Man dives off California waterfall, two others try to save him; all three drown
The bodies of three men who vanished after diving into a Northern California waterfall have now been recovered, authorities said. 'Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,' the Placer County Sheriff's Office posted on social media Sunday. The sheriff's office identified two of the men as Matthew Schoenecker, 50, and Valentino Creus, 59, who both hail from the Los Angeles area. The third was identified as 44-year-old New Yorker Matthew Anthony. The three men went missing the afternoon of June 18, after they reportedly entered the water at Rattlesnake Falls in Soda Springs and did not resurface. The area is located about 40 miles west of North Lake Tahoe. The three men were part of a group of six who ventured to the falls, according to the sheriff's office. The other three people were airlifted out of the area that evening. Personnel from the sheriff's dive and search-and-rescue teams combed the area in search of the missing trio, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Technical Rescue Team. But authorities said those efforts were hindered by poor underwater visibility caused by debris and strong winds. Juan Heredia — a diver with the Stockton-based Angels Recovery Dive Team, a nonprofit that specializes in recovering drowned bodies for grieving families — discovered the trio Saturday morning. Heredia said he located Anthony's body about 45 feet underwater in the waterfall pool that leads into the North Fork American River. He found the bodies of Schoenecker and Creus together under the waterfall, at a depth of about 47 feet. Heredia said he was hired by a family friend and hiked about seven miles through rugged terrain to locate the site and the bodies. Creus, the least experienced of the trio when it came to diving, initially hesitated before jumping into the waterfall, according to Heredia. 'Big Matt [Schoenecker] tried to help Valentino, who was in trouble,' Heredia said, adding that Schoenecker was a former high school diving champion who knew the waterfall well. 'He started panicking and then the two Matts jumped in to save him, but they couldn't and they drowned.'

An East Village grocery store is transforming into an art gallery this month
If you've ever pondered the aesthetic potential of the bodega chip rack, the East Village has just the show for you. Village Gourmet Grocery, the corner store on 2nd Avenue and East 6th Street, is doubling as an art gallery this month, thanks to the nomadic Desnivel Gallery and its founder, artist-curator Maria De Victoria. From now through June 29, the shop's usual offerings of gum, soda and canned beans are sharing space with EN EL KIOSCO, a dreamy and tactile new exhibition by Miami-born artist Juan Jose Heredia. The solo show features paintings rendered on soft fabrics—burlap, mostly—evoking a sense of motion and meditative depth. Heredia, who draws inspiration from the hazy visuals of North Miami and the oceanic pull of surfing, describes painting as 'the only place you can go and deal with color, or with the temperature of being human.' The pieces are sensual and saturated—some figurative, others nearly abstract—and arranged throughout the shop in a way that almost dares you to accidentally knock one over while reaching for a Red Bull. One standout work, 'Bunny ears of absence,' features a pink-eared figure suspended in swirling red, yellow and turquoise tones. Another, 'Anemone Cerberus,' is darker and more ambiguous, where shape and symbolism flirt with the viewer's imagination like pareidolia in action. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Desnivel Gallery (@desnivelgallery) Desnivel Gallery, formerly housed in De Victoria's home basement, has reemerged in street-level East Village storefronts with a mission: 'to highlight the financial challenges of running an art space' and make visual art more accessible to everyday New Yorkers. 'Desnivel aims to increase visibility and accessibility,' De Victoria told EV Grieve, 'allowing the artwork to be seen and experienced at various times of the day.' Mission accomplished: Village Gourmet Grocery is open daily from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. (3 a.m. on weekends), which means you can catch a contemporary art show while grabbing late-night snacks or your morning iced coffee. If you want to go deeper, ask the person behind the counter to show you Heredia's personal sketchbooks tucked away at the register. Just don't forget to pay for your pretzels.

