New grading policy for matric, inter deferred
No complaints were received on the first day of the Board Secondary Education Karachi annual examinations 2016, where 100 per cent of the students scheduled to sit for the exams attended. PHOTO: ONLINE The implementation of the new grading policy at the matriculation and intermediate levels across Sindh and the rest of Pakistan has been postponed for one year. As a result, the recently concluded 2025 annual examinations for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and High School Certificate (HSC) will follow the old grading system. The Sindh Universities and Boards Dept has issued a notification referencing its earlier notification dated October 15, 2024, and the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen notification dated June 18, 2025. The new policy will now be enforced from 2026. Per the earlier policy, passing marks in all subjects were to be increased from 33% to 40% starting 2025. Results were to be issued through Grade Point (GP) and later via Grade Point Average (GPA). Under the new grading scale, an A++ grade will represent 95-100% marks and be termed Exceptional with a GPA of 5.0. An A+ (90-94%) will be Outstanding, A (85-89%) Excellent, B++ (80-84%) Very Good, and B+ (75-79%) Good. Grades B, C, D, and E will be labeled Fairly Good, Above Average, Average, and Below Average respectively. Students scoring below 40% will be considered as having failed, but the term used will be Unsatisfactory instead of Fail.

Koraput schools receive flak from officer for poor academic performance
Koraput: Director of secondary education Birendra Korkora on Monday pulled up govt high schools in Koraput district for their poor academic performance and lack of accountability during a surprise inspection. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During his one-day visit, Korkora inspected multiple schools and expressed serious concerns over absenteeism among students and teachers, as well as dismal academic results in the recent Class X board examinations. At Patraput Government High School under Jeypore block, the director found that nearly 50 per cent of the 235 enrolled students were absent. He also discovered that a teacher was on unauthorised leave. "One day's salary of the teacher has been withheld and a show-cause notice has been issued," said Korkora to TOI. Highlighting the declining academic performance, he noted that only 12 students from the entire district, including eight from Saraswati Vidya Mandir, secured A1 grades in the High School Certificate (HSC) examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha. At Patraput High School, out of 23 Class X students, only eight could read basic English. This reflects the dire state of education in the region, he remarked, adding that strong warnings have been issued to the teachers and the District Education Officer (DEO) to improve board exam results and ensure better academic focus. Korkora also visited Chandrapada High School under Boipariguda block, where all students had passed the HSC exam with either D or E grades. Eighteen students passed with E grade, which is extremely concerning, he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Despite adequate infrastructure such as computers, a library, and a laboratory, the schools have failed to deliver results. The director blamed weak monitoring and instructed district education officials to conduct regular visits and reviews. "There is a clear lack of supervision. Officials must ensure academic activities are not neglected," he said. Sources in the department confirmed that the condition of most high schools across the district is similarly worrisome, prompting a need for urgent intervention.

Pre-exam coaching ‘improves' matric marks of tribal students
1 2 3 Berhampur: Over 1,000 tribal students in Kandhamal district improved their performance in the High School Certificate (HSC) examination this year, scoring above 50% compared to the previous year. The progress was made through the district administration's initiative, Prayash Plus, a special two-month coaching programme introduced before the matric exams, officials said. Kandhamal collector Amrit Ruturaj initiated the programme with the objective of achieving higher scores rather than just passing the exam. Following a screening test, 1,026 students were selected for coaching. "Twelve hubs were set up, one in each block. Students were provided with free lodging and food in each hub, while expert teachers were engaged for two months of coaching before the exam," said Rabindra Mishra, district welfare officer (DWO). Of the 27 students coached to achieve A2 grades (above 80%), 13 succeeded. Similarly, 128 and 546 students achieved B1 (70–79%) and B2 (60–69%) grades, surpassing targets of 87 and 249 students, respectively. Moreover, 991 students secured C grade (50–59%) compared to the target of 663. Out of 2,597 students from ST and SC residential schools who appeared for the exam, 2,562 passed — registering a pass rate of 98.65%, nearly the same as last year's 99%. However, significantly more students scored higher grades this year. "In 2024, only 4 students got an A2 grade, while 59 achieved B1, 388 got B2, and 952 secured C," said Mishra.
