How the Mobile Crypto Project Helium Onboarded AT&T
How the Mobile Crypto Project Helium Onboarded AT&T originally appeared on TheStreet. In a world where crypto projects are often accused of being all hype and no substance, Helium has been working on one of the most promising validations of blockchain infrastructure yet. For years, the decentralized wireless network has been laying the groundwork and is now working with AT&T and other major carriers to offload cellular traffic onto Helium's network of hotspots in times of peak demand. It's also now offering a free mobile plan for users, all possible because they've incentivized people to install hotspots to earn rewards via tokens. With devices already operating across the U.S. and Mexico, Helium's Head of Protocol Abhay Kumar says hotspots have now become a solution not just for Helium's own mobile service, but for legacy carriers struggling to meet demand in dense environments like stadiums, cafes, and music venues. "What we're starting to see is that this kind of deployment model is not only helpful for what we were focused on for many years, which is internet of things, but also for for cell phone coverage," he told Coinage. "Cell phone towers are really hard to deploy, expensive to maintain. The standards keep changing and so network operators like AT&T and others are looking for new ways to create and use new kinds of networks." If the model keeps working, it wouldn't just be a win for Helium and its HNT token, it would be a win for DePIN as a concept to show that tokenizing network effects to build out physical infrastructure can work with community participation. Others in the Solana ecosystem, including decentralized mapping project Hivemapper, have attempted to show the same — by taking on big tech behemoths by using tokens to blur the lines of users and incentivized co-owners in a network. There have been mixed results. Hivemapper's HONEY token has fallen by about 70% over the last year, while Helium's HNT token has fallen about 30% over the same time frame. Some analysts have argued the market is undervaluing DePIN tokens that carry value in the physical world. But as Kumar explains, part of that is due to the pressure from the last administration at the Securities and Exchange Commission and Chair Gary Gensler. The SEC charged Helium for an alleged unregistered security offering in January only to drop the complaint months later in April after leadership changed. As Coinage has covered, new crypto-friendly leadership at the SEC is opening the door for more experiments with tokens and value accrual. Kumar says Helium is now exploring new possibilities beyond simple token burns to further extend ownership over the network of hotspots. "When people are doing work to actually deploy them and monitor them and provide services to users, like that should be allowed," he said, adding that he expects answers to be figured out this year. "We definitely feel a change in that tone and we're excited to work with the [SEC's] Crypto Task Force. We've already had great conversations with them, and we hope to continue to do so and continue to innovate because we think that there's a lot more that we can do." As Helium co-founder Amir Haleem previously told Coinage, the model is gaining traction outside the U.S. as well. In Mexico, Helium partnered with Movistar, a subsidiary of Telefonica, to pilot coverage in two cities. 'They saw a tremendous opportunity to provide better services for their customers,' Kumar said. 'We're hoping to... expand out even further into the areas that are underserved in Mexico and also in major cities." With more than 90,000 active hotspots already deployed and a new $50 million grant pool launched to onboard large-scale deployers, Kumar says the team is aiming to 10x the network: 'Let's get to 900,000.' Do you use mobile data while connected to Wi-Fi? It's complicated.
