Poland evacuates around 160 people from Israel

WARSAW: Poland on Wednesday said it had evacuated around 160 people from Israel as that country's conflict with Iran escalates, adding that another plane would bring home dozens more on Thursday. Foreigners have rushed to leave Israel after it launched an unprecedented bombing campaign last Friday, targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities and sparking retaliation from Tehran. 'The first group of Poles has just landed in Warsaw.... They arrived in Poland via Egypt. Another flight tomorrow,' Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X. Deputy Foreign Minister Henryka Moscicka-Dendys told reporters there were around 160 people, most of them Poles, on the plane, 'including small children'. 'Tomorrow (Thursday) there will be another flight and that plane will fly from Amman... It will be 65 people, and this time it will only be Polish citizens,' she added. She said some employees of the Polish embassy in Iran would also fly home, along with a few private citizens. Moscicka-Dendys said that group was currently on its way overland from Tehran to the border with Azerbaijan, for a flight from Baku. Israel says its offensive is aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons -- an ambition Tehran denies. The adversaries have for years waged a shadow war through proxies and covert operations, with Israel fighting Iranian-backed groups such as Hamas since October 2023.

Over 700 foreigners flee Iran to Azerbaijan, Armenia

BAKU: More than 700 foreign nationals have crossed from Iran into neighbouring Azerbaijan and Armenia since Israel began striking the country last week, government officials in Baku and Yerevan said on Tuesday. The Caucasus countries border Iran's northwest, with the closest crossing into Azerbaijan around 500 kilometres from Tehran by road. 'Since the start of the military escalation between Israel and Iran, more than 600 citizens of 17 countries have been evacuated from Iran via Azerbaijan,' a government source said on Tuesday. The evacuees, who crossed the border via the Astara checkpoint on the Caspian Sea coast, are being transported to Baku airport and 'flown to their home countries on international flights', the source said. Among those evacuated are citizens of post-Soviet countries Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as Germany, Spain, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Portugal, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, China and Vietnam. 'In light of the evacuation need, Azerbaijan has temporarily opened its border for those leaving Iran,' the official said. India also evacuated 110 of its citizens from Iran through Armenia, Ani Badalyan, Yerevan's foreign ministry spokeswoman, told journalists. Poland's foreign ministry said it would evacuate part of its embassy staff in Tehran via Baku. 'We have decided to evacuate or support the departure of staff who do not need to remain in the country, so-called non-essential personnel,' Deputy Foreign Minister Henryka Moscicka-Dendys told reporters. 'Our colleagues will try to reach the border with Azerbaijan,' she said, without specifying how many people were involved. Turkmenistan said it had also allowed the transit of around 120 people evacuated from Iran through its territory, mainly citizens of Central Asian countries. — AFP

Poland prepares to evacuate nationals from Israel

AFP | Poland is preparing to evacuate 200 of its citizens from Israel to escape the escalating conflict with Iran, the foreign ministry in Warsaw said Monday. "We have implemented an evacuation plan for Polish citizens stranded in Israel through Amman," the capital of neighbouring Jordan, Deputy Foreign Minister Henryka Moscicka-Dendys told reporters. The Poles would be driven by bus to Jordan and from there put on an official plane to Warsaw, with the first flight happening in 48 hours at the earliest, she said. "I assume we will be ready in the next few dozen hours, and the evacuation will only concern people who are stranded in Israel as tourists or for short stays," she added. The deputy minister added that only nine Poles were currently in Iran and the ministry does not plan to arrange their evacuation. Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said Poland was "one of the first countries to take such measures". The Israeli army has been conducting unprecedented strikes on Iran since Friday, prompting retaliatory missile barrages by Tehran.
