On Thursday, a federal jury convicted five members of the Highs gang on various charges. The gang operates north of West Broadway Avenue in North Minneapolis. As members of the gang, the defendants were expected to retaliate against the rival Lows gang, which operates south of West Broadway Avenue, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Taylor was convicted of conspiring to distribute controlled substances and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. 'The Highs have long terrorized north Minneapolis, bringing drugs, violence, and murder into our community,' Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson said in a statement. 'This verdict represents yet another step in our fight against gang violence. I want to thank the coalition of federal, state, and local law enforcement partners who joined together to investigate and prosecute this violent criminal street gang. I also want to thank the Justice Department's Violent Crime & Racketeering Section for lending their expertise and partnering with the U.S. Attorney's Office on our RICO cases.' The trial was the second of back-to-back trials involving members of the Highs gang. The third trial will begin Monday. In total, more than 40 defendants are charged in the case. We have chosen one cafe and one brewery where the event will be held,' Bindu B.S., Bengaluru Coordinator for Pint of Science India 2025 said. She added that in order to accommodate attendees below the age of 18 years one of the venues chosen is a cafe and another one is a brewery where the participants above 21 years can take part. 'The name of the event is Pint of Science and as the title suggests it is to encourage people to engage with science in a causal setting. The speakers would engage them in a non-traditional way using memes, GIFs, making use of their models in a fun and casual way,' she added. 'This unique event provides a wonderful opportunity to put young Indian scientists on the world map by showcasing their cutting-edge research in multidisciplinary domains. It will also help to make science more fun and attractive to young doctoral and postdoctoral students by helping them engage with a general audience,' said Debarati Chatterjee, associate professor, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA, Pune) and Director, Pint of Science India.

Alleged Minneapolis gang member found guilty of several federal firearm charges
A jury on Wednesday found an alleged Minneapolis gang member guilty of multiple federal firearm charges. Clenest Wells Jr. was found guilty of three counts of possessing a firearm as a felon and one count of unlawful possession of a machine gun. Wells was one of 14 alleged gang members charged in an August 2023 crackdown that was a collaboration between local and federal authorities. At least four of the 14 charged have been sentenced in the crackdown. Authorities say the charges included members of the Lows, Highs, Bloods and 10z/20z gangs. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said the arrests were part of an overall effort ot reduce gun violence in the city. "We will not allow a small group of violent gang members to continue to terrorize our neighbors," he said when charges were announced. That was the second significant move against Minneapolis gangs in 2023. In May that year, authorities announced Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act charges against 45 alleged gang members. Wells' sentencing hearing has not been scheduled yet.
