Hefty sentence for Mpumalanga man who killed girlfriend in front of their children
Hefty sentence for Mpumalanga man who killed girlfriend in front of their children The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his girlfriend. According to Highvelder, the crime, fuelled by accusations of cheating, unfolded in the presence of their two minor children, aged three and six. The man, who lived with his girlfriend and their children in eMvelo (previously Amsterdam), pleaded guilty and was convicted of premeditated murder. The incident occurred on June 6, 2024. The court heard that they were at home when the girlfriend received a phone call from an unknown person. After the call, he questioned her about the caller. Unsatisfied with her response and suspecting an affair, an argument broke out and escalated into violence. He then fatally stabbed her in the neck with a knife. The victim died instantly, and the accused was arrested two days later. 'In aggravation of the sentence, state Adv Kedibone Mthimkhulu argued that the accused's plea was a mitigating factor, emphasising the brutality of slitting the throat of the deceased as inhumane,' says NPA provincial spokesperson Monica Nyuswa. The court was presented with a post-mortem report confirming the woman died from an anterior neck wound and a photo album showing the grim crime scene. Mthimkhulu also submitted a victim impact statement compiled by the deceased's daughter describing the financial, psychological and emotional trauma she has suffered since her mother's death. SCROLLBACK SATURDAY: 'You cannot park there sir' — Highvelder, 1975 edition
#ScrollbackSaturday: Long before TikTok trends gave us the viral phrase 'You cannot park there!', Ermelo had its own parking fail that made local headlines. This gem comes straight from the Highvelder archives of 1975 and features a certain Mr W.A. Kleynhans and a gravity-defying car flip that would have gone viral today. The original 'You cannot park there' moment During one night in 1975, Mr Kleynhans of Smuts Street somehow managed to park his car, upside down, in a ditch near the old Paratus Centre. According to the newspaper article, the car landed on its roof without sustaining any serious damage. An impressive feat… if that was the goal. 'Dit wil gedoen wees' The report humorously noted that passersby were puzzled by the vehicle's position and even quipped, 'Dit wil gedoen wees.' (Translation: 'That takes some doing.') TikTok would've loved this Fast forward to 2025, and this moment would've probably been an instant hit on TikTok if someone had captured and captioned it with the now-popular 'You cannot park there!' audio. It just proves that viral-worthy moments existed long before the internet, they were just recorded in newsprint instead of on smartphones. A nod to local history Moments like this give us a humorous but heartfelt glimpse into our town's past. Not every archive entry is about politics or tragedy, some are just about a man, a ditch, and a very unfortunate parking job. Have your own memories or photos from Ermelo's past? NPA welcomes sentencing of Mpumalanga rapist who demanded child bride
The NPA has welcomed a life imprisonment sentence handed down by the eLukwatini Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Monday, to a man convicted of raping of a 13-year-old girl. According to Highvelder, the crime occurred repeatedly in Mayflower between April and October 2019. In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered his inclusion on the National Register for Sex Offenders, declared him unfit to possess a firearm, and deemed him unsuitable to work with children. The victim, then 13, resided with her grandparents in the same yard as her attacker. Court proceedings revealed that the girl was repeatedly targeted. 'On one occasion, he entered her bedroom armed with a sjambok, demanding she become his second wife and bear his children. When she refused, he assaulted her with the sjambok before raping her,' says NPA regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa. The abuse came to light when the victim's school noticed her absence from classes and dispatched social workers to her home. During their visit, the victim disclosed the rape, prompting a police investigation that led to an arrest. He pleaded not guilty, claiming the victim seduced him. Possible lion sighting near Ermelo sparks concern among residents
Possible lion sighting near Ermelo sparks concern among residents Unconfirmed reports of a lion spotted in the Ermelo area in Mpumalanga have raised alarm among local farmers and residents. The sighting is quite unusual, as lions are not typically found in this region. According to a voice note Highvelder received, allegedly from local farmers in the Davel and Ermelo area, tracks believed to belong to a lion were found in the direction of Ermelo, originating from the Tafelkop area. The tracks were reportedly discovered shortly after recent rainfall, which made them easier to spot in the terrain. The voice note says that Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism Agency (MPTA) officials from Nelspruit have been dispatched to investigate the situation. Residents and farmers are asked to remain vigilant and report any further signs or sightings to local law enforcement or conservation authorities. Simphiwe Shungube, spokesperson for the MTPA, stated that in response to the lion sighting reports, a team equipped with tracking dogs has been sent to the area. 'The team will investigate the tracks and trace them,' he explained. Shungube also urged the public to report any sightings of the lion immediately to Louw Steyn at 083 626 6792.
