? Fourth. "We can take them as an example. The year before that, was it Dundee. Tony Docherty did remarkably well, they got top six. "I appreciate they have not been five years in League One but I think there's an example there that you can go up and do well." So what would satisfy McGlynn? "Top six would be an incredible achievement," he said without hesitation. Advertisement Continuity in the squad has been key to their success and it seems will be a theme again with the experienced Brian Graham and Scott Bain the only additions so far, with a few loan options potentially to follow. Little time for reflection as toughest test looms "It's been a little bit of a whirlwind," McGlynn conceded when reflecting back to those Championship-winning scenes, and everything that's happened along the way in Falkirk's incredible rise. "I'm not really sure it's really sunk in. I think it'll be in years to come where maybe you can reflect and think that was a bit of an achievement. The ambition kind of flows on to the next stage and the next stage now is the Premiership." Advertisement It's worth considering that some Falkirk fans simply don't know what's it's like to be a Premiership club. They were last in the top tier in 2010. Three years ago there was absolutely no sign of the success they've now lived and delighted in. "We've done something that is not so easy to do," McGlynn explained. "Having to start basically from scratch, coming into a team that was finishing sixth in League One. Two seasons later, invincible and then in the third season getting into the Premiership. "It's a great achievement." That achievement led to back-to-back manager of the year acceptance speeches at the PFA Scotland awards. Advertisement McGlynn is the only man with three of those prizes and it's something he seems genuinely taken aback by. "Quite embarrassed, actually, to be thinking that I'm the one who's got three," he said. "There have been so many great managers in Scotland. Very proud, very honoured, very privileged to be in that position." Falkirk academy returns Scott Arfield came through Falkirk's Academy before moving on to Rangers and Burnley [SNS] As Falkirk struggled in the lower reaches, cutbacks had to be made and one area that was controversially scrapped was their youth academy. The place the likes of Scott Arfield emerged from has now been reinstated to the delight of all connected with the club. Advertisement "We're going ahead with a full-scale academy," McGlynn explained. "We're ready to go from under 10, all the way up. "It's huge for the Falkirk public to have their academy back in place. There was a big uproar at the time. "It will take time and it might be a few years down the line before we can be producing players that are playing in the first team and possible sellable assets. "At least now we have that infrastructure. There's been too many local players going to every other football club because there's been nothing here for them, and now that's not the case." You can hear the full interview with John McGlynn on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound on Saturday 28th June from 14:00 BST.

New Hearts signings join a 'huge operation'

Derek McInnes is preparing for season 2025/26 in the Scottish Premiership Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! It has been a busy and productive summer transfer window at Hearts, who depart for a week-long pre-season training camp in Spain on Saturday. Head coach Derek McInnes has welcomed recruits from across Europe, with various new accents heard echoing along Riccarton's corridors. Importantly, they all speak English and are being integrated into Edinburgh life as part of Hearts' operation. That operation is a sizeable one, McInnes noted. He is still familiarising himself with new work colleagues a month after leaving Kilmarnock. He will take 28 players to Spain and all six new signings are due to travel - Norwegian right-back Christian Borchgrevink, Greek winger Alexandros Kyziridis, Belgian striker Elton Kabangu, Irish midfielder Oisin McEntee, Portuguese striker Claudio Braga and Scottish centre-back Stuart Findlay. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Kazakhstan international winger Islam Chesnokov has agreed a pre-contract with Hearts and the Edinburgh club would like to sign him in a permanent transfer before the summer window closes. There may be one or two additional signings thereafter, but that could depend on which players leave. McInnes took charge of a 31-man first-team squad at the start of pre-season, including the new arrivals. 'Everyone has settled in well, they all speak good English and are interacting brilliantly,' said the manager. 'The communication is vital, especially in key positions on the pitch. From a recruitment perspective, it's something we spoke about and from a Hearts point of view it's something we wanted to be a key part of it with the players we signed from outside the UK. 'Footballers are footballers, they're normally good lads who enjoy being about their team-mates. They set about their training with enthusiasm and vigour. Each and every one of them has brought something different. Like every dressing-room, some are brighter and bubblier than others but everyone has settled well. Banking and housing for new signings as the Scottish football season 2025/26 nears 'The club has been brilliant helping them settle, helping them with their accommodation, bank accounts, helping them with their families and that sort of stuff. It's a time where players have to be really selfish and focused on getting fit. They have to be single-minded but the club is great at taking care of the other stuff. We are just accelerating their work, putting demands on them, so that integration is essential.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hearts' expansion in recent years involves greater staff numbers at Riccarton, but McInnes is aware of the club's ultimate priority. 'This club is a big operation,' he added. 'We are part of it here at Oriam. There's the women's team, there's the academy, there's under-18s, there's the B team, it's a huge organisation. Everyone's job is better at Hearts, everyone's life is easier if the first team is winning so we need to make sure we get a winning team on the pitch. I am not surprised by the stature of Hearts, it's what I expected.'
