Nevada City named a top 10 best small town in America by Country Living
NEVADA CITY – Nevada City has been named by Country Living as one of the best small towns in the nation. "Not surprised," said a group of visitors. That was the overwhelming response when CBS Sacramento told people that Nevada City made Country Living's top 10 list for America's best small towns in 2025. It's the only California city to make the list. "I think it's wonderful to be recognized and they're all finding out what we already know, which is what a fabulous, wonderful place this is," Nevada City Mayor Gary Petersen said. "We stand out because of how unique we are. This very small, historic town that embraces new people," said Nevada County supervisor for District 1 Heidi Hall. Tourism is the number one economic driver for Nevada City. Emelia Terry is visiting downtown with friends for her birthday. "I turn 15, yeah. I just really like it, the scene, it's very cozy," Terry said. "It's the vibe of the whole place." "It's a lot more old-fashioned and it has a lot more character and I love that," said Rylee Harvey, also visiting from Brownsville. Country Living agreed after spending hours talking to locals and hitting the road that Nevada City earned its spot on the list. Also being named the 'Best for California Dreamin'. "Everyone knows everyone and at this time I think people crave community. We all hang together, play together. So we want people to come in and check out our really unique shops we have here," Hall said. "My family lived here and I always knew I loved it and I really came back to put down roots," said owner and operator of the Fur Traders Wendy Ermshar. This shop owner was born and raised in Nevada City. She says the historic charm coupled with creative freedom is what draws people in. "We don't have any chain stores in downtown Nevada City, there's no formula businesses. Everything here is the unique creativity of a passionate entrepreneur," she said. "It's so nice, you can explore all the styles," Harvey said. From the gold rush era to the current art scene, Nevada City is proof that great things come in small, scenic packages. "It's an amazing place. I hear it all the time from people I introduce, 'I can't believe this place'. So yeah, come and check it out. Find out for yourself. You'll find out that the article is right," Peterson said.

Reliable high-speed internet coming to more remote Sierra Nevada communities
( — Some of the most remote areas of the foothills and Sierra Nevada will finally be connected to reliable high-speed internet thanks to a partnership between a local internet provider and Nevada County. On Tuesday, Nevada County approved over $778,000 in funding to continue the work of bringing high-speed and reliable internet to remote parts of the county. 'Accessible and affordable broadband is essential to our economy, our education system and our healthcare in this country,' Board of Supervisors Chair Heidi Hall said. 'Every additional household we connect is a win for our residents and our economy.' This is the county's third round of funding for its Last Mile Broadband Grant program which began in 2019 to invest in building broadband infrastructure. Sacramento City Council approves additional Southside Park Pool repairs Under the first round of funding in 2020, Oasis Broadband, a Truckee-based internet provider brought broadband connections to hundreds of Nevada County residents in the Prosser Dam area of Truckee. This most recent round of funding will be split between locally-owned companies and AT&T, according to Nevada County. The smaller companies will work in the areas around Nevada City, Donner Summit, Kingvale, Norden and Soda Springs and AT&T will be working in the area along McCourtney Road and portions of Higgins Corner, according to Nevada County. 'County government has no regulatory or oversight authority whatsoever over broadband, yet there is an expectation as a community that we will solve the broadband problem,' former Director of Information and General Services for Nevada County Steve Monaghan said. 'We're not a utility provider but we're trying to make it as attractive as possible.' Teen rescued after becoming trapped in abandoned Northern California mine shaft With billions of dollars being allocated by the state and federal government to address the nationwide broadband disparity in the nation, Nevada County is hoping they can provide funding on a yearly basis. 'Now the government is finally realizing the public is so desperate and traditional ISPs (Internet Service Providers) refuse to invest in the remote, low-profit areas. Progressive counties are ready to give money at the county, state and federal level,' Devin Koch of Oasis Broadband said. Since Oasis began spreading broadband across the county they have brought high-speed internet to Truckee, Olympic Valley, Lake Tahoe West Shore, Tahoe Vista and Alpine Meadows.
