Hialeah man charged with first-degree murder after fatal shooting caught on doorbell camera

A Hialeah man is facing a first-degree murder charge after a deadly shooting that was captured on his own doorbell camera, according to authorities. The newly released video, made public by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, shows the moments leading up to the May 13 shooting that left a 31-year-old man dead and 55-year-old Pedro Blanco in jail. Ring camera footage from outside apartment 201 shows Blanco walking directly to his neighbor's door. He appears to say something before pulling out a gun and firing a single shot. That one bullet killed Yoendris Campos, a father who, according to his family, was only visiting a friend inside apartment 202. Hialeah Police say the incident began with a dispute between neighbors. Blanco remains in custody and is charged with first-degree murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 4. CBS News Miami reached out to the public defender's office for comment but has not yet received a response.

Mets select UCF shortstop Antonio Jimenez in third round of 2025 MLB Draft

The Mets selected Central Florida shortstop Antonio Jimenez with the 102nd overall pick (Round 3) in the 2025 MLB Draft. Jimenez, 21, played 55 games last season for UCF after transferring from Miami. The 6-foot-1 infielder had 14 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, and 51 RBI while slashing .329/.407/.575 with a .982 OPS in 207 at-bats. He was struck out 46 times to 25 walks and added 11 steals on 14 attempts. Advertisement In his lone season with the Knights, the right-handed swinging shortstop had 18 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI games while posting a 24-game on-base streak and a 12-game hitting streak. Jiminez was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. The Hialeah native began his college career with the Hurricanes in 2024, appearing in 45 games, but struggled at the plate. He had just 18 hits in 99 at-bats (.182) with seven doubles and two home runs for a .313 slugging percentage and .613 OPS. The No. 102 selection carries a slot value of $752,000. The Mets did not pick between the Competitive Balance Round A and late in the third round due to signing Juan Soto, who was a free agent who received a qualifying offer. (The signing also meant New York forfeited their second-and fifth-highest selections and $1 million from their 2026 international bonus pool.) Earlier on Sunday, the Mets took another infielder in Michigan second baseman Mitch Voit with their first pick of the draft at No. 38 overall.

Miss Universe Cuba pageant to be held in Hialeah — and you can go for free

The Miss Universe Cuba 2025 pageant will be held on July 8 at Milander Park in Hialeah in a grand ceremony where a new queen will be chosen to represent Cubans at Miss Universe. Marianela Ancheta, Miss Universe Cuba 2024, will present the crown to the young woman chosen among the 17 candidates to participate in the international pageant on Nov. 21 in Thailand. Miss Universe Cuba will be broadcast from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mega TV and on the Miss Universe Cuba YouTube channel, where the public can peruse videos about each of the candidates. Free tickets are available for anyone who wants to attend, as well as paid tickets for the VIP area. Venezuelan designer Prince Julio César, director of Miss Universe Cuba, announced that it will be 'a quality show with impeccable production in which the candidates and our outgoing queen are the stars.' The host will be Puerto Rican TV presenter Carlos Adyan, part of the 'En Casa con Telemundo' team, who recently hosted the Miss Peru 2025 contest for the second consecutive year, in which Marianela Ancheta served as a member of the jury. Miss Universe Cuba 2025 will also be the queen of the city of Hialeah, César said, indicating that the winner will participate in the events celebrating the city's centennial. This year, several Miss Universe contestants will be chosen in Miami. Miss Nicaragua's pageant takes place in Miami, as does Miss Universe Latina, a reality show on Telemundo in which a young woman of Latin origin from the United States will be chosen to participate in Thailand. The process of selecting the Miss Universe Cuba contestants began in January, and has been more 'relaxed,' said César, because they had more time. Last year's pageant came together in only a few months because César was awarded the rights to run Miss Universe Cuba in late April of 2024. 'There's no less pressure, because the day I stop feeling the pressure, I stop feeling the commitment,' said César. Among this year's 17 candidates, who each represent the region of Cuba where they were born or to which they have ties, is Lina Luaces, a 21-year-old model born in Miami who is the daughter of Univision presenter Lili Estefan. Lina represents Santiago de Cuba, the place where her uncle, Emilio Estefan, was born, and where the first Miss Cuba, Gladys López, who represented the country at Miss Universe in 1952, was from. 'I understood that with love, discipline, responsibility, and above all, resilience, you begin to achieve your goals. I understood that exercise and training have to be part of my life,' Lina said on her Instagram profile about the preparation for becoming a queen. She changed her hair color and learned to appreciate the importance of makeup, although she confessed she's never been one to wear a lot of makeup. Mia Donadio Cancio, who represents the Isle of Youth, is a Florida International University (FIU) graduate with a degree in International Relations who, from the outset, expressed her desire to speak out against the situation Cubans face on the island. 'I don't want to be the most beautiful woman in the world, but the one who says it the loudest: I want to tell you what's happening in Cuba,' she wrote on her Instagram profile when she learned she was selected for Miss Universe Cuba. Donadio was among those who received the most votes from the public for her presentation video, along with Lianet Aguilera Sarmiento (Holguín); Lina Luaces; Deneb Morales (Villa Clara) and Sheila Laza (Central Region). Laza acknowledged that the biggest challenge for her in preparing was having to lose more than 20 pounds, and to do so she stopped eating carbohydrates completely, and as a Caribbean woman, she missed rice a lot, she said. With experience in beauty pageants in Houston, where she settled with her family upon arriving from Cuba at age 13, Laza feels very comfortable on the catwalk and speaking in front of crowds. 'My mission is to amplify the voices of a Cuban people who have been silenced for years by the doctrines of a dictatorship,' she said. 'Many young people like me have their wings clipped; they can't dream,' she said. Laza, who competed in Nuestra Belleza Latina in 2018, when Venezuelan Migbelis Castellanos won, wants to use her platform to bring attention to environmental issues, particularly reforestation. 'I would like to be an example of success and inspiration for young Cuban women and show that beauty, intelligence, talent, and determination can open many doors,' Laza said. The rest of the contestants are Romy Caridad Alvarez (Camagüey); Ariday Villar (Ciego de Avila); Emely Artabe (Cienfuegos); Katy Nuñez Diaz (Granma); Mary Rodriguez (Guantanamo); Indiana Williams (Havana); Claudia Fernandez Acebo (Matanzas); Anabella Urquiola (Mayabeque); Lisbeth Fernandez (Pinar del Rio); Glenda Verdecia (Western Region); Vanessa Villareal (Eastern Region) and Stefany Parli (Sancti Spiritus). As her reign as Miss Universe Cuba comes to a close, Ancheta reflected on the past year. 'We've tried to be involved in everything, to spread the word about Cuba everywhere,' Ancheta told el Nuevo Herald. 'I feel that one of the most important things about all this is that Cuban girls and women are seeing this new dream, this new life that Cuban women can have.' 'This is one of the years in which I have grown the most in my entire life. It was full of learning, and I have met wonderful people,' Ancheta said of her reign. Miss Universe Cuba 2024 modeled for designer Giannina Azar during Miami Fashion Week in November, and participated in the video for 'La guagua,' from Gente de Zona's new album about the most popular musical genre on the island, el reparto. Ancheta notes that her life has changed, and now she doesn't feel comfortable going out without looking her best. At the same time, she's happy to chat with people on the street and is always up for a photo, even if they catch her in the middle of a dinner party. When she says goodbye to the crown, she plans to work toward her dream of working in television. She's also continuing to develop her skincare line, Arma Face Skincare, and wants to connect models and influencers with renowned brands through her own fashion and beauty-related advertising project. General admission to Miss Universe Cuba is free, but VIP tickets can be purchased at and a raffle is available for two tickets on the Miss Universe Cuba Instagram profile.

