How slain MS deputy Martin Shields' colleagues will honor him and help Jackson-area grads
Mississippi law enforcement agencies and first responders are taking the court for a cause on Saturday, July 12, for the "Battle of the Badges Basketball Tournament." The basketball event is presented by the Deputy Martin L. Shields Jr. Memorial Foundation in honor of fallen Hinds County Deputy Martin Luther Shields Jr., 37, who was fatally shot on the evening of Feb. 23 while responding to a domestic dispute call at a home on Midway Road in Terry. Born on July 14, 1987, Shields dedicated his life to serving his community and protecting his fellow citizens. This was evident in the hundreds of people who showed up at Shields' celebration of life service to pay their respects, including Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves. Teams scheduled to participate in the event include the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, Jackson Fire Department, Jackson Police Department, Ridgeland Police Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol. Homicides continue to drop in Jackson: Jackson sees 40% reduction in homicides in first half of 2025 compared to last year. Who are the victims? Capitol police investigate double homicide that left two women dead in Jackson
Capitol police are investigating a double homicide that left two women dead in Jackson on Sunday, July 6 — a couple of days after two other people were killed in a shooting in the city. Mississippi Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Bailey Martin said officers responded to a shooting at approximately 3:19 a.m. Sunday on Wilmington Street near University Boulevard. Martin said when officers arrived at the scene, they found two individuals "suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and were pronounced deceased on the scene." Hinds County interim coroner Jeramiah Howard said Telisa Holder, 34, and Racquel Freeman, 32, were the victims killed in the shooting. The Clarion Ledger reached out to Martin on Monday, July 7, for an update on suspect information but was told no further comment would be made in this open investigation. In less than a week, four people have been reportedly shot and killed in Jackson. In addition to Holder and Freeman's death, 23-year-old Gabriel King and 45-year-old Adrione Triggs died on July 4 in separate shootings in the city. Homicides decline over year in Jackson: Capital city of Mississippi saw a 40% reduction in homicides in the first half of 2025 compared to last year. Anti-abortion doctors ask Mississippi Supreme Court to overturn 1998 ruling
Lawyers for the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists have filed an appeal asking the state Supreme Court to overrule its 1998 decision and declare Mississippi's effective ban on abortion constitutional. In a 1998 ruling in Pro Choice Mississippi v. Fordice, the state high court said the state constitution provides Mississippians a right to abortion. Late last year, a Hinds County judge ruled members of AAPLOG did not have standing to pursue a lawsuit to overturn the 1998 decision because they have not been harmed by the court ruling. AAPLOG, represented by new public interest law firm American Dream Legal, is appealing that ruling, and asking the state Supreme Court to 'clarify whether Mississippi considers elective abortion a crime or a constitutional right,' according to a press release. Based on another Mississippi case, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the decades old Roe v. Wade right to abortion via the U.S. Constitution. The Mississippi Legislature has passed laws that prohibit most all abortions in the state and there are no clinics in Mississippi offering abortions. But the 1998 state Supreme Court decision holding that the state constitution provides a right to abortion has never been overturned and remains on the books. American Dream Legal in a statement said Mississippi's criminal ban on abortion conflicts with the Fordice decision, and this has AAPLOG physicians 'caught between conflicting legal duties: refer patients and risk prosecution under state law — or refuse to refer and risk professional ruin.' 'The people of Mississippi enacted a law that protected unborn life and took down the U.S. Supreme Court's abuse of judicial authority in Roe v. Wade,' said Aaron Rice, attorney for AAPLOG and CEO of American Dream Legal. 'It is only fitting that we likewise put an end to efforts by the courts in our own state to impose abortion by judicial fiat.' In the Hinds County case, both the state, through Attorney General Lynn Fitch, and pro-abortion rights supporters argued that the doctors did not have standing. It's unclear whether the high court will hear the appeal. Former college basketball player Cameron Woodall, 26, dies in Mississippi after ATV crash
Cameron Woodall, a former college basketball player and two-time Mississippi state champion in high school, has died after reportedly being involved in an ATV crash over the weekend. He was 26. Woodall was driving a 4-wheeler in Raymond, Mississippi, at around 11:30 p.m. local time when he lost control of the vehicle and overturned, interim Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard told WLBT. Another person driving a separate ATV was also involved in the incident. That person was reportedly taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation into the accident is ongoing, the Mississippi Clarion Ledger reported. A Mississippi native, Woodall was a standout on the basketball team at Raymond High School, where he won a state championship in 2017 and 2018. He went on to play college basketball at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Grambling State and most recently at Tougaloo College. "It is with profound sadness that we share the untimely passing of Cameron D. 'Big Cam' Woodall, a beloved former Tougaloo College men's basketball standout. Known for his larger-than-life presence, fierce competitiveness on the court, and kind-hearted spirit off it, Cam left an indelible mark on the Tougaloo family," the school's athletics page posted on Instagram. "His impact extended far beyond basketball; he was a friend, a brother, and a true Bulldog through and through. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him." Copiah-Lincoln also shared a post honoring Woodall on X. "The Co-Lin family extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and former teammates of former Co-Lin basketball player Cameron Woodall." Woodall earned second-team All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference honors in his two seasons at Tougaloo College.
