'Hunting Wives' showrunner defends raunchy hit as viewers go bonkers: 'Unapologetic'
Happy wife, happy life. 'The Hunting Wives' is now streaming on Netflix, and the steamy murder mystery is causing viewers on TikTok to proclaim, 'This show is INSANE!' 'I just started watching Hunting Wives, and all I can tell you is, do not have any children in the room,' another TikTok video declared. Advertisement 'It's so fun, and juicy and sexy. Everyone is behaving so badly,' showrunner Rebecca Cutter exclusively told The Post. 'I wanted to do an exploration of women behaving badly, unapologetic sexual conquest running rampant, and just something fun.' 8 Rebecca Cutter at the 'Hightown' panel on February 9, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. Netflix Advertisement Based on a 2021 novel of the same name, 'The Hunting Wives' follows Sophie (Brittany Snow), a Massachusetts woman who relocates to Texas thanks to her husband's job. Soon, she becomes entangled in the web of her new friend Margo Banks (Malin Akerman), the Queen Bee leader of the local community. Margo presides over a clique of moms and socialites who like shooting guns and dancing with men half their age. She also has affairs with men and women alike. The show is filled with steamy scenes, including some sparks flying between Margo and Sophie. 8 Sophie (Brittany Snow) and Margo (Malin Akerman) share a kiss on 'The Hunting Wives.' Netflix Notably, Margo, who drops trou the most on the show, isn't a twenty-something – Akerman is 47. 'It was important to find an actress, not necessarily that was willing to do nudity per se, but that really felt comfortable with the sexuality and owning that power that she has,' Cutter explained. 'The first actress that we looked for was the Margo Banks character, because it felt like if we didn't nail that, then the whole thing falls apart.' Advertisement Cutter said that the '27 Dresses' actress was a fit, because, 'Obviously Sophie gets sucked into that. So that was really important to find an actress that really believed in herself that she was that sexually powerful….Malin brought that.' 8 Malin Akerman and Dermot Mulroney on 'The Hunting Wives.' Netflix 8 Brittany Snow and Malin Akerman on 'The Hunting Wives.' Netflix 'The Hunting Wives' falls into the subgenre of shows where moms and wives behave badly – other shows in that category include 'Good Girls,' 'Big Little Lies' and 'Desperate Housewives.' 'I think there's a fantasy of freedom or power that maybe we don't feel so much as middle-aged women,' Cutter told The Post. 'I just think TV has evolved. The first anti-heroes were all men,' she explained. 'Now, there can be more female anti-heroes and I certainly think Margot Banks falls into that category.' Many of Margo's sex scenes are with Brad (George Farrier), the inappropriately young son of one of her friends. Regarding showing steamy scenes between older women and younger men, Cutter said, 'It's rare. I also think it's real. I have single friends [who are] women of a certain age…young men always are interested in them….that is a very real thing. And so, I think that that's cool to show.' Netflix The show also dives into some Red State / Blue State culture clash territory, as Sophie is an East Coast liberal and Margo's husband, Jed (Dermot Mulroney), throws fundraisers for the NRA. 'I thought, let's just dive into the fish, out of water or why not?' Cutter said. Advertisement 'I wanted to be honest about the culture…you start to see like, 'oh, okay, both sides behave badly.' No one side has a lock on like morality or immorality.' Cutter explained that she doesn't see politics as 'mattering to the story that much,' but, 'really it was just to serve the fish out of water element of it. Sophie feels an outsider, and Margo's her way in.'