County Commissioner René Garcia withdraws from Hialeah mayor race. Who else is running?

Miami-Dade County Commissioner René García has formally withdrawn from the Hialeah mayoral race. The move by Garcia, the Miami-Dade District 13 commissioner, confirms what many in political circles had suspected for months. Garcia, whose district includes parts of Hialeah Gardens, Hialeah, Miami Lakes and unincorporated areas of northwest Miami-Dade, filed to run for Hialeah mayor on March 31. But from the start, his remarks cast doubt on whether he truly intended to compete. When asked by the Miami Herald on April 2 about his candidacy, Garcia said he had months to decide whether to resign his county seat to pursue the mayoral post, since Florida's 'resign-to-run' law gives candidates until the city's qualifying window. 'It gives me the chance to talk to the residents of Hialeah and see where I can best serve our community,' he said at the time. On Thursday, Garcia confirmed he would stay on the county commission. 'As Miami-Dade County faces a difficult budget year, now is not the time to step away,' Garcia said in a statement. 'Public service is not about chasing titles; it's about answering the call to serve where you are most needed. I believe I can best serve the people of Hialeah and District 13 by continuing to fight for them on the County Commission.' While many saw Garcia as a natural contender for Hialeah mayor — and he was publicly endorsed by former Mayor Esteban 'Steve' Bovo as the strongest candidate, the race for the city's top seat if far from over. At least six candidates are currently in the running, including Councilman Jesus Tundidor, who resigned his seat Thursday to become effective the day the new mayor is sworn in, and former Councilman Bryan Calvo, who has publicly sparred with Bovo both on the dais and in court over issues like delayed emergency response times and public safety. With one day remaining before the deadline for elected officials to resign in order to qualify for the race, it remains unclear whether Interim Mayor Jacqueline Garcia-Roves — the first woman to serve as mayor of Hialeah — will enter the race or continue in the role until a new mayor is elected. Garcia-Roves, who was re-elected unopposed to the city council in 2023, held a fundraiser last week that brought in over $80,000, a strong signal she may be preparing to launch a campaign. Amid the uncertainty, if Garcia-Roves enters the race it remains unclear whom Garcia will endorse: his protégé Tundidor, who served as his senior legislative aide in the state Senate, or Garcia-Roves, who is aligned with former Mayor Carlos Hernández and whose political career began with Hernández's support in 2019. Hialeah is facing one of its most competitive election cycles in recent memory. Five City Council seats are up for election, including two special elections, one of them for Garcia-Roves' council seat, which remains vacant after the council failed to appoint a temporary replacement, while she serves as acting mayor.

Large police investigation at UPS facility in Hialeah

One person was taken to the hospital as a large police investigation unfolds at warehouse complex in Hialeah. The investigation is centered at a UPS facility at LeJeune Road and E 56 Street, which happens to be next to a police station. A friend of someone who works at the UPS facility said he got a text around 3:30 a.m. saying he was in danger, and about to be "jumped." "He tells me before something happens to me, come here, something is about to happen, I'm about to get jumped. That's what he said. So, I came," the friend, who did not wish to be identified, said. He said his friend was working alone. "He probably saw it coming. He was working by himself. He probably saw a bunch of people trying to jump him and he probably stood his ground. Anybody would have stood their ground," he said. Hialeah police have not released details at this time on the nature of their investigation. Two people were being detained. The Hialeah Fire Department said one person who was injured in the incident was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center. UPS released a statement which said, "We're aware of a situation outside of our Hialeah facility. As this is an active police investigation, we'll refer you to the authorities for additional questions. However, UPS operations are not affected." This is a developing story, check back for updates.
