Advanced arms on Kerala Police modernisation radar

KOCHI: In a major step towards upgrading its law enforcement capabilities, Kerala Police is set to revamp its arsenal with the induction of advanced firearms and equipment. As part of its 2025-26 modernisation plan, the police department plans to procure 530 new weapons and over three lakh rounds of ammunition. Among the prospective acquisitions are 100 INSAS rifles, 100 AK-203 rifles, 100 Heckler & Koch submachine guns, 30 high-precision sniper rifles, and 200 pistols. The sniper rifles under consideration include the Indian-made Saber 338 and the German-made Heckler & Koch PSG1 — both known for their long-range accuracy and used widely by elite forces. The procurement of 200 Glock or Masada pistols is also in the pipeline. A fund of Rs 7.75 crore has been earmarked for weapon purchases this financial year, a senior police officer told the TNIE. 'One of the key focus areas in our modernisation plan is the procurement of new-generation weapons for our specialised units. Commando units and special operation groups (SOG) will be prioritised. A tender for 100 AK-203 rifles has already been floated. The aim is to strengthen the firepower and tactical capabilities of our forces,' the officer said. Kerala Police began using Heckler & Koch submachine guns in 2020, initially deploying them with the Thunderbolt Commando units. Earlier this year, the force also procured around 100 TriCa rifles manufactured by the Ordnance Factory in Tiruchirappalli. Additionally, a small number of Ishapore sniper rifles have been inducted since 2021. 'Now, we are planning to induct more advanced sniper rifles. The Saber 338, developed by an Indian firm and currently used by elite military and paramilitary forces, is one of the options. We are also evaluating the Heckler & Koch PSG1, a globally renowned sniper rifle. Around 30 sniper rifles are being considered.

Docs: Gig Harbor family shot at close range in the head; one was still alive when fire was set

A man has been arrested and charged, accused of killing his father and brother before setting their Gig Harbor home on fire. On April 8, around 8 p.m., crews were called to a large house fire on 14th Ave NW in Gig Harbor. Neighbors reported hearing a loud explosion before the fire broke out. Two bodies, a 61-year-old and a 31-year-old were pulled from the fire. They were identified as father and son. It was later determined that the two men were killed before the fire was set. Court documents say both victims had gunshot wounds to the head and were shot at close range. One of the victims had carbon monoxide in his blood, indicating that he was still alive, despite having been shot in the head, when the fire tore through the home. Another family member called law enforcement on April 10, saying he was trying to get in contact with the victim's other son, but was unable to. Later, family was able to contact that other son at work, but he refused to speak with them. He also refused to speak with officers or hear anything about the news of his family, according to court documents. Huitron Campos was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and arson. According to court documents, Huitron Campos' phone pinged by the Gig Harbor house at the time of the fire. There was no listed motive for the alleged murders, but court documents said that Huitron Campos' father had taken out about $100,000 from his retirement to pay for a variety of expenses. A family member reported that he brought money from this account to Mexico to pay off construction costs, but it is not known how much money he brought with him. According to court documents, the following were found when a search warrant was executed for Campos' car and property: In a shed, propane and gas tanks were found. In Campos' vehicle, investigators located a grey rag that Deputy Fire Marshall Cody Jenkins said had tested positive for some accelerant (he used a self-calibrating handheld device that tests for accelerants) In the residence, two cell phones were found in Campos' bedroom. In that same bedroom, a ballistic vest, a (13 round capacity) 9mm gun magazine, Heckler & Koch (VP9) 9mm pistol with 4' barrel, a (13 round capacity) magazine seated in the firearm with only 10 rounds in it, and a (25 round capacity) box of 9mm Hornady pistol rounds, with only 12 rounds remaining. There are 3 rounds missing (22 total found) reasonably consistent with the number of bullets used to kill the victims. The Hornady brand and caliber, matches that of the casing found at the crime scene by victim [father's] body. Financial documents showing a partial payment of $4,500 in May 2025 at KT Auto Sales Laptop, which is consistent with one seen in Bullseye [shooting range] footage, that Campos used to show images of an Israeli firearm which retails for about $2,700. According to court documents, Campos allegedly asked a gun range employee about this type of firearm, which is not legal in Washington.

German gunmaker Heckler & Koch enters drone defence business

Germany's largest manufacturer of small arms, Heckler & Koch, is entering the drone defence business, the company's chief executive said on Wednesday. The firm has already received an order for such a system, Jens Bodo Koch said at company headquarters in Oberndorf, south-west of Stuttgart. He did not provide further details. "Drones pose an incredible threat to infantry soldiers, for which there are currently only a few solutions," he said. Heckler & Koch's new drone defence system involves grenade launchers or automatic grenade launchers that are mounted on a vehicle turret and equipped with a sensor box that uses artificial intelligence to detect drones in the sky and assess their threat level. The grenade is then programmed to explode near the drone. "A metal cloud is created in the air, which the drone flies into and is destroyed," Koch explained. He is not related to the company's founder, Theodor Koch. Collaboration on systems development For its drone defence system, Heckler & Koch is collaborating with the artificial intelligence specialist Autonomous Teaming from Munich. The German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall is supplying control components for the grenades, while the vehicle turret is provided by a Slovenian company. "We are the system provider that brings it all together," Koch said. The project is still in its development phase, with initial firing tests already conducted, but is expected to be completed and ready for sale by the end of the year.