Netflix just added this gritty crime drama you (probably) haven't seen — and it's already crashed the top 10
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Netflix is giving a Starz crime drama a second shot at finding its audience after it was removed from the streaming service mere weeks after the show ended. As of July 23, all three seasons of Rebecca Cutter's gritty crime series "Hightown" are now available to watch on the streamer in the US. The series originally aired on Starz and ran for 25 episodes, spread across three seasons between 2020 and 2024. The finale aired on March 8, 2024... and Starz promptly removed it at the end of that same month. I was confident the show would get a bit of a boost once it landed on Netflix, and it looks like I was right. As of our latest update, "Hightown," the show's jumped right into the Netflix Top 10 list. It's currently sitting in 5th place, behind new arrivals like "The Hunting Wives" and Netflix's latest hit original, "Untamed." How's that for finding new fans? If you'd spotted the new crime drama and were trying to decide whether to stream "Hightown" on Netflix yourself, you can find more info about the streamer's new arrival below. What is 'Hightown' about? "Hightown" is a crime drama set in Provincetown, Massachusetts. There, we meet Jackie Quiñones (Monica Raymund), a hard-partying National Marine Fisheries Service Agent struggling with addiction. When she discovers the body of a murdered woman, Jackie's life is upended and she attempts to start working towards sobriety... but grows convinced it's down to her to solve the murder. At odds with Sergeant Ray Abruzzo (James Badge Dale), one of the men investigating organized crime in the region, and the local opioid epidemic. In addition to Raymund and Dale, the series also stars Riley Voelkel, Shane Harper. Atkins Estimond, Amaury Nolasco, and Dohn Norwood, among others. Should you stream 'Hightown' on Netflix? "Hightown" seems well-suited to become a Netflix hit. Crime dramas usually play well on the streamer (soapy family crime drama "The Waterfront" is a recent successful example), and it comes reasonably well-recommended. At the time of writing, the show's first season holds an 80% approval rating on the review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, indicating generally favorable reactions (other seasons do not have a score, at present), and the site's consensus reads: "Monica Raymund's charms rise above any formulaic tendencies in "Hightown's" highly entertaining first season." Reviewing the first season for The Hollywood Reporter, Inkoo Kang called the show "competently crafted, if not particularly memorable," adding: ""Hightown" doesn't ever reach full beach-noir status, but it does grow organically darker and more heartbreaking as the season progresses." Matt Fagerholm, meanwhile, said: "what prevents 'Hightown' from devolving into a drag is the enormous appeal of its leading lady, Raymund, who doesn't shy away from flashing smiles of exhilaration when she finds herself capable of being the hero after all." The Guardian's Lucy Mangan gave the show a 3-star rating, calling it a "slick but sombre" affair, describing the series as having " a solid, formulaic base" but succeeding because it "has such a gift in Raymund as Quiñones", adding: ""Hightown" itself probably won't win any awards – although it does undoubtedly deserve the particular praise reserved for all things that are better than they need to be - but she [Quiñones] should." Some of the audience reactions on the platform are pretty positive, too; I'm seeing plenty of top ratings and praise for both the performances and the writing (though others weren't so taken with the show or some of its content). On balance, though, if you were looking for a new crime drama to occupy your time, then "Hightown" sounds like it could be worth adding to your Netflix watchlist. ‘The Hunting Wives' Is Soapy, Sultry Fun
'The Hunting Wives,' the first season of which is now on Netflix, is ideal summer TV. This lustful, proudly silly drama is just the kind of thing you can be seduced by on a hot day when all you want to do is sit inside and binge. Based on the novel by May Cobb and adapted by Rebecca Cutter ('Hightown'), 'The Hunting Wives' stars Brittany Snow as Sophie, a recent transplant to small-town Texas from Cambridge, Mass. Sophie once had a career in political public relations, but now her main job is to be the wife of Graham (Evan Jonigkeit), a stick-in-the-mud architect, who is working for the local oil baron, Jed Banks (Dermot Mulroney). Jed, meanwhile, has G.O.P. aspirations. Sophie is skeptical of her new home — it doesn't help when she attends a party at Jed's house only to discover that it's an N.R.A. benefit. But she is immediately intrigued by Margo (Malin Akerman), Jed's flirtatious wife. Just how flirtatious? Well, within minutes of meeting Sophie in a bathroom, Margo is topless. ('Hunting Wives' is audaciously not safe for work.) Sophie is soon recruited to join Margo's coterie of pals. Their activities involve drinking margaritas, shooting guns and a lot of secret Sapphic action. The tawdry fun works largely because of Akerman, who seems to be having an absolute ball purring in a twangy accent and making bedroom eyes at everyone in her vicinity. Sophie develops a friend-crush that turns into a crush-crush as Margo unleashes the dormant party girl who went sober after a drunk-driving accident. In a modern drama cliché, 'The Hunting Wives' does open with a shot of a bloodied young woman running through the woods, hinting at the murder mystery that will ultimately unfold. When it does, the show kicks into an even more absurd gear with revelations galore, some of them almost delightfully predictable. It's worth keeping in mind: All these people are gun owners. 'The Hunting Wives' sets up a kind of red state-blue state conflict, but the plot is largely the stuff of soapy fantasy. There's nothing new in the idea that beneath all the Bible-thumping and purity rhetoric, there might be a whole lot of dirty stuff going on in rural America. Still, Akerman's performance makes the case that hypocrisy can be liberating. Like Snow's wide-eyed Sophie, you'll have trouble resisting her charms.
