AI crash victims' kin hounded for donations after cremations

Vadodara/Surat: Vadodara resident Heer Prajapati's phone hasn't stopped ringing since the Air India 171 crash. But instead of condolences, he is flooded with calls — urging him to make donations in memory of his late mother, Kalpana Prajapati, whom he cremated on June 15. "I've been constantly receiving phone calls and messages from various charity organisations and social workers. They're urging me to donate money or goods in my mother's name. Some have even visited our home and tried to convince us," said Heer, a resident of the Manjalpur area. He added, "I kept refusing. We're still grieving her loss. No one in the family is in the right frame of mind. But the calls haven't stopped. I don't even know how they got my number." Heer isn't alone. Jalpesh Gondaliya from Surat, who lost his elder brother Jayesh in the crash, has faced similar harassment. "Since my brother's cremation, I've been inundated with calls from people claiming to be volunteers from social organisations in Ahmedabad, Amreli, and Rajkot. Other victim families I know have also been bombarded with similar calls," said Jalpesh. He added that some callers were extremely insensitive. "One person sent me a QR code for donation. Another called me at least 50 times, insisting I donate a specific amount. The authorities must take action against whoever leaked our contact numbers." Families said many of the callers used emotional appeals, while others crossed the line with hurtful or manipulative comments about their loved ones' deaths. Chaitresh Patel, another Vadodara resident who lost his wife Nainisy in the crash, shared a similar experience. "The harassment doesn't stop with calls or messages. Some come directly to our home asking for donations. I turned them all away. I don't appreciate this kind of pressure in the name of charity. I'll do what I want, when I feel ready," he said.