Robert Triggs / Android Authority When it comes to smartphones, the common sentiment is that your Wi-Fi network will always take precedence over your mobile connection. In other words, those with data caps generally don't have to worry about mobile data being consumed during lengthy Wi-Fi sessions. But is this always true? Generally, yes, but the situation is slightly more complicated than you might think. There are indeed a few reasons your phone could end up using mobile data even when connected to Wi-Fi. Were you aware your phone can switch to mobile data while on Wi-Fi? 0 votes Yes, but it's never caused me any issues. NaN % No, I had no idea. NaN % It's likely not a bug, but a feature Recently, I noticed my free Helium line was using data faster than expected, considering I rarely used it and consistently had my Wi-Fi turned on. Upon investigation, I realized my mistake was twofold. First, I'd accidentally set Helium as my primary mobile data line instead of my Verizon account. This explained part of the issue, but not the sudden spike in mobile data usage when connected to my home network. Fortunately, I stumbled upon a well-timed Reddit thread from user Unlucky_Ad_4873. The thread was unrelated to my exact issue, involving a Pixel 7 using excessive data despite a Wi-Fi connection. A Mint Mobile representative incorrectly claimed this happens unless mobile data is explicitly turned off. Interestingly, a US Mobile rep previously made a similar mistaken claim about an iPhone, suggesting this misconception is somewhat widespread. Features like 5G priority or Wi-Fi Assist may result in mobile data usage even if you are technically connected to Wi-Fi. From personal experience (and corroborated by numerous responses), your phone typically won't use mobile data simply because it's turned on. Usually, your device prioritizes Wi-Fi connections. However, exceptions exist — and they're usually intentional. The original thread I stumbled upon eventually revealed a helpful tip: check your Wi-Fi Assist settings. Many modern phones automatically switch to mobile data if they detect your Wi-Fi connection is slow or unstable. This feature has various names, such as Intelligent Wi-Fi on my Galaxy S24. When I checked this setting, it turned out to be precisely the cause of my data spike. Further digging revealed intermittent issues with my Spectrum Wi-Fi network at the same time as the increased data usage. Consequently, my Helium line rapidly consumed all its available data. My problem was fairly straightforward, but, in addition to a Wi-Fi Assist/Intelligent WiFi feature, the iPhone and select Android devices also have a few other data settings that could cause similar issues. For example, the iPhone lets you give preference to 5G data over other connections, including Wi-Fi. How to turn off Wi-Fi Assist, Intelligence, and other similar features Typically, these features are beneficial, especially since most US consumers have unlimited data plans. However, some plans have usage caps leading to reduced performance after reaching limits, and budget plans often have strict data limits. In these scenarios, disabling such features can be wise. Settings vary slightly depending on your device, but here are key adjustments you might want to consider: iPhone users will want to turn off Wi-Fi Assist and ensure 5G isn't prioritized Wi-Fi Assist is on by default, but to turn it off, simply: Go to Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data Next, scroll until you find Wi-Fi Assist and tap the slider to disable it. To turn off the 5G prioritization feature on your iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular , then tap Cellular Data . , then tap . Next, go to Data Mode and then Allow More Data on 5G. Turn the slider off. Pixel users: Turn off automatic Wi-Fi switching The Pixel doesn't give an official name to this feature, but it will automatically switch to Wi-Fi, usually by default. To change this: Go to Wifi > WiFi Preferences > Advanced . . Next, scroll until you see Switch to Mobile data automatically and hit the slider. Galaxy users: Turn off Intelligent Wi-Fi and consider adjusting a few other settings For the Galaxy S25, you perform a fairly similar process: Go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi. Next, go to the three-dot menu and select Intelligent Wi-Fi. Here, you'll want to turn off Switch to Mobile data. While in the Intelligent Wi-Fi menu, you'll also note a few other settings like Turn Wi-Fi on/off automatically than you might want to consider disabling as well.

This new kids plan runs on T-Mobile's network and is just $5 a month
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Helium has launched a new $5 a month Sprout plan for kids, offering 3GB of data with unlimited talk and text and enhanced privacy. Unlike the free Helium plan, Sprout does not require sharing location or private data and comes with flexible parental controls. The plan is ideal for parents wanting an affordable way to test if their child is ready for their first phone. Earlier this year, Helium unveiled a new free plan that gives users 3GB of data on the T-Mobile network in exchange for sharing location data. I spent some time with the plan and found it to be a great backup line that can extend your coverage if you're on a different network, like AT&T or Verizon. Building on the success of its free plan, the company has now introduced a new offering designed with kids in mind. Officially dubbed 'Sprout,' the new plan actually looks a lot like the free plan on paper, though this one will cost you $5 a month. Just like the free plan, you only get 3GB of data, but you do get unlimited talk and text as well. The biggest difference is that you don't have to share your location data or other private details—privacy is considered paramount, especially for younger users. You'll also find flexible parental controls for managing the plan, and you can always upgrade to one of Helium's other offerings if your child outgrows the service and needs more data. I'm actually excited about this plan and am considering switching my son over to it to see how well it pans out. We already have a limited plan for him anyway, so this won't be a big change. Still, if the service is anything like Helium's free plan, I think it's very likely this could be a perfect fit for parents who are looking for a cheap, affordable plan to see if their child is really ready for the responsibility of their first phone.
