STB CF finances Modella's purchase of WH Smith's UK high street business
Secure Trust Bank Commercial Finance (STB CF) has extended a £50m asset-based lending facility for Modella Capital's acquisition of WH Smith's UK High Street operations. The funds will support the business's working capital needs as it embarks on a new strategic phase under Modella Capital, which includes rebranding its 464 high street stores as 'TG Jones'. Founded in 1792, WH Smith will continue operating its travel shops in railway stations, airports, and hospitals, as well as its international businesses, under its existing brand. The newly branded TG Jones high street operation aims to refine its retail offering, improve efficiency, and seek growth opportunities with support from Modella Capital and its financial partners. This deal reflects increased retail merger and acquisition activity for STB CF, which previously aided Modella Capital in acquiring Hobbycraft. In January 2024, the bank also provided financing to Ann Summers for its online growth. STB CF's focus on private equity partnerships is evident, with ten deals completed across eight sponsors last year, compared to six the year before. STB CF regional sales director Tony Young said: 'Having worked with Modella Capital previously, we're proud to once again support the team on this high-profile transaction. 'This deal demonstrates the strength of asset-based lending in enabling strategic private equity acquisitions and providing ongoing operational support, and it's great to continue adding to our portfolio of retail deals. 'We look forward to continuing our partnership with Modella Capital and the management team as they continue to drive the business forward under the TG Jones brand.' Horror on High Street as half of independent stores mull closure: Retail chiefs sound alarm over yet more painful tax rises
Retail chiefs sounded the alarm over rising taxes as it emerged more than half of independent shopkeepers have considered closing this year. As official figures showed unemployment has soared to a four-year high, the boss of Sports Direct and House of Fraser owner Frasers warned of 'dark clouds' on the horizon due to the looming Budget. And Ocado founder and chief executive Tim Steiner called for 'lower taxes and less regulation' to boost growth. The comments came as an industry survey found over 50 per cent of independent retailers have thought about shutting up shop this year. And 84 per cent said they lack confidence in the Government to help. Frasers finance chief Chris Wootton said there were 'dark clouds' over the next Budget. The company, which also owns Flannels, Evans Cycles and Gieves & Hawkes, said last year's Budget hit consumer confidence after it imposed higher National Insurance contributions and a hike in the minimum wage. And Labour has promised to 'level the playing field between the High Street and online giants' by replacing the business rates system. Ocado boss Steiner said: 'I think that all businesses and, in fact, all people in the UK should want to see lower taxes and less regulation, because that's what will create growth.' A survey by website Save The High Street found that more than half of independent shopkeepers have thought about shutting their business this year. Jeff Banks, designer and founder of fashion chain Warehouse, said businesses of all sizes are laying off staff. He added: 'Taxation is being used as a blunt instrument, driving small businesses out of existence rather than encouraging entrepreneurship and growth.' There has already been a wave of devastating shop closures and job cuts. Household names including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons have axed staff, citing the pressure of higher costs. At least one in ten retail workers could leave the sector before 2028, amounting to 300,000 staff, claims the Retail Jobs Alliance, which represents big names such as Tesco and M&S. But it is feared the reality could be even worse, as this estimate does not even include the impact of last year's Budget, let alone any further hikes this autumn. By Hugo Duncan The hospitality industry has lost a 'devastating' 84,000 jobs since Rachel Reeves imposed higher taxes at last year's Budget. Restaurants, pubs, cafes and hotels have been hammered by increases in national insurance and the minimum wage. And fears of further job cuts are mounting as firms struggle to stay afloat. Kate Nicholls of the UK Hospitality trade group, said: 'These devastating job losses are a direct consequence of policy decisions at last year's Budget.'

Club where Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie played commemorated by book
A book to celebrate the 60th anniversary of a club that brought music legends to Cheltenham is being Gone To The Moon was written by Richard Goddard, Dave Jackson, Chris Stanbury and Mike Williams, who are former members of the Blue Moon Club. The High Street venue attracted music fans from all over the country, as well as from the US. Jimi Hendrix, Sir Elton John and David Bowie, who were all relatively unknown at the time, were just some of the artists who performed during the two-year period the venue was open for. Mr Williams said "it was that buzz of being among people that were all likeminded" that made the club so special. Former members still reunite a few times every year to dance and listen to music from the Williams was there on the opening night, which was headlined by the Bo Street Runners, a London R&B band."Their claim to fame was Mick Fleetwood was their drummer," he said."He went on to play for Fleetwood Mac of course, but we never saw or heard from them again." One of the most famous nights in the Blue Moon's two years came in February 1967, when Jimi Hendrix Goddard jumped the queue, which trailed back to The Promenade."I went along having heard him on the radio, he was up-and-coming," he said."We got in but it was absolutely rammed. The capacity was about 350 or 360 but there was over 700 in there." The Blue Moon Club closed in May 1967 after the owners decided to change than 500 members of the club came forward to contribute to the book."The publisher basically said 'Stop', we were putting too much into it and he's prompted us with a few ways we could go forward, something like a second edition," Mr Goddard said."A lot of people have put a lot of effort into giving us this information."