DuPont expands Costa Rica facility for sterile packaging operations
US-based DuPont has expanded its healthcare manufacturing facility in Heredia, Costa Rica, adding sterile packaging capacity for the global medical device industry. This development also increases the capacity of the site's existing medical tubing operations. The Heredia site has grown by 16,000ft² to improve its operations, supporting healthcare customers in the Caribbean and across the Americas. Additional space houses new extrusion equipment and production lines, which will facilitate the production of sterile packaging utilising Tyvek products such as pouches, header bags, and lids. This expansion is expected to boost DuPont's extruded tubing production capacity. James Chambers, senior vice-president and general manager for fluids and flexibles at Spectrum Plastics Group, a DuPont Business, said: 'With this expansion, we are now the first company in Costa Rica and the Caribbean to produce fluid management and sterile packaging offerings for the medical device industry. 'This significantly enhances our robust, growing portfolio of unmatched offerings and capabilities as a trusted supply chain partner to leading global healthcare companies.' The facility's expansion has achieved International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 13485:2016 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications, ensuring that the technical, assembly, and packaging staff adhere to the highest quality standards and guidelines. The facility has transitioned to a 24/7 production schedule to meet the needs of both current and new customers. DuPont's offerings for the healthcare industry encompass extruded tubing and subassemblies, advanced catheter assembly, medical balloons, skin contact devices, smart wearables, additive manufacturing, laser processing, and more. In November 2024, DuPont launched Tyvek with Renewable Attribution, a new addition to its portfolio of Tyvek products designed for healthcare packaging. The company delivers full-service solutions that support a wide range of healthcare applications by combining medical-grade performance materials, component and device solutions, and innovative technology. 9-Month-Old Baby Found Dead Days After Being Swept Away from Parents Whose Car Crashed into River
An infant has been found dead in the Trinity River in California, days after he was swept away following a car crash Baby Oliver disappeared following the crash on Friday, May 1, which left his mother and father with minor to moderate injuries Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have factored into the crash, officials saidA 9-month-old baby boy has been found dead days after he was swept away in a California river following an early morning car crash. Oliver Cox was 'lost in the Trinity River' after the crash on Thursday, May 1, according to a news release from the Trinity County Sheriff's Office (TCSO). CHP spokesperson Keith Krick told McClatchy News that the boy was with his 19-year-old mother and 21-year-old father early that morning when the Lexus sedan they were in went off State Route 299, 'down an embankment, and into the Trinity River.' Despite their attempts to save Oliver, Krick said the baby was ultimately 'swept away.' A diver from out of the area, who traveled to the Big Flat to assist with the search, 'located Oliver deceased and submerged in the Trinity River' on Tuesday, May 6, according to the TCSO. The baby 'was removed from the river" and his family was notified. The TCSO thanked 'all the search teams, who assisted in returning Oliver to his family.' 'Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Oliver,' authorities said in the news release. Michelle Huskey, Oliver's aunt, told NBC affiliate KNVN that the family was returning from a beach trip when the crash occurred. "He was always playful, always happy to see everybody,' she explained. 'He loved his mommy more than anything.' More than $7,800 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign started to support Oliver's family following his disappearance and death. Huskey, who organized the campaign, thanked Juan Heredia, the volunteer diver with Angels Recovery Dive Team who located Oliver, and his crew for helping in the search. Officials with Trinity COSAR said in a previous news release that the terrain was 'extremely challenging' to search, including portions that were 'steep, rocky and in some areas impassable.' Heredia said in a Facebook video that the car was 'pushed by the current' several hundred feet downriver from where it entered the water. Also in the video, Heredia showed the tire tracks left behind by the Lexus as it veered into the river, and said he found the back rear window of the vehicle had been broken. Several agencies assisted with the search for Oliver, including Trinity County Search and Rescue (Trinity COSAR), the Shasta County Sheriff Dive Team, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), California Highway Patrol (CHP), CalFire and the United States Coast Guard, according to the TCSO. The mother and father involved in the crash, from Shasta Lake, were transported to Trinity General Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, ABC affiliate KRCR-TV reported. Officials said neither drugs nor alcohol is believed to have factored into the crash, per KRCR-TV and The Sacramento Bee. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
