Lakhs of devotees turn up for 519th Nellaiappar car festival in TN
TIRUNELVELI: The 519th annual car procession of the Nellaiappar-Gandhimathi Ambal temple was held on Tuesday with lakhs of devotees taking turns in pulling Asia's third-largest wooden chariot around the four mada streets. As per tradition, members of the Scheduled Caste Devendra Kula Vellalar community from Thenpathu and Malaiyalamedu villages pushed the car using wooden poles to set the event rolling. Assembly Speaker M Appavu, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department Minister P K Sekar Babu, and MLA Abdul Wahab were among the first to pull the rope. Later, speaking to reporters, Sekar Babu said the festival was a symbol of religious harmony. 'A Christian - Speaker Appavu, a Muslim MLA Abdul Wahab, and a Hindu - myself, jointly pulled the temple chariot. It has been made possible in the government led by Chief Minister M K Stalin,' he said. According to the minister, all the temple chariots were either restored or newly built this year. A new chariot was built for Chandikeswarar at Rs 59 lakh. The other chariots were refurbished with wooden horses and Brahma idols at a cost of Rs 43 lakh. New ropes worth Rs 6.5 lakh were also purchased, he minister explained.

2,000 cops, medical teams ready for Kandadevi temple car festival
Sivaganga: More than 2,000 police personnel, three medical teams, three ambulances, and two fire engines will be deployed for the temple car festival of the Arulmigu Sornamoortheeswarar Temple in Kandadevi on Tuesday. The security plan was finalised at a preparatory meeting chaired by district collector K Porkodi on Monday, after which she inspected four streets around the temple. CCTV cameras will be mounted along the chariot's route, and three watchtowers are erected for real-time monitoring. A multi-department control room near the shrine will coordinate operations, while 42 village administrative officers and assistants will be positioned at potential flashpoints. To bolster crowd management, 15 special executive magistrates have been appointed. The Devakottai sub-collector has issued permission slips to devotees pulling the car and distributed passes to officials. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department has been told to ensure the ritual schedule follows Agama norms, and that basic amenities such as drinking water, toilets, and shade are ready. Workers from the rural development department repaired the chariot streets, cleaned the parking areas, and arranged lights. Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will run special buses for pilgrims.

Ministers review work for consecration of Tiruchendur Murugan temple

Sekar Babu told reporters that the 'Velvisalai' pujas would begin for the consecration ceremony at the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur from July 1 onwards. More than 10 lakh devotees are likely to take part in the consecration ceremony on July 7. "Apart from reviewing security arrangements, we inspected the progress of the 52 dormitories being established under the temple, temporary bus stands, vehicle parking spaces, and places for food preparation," he said. The minister further said that the number of devotees to be allowed on the first floor for viewing the consecration ceremony would be decided by July 2. HR&CE dept schools get an infrastructure boost as CM Stalin unveils new buildings
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday inaugurated additional classrooms, and other educational infrastructure built at a cost of Rs 13.94 crore, in two schools run by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department in Kilpauk and Choolaimedu. An official release said Stalin inaugurated a new multi-storey school building for Ekambaranathar Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Kilpauk, built at a cost of Rs 11.15 crore. He also launched the upgraded facilities at Anjugam Primary School, Choolaimedu, at a cost of Rs 2.79 crore. The CM also distributed Rs 10,000 as educational assistance to 252 students of Classes 10 to 12, provided schoolbags with educational materials to 1,131 students, and gave bicycles to 166 students. As a token of appreciation, 10 students each received financial aid and schoolbags, while 40 students received bicycles. He also visited classrooms and laboratories, interacted with students, and observed teaching and practical sessions. Temples under the HR&CE department are not only religious centres but also serve society by running schools, training centres, care homes, and health facilities. Currently, 25 schools and 10 colleges (including a polytechnic) run by temples impart education to 22,455 students. Over the past four years, Rs 138.13 crore has been spent on upgrading educational infrastructure in these institutions. HR and CE Minister PK Sekarbabu, heads of Dharmapuram Adheenam, Kundrakudi Adheenam, Mayilam Bommapuram Adheenam, Sri Embar Jeeyar Mutt of Sriperumbudur, Velakurichi Adheenam, Chenai Mayor R Priyar, MLAs, and senior officials were present on the occasion.

Govt retrieved 7.5k crore worth temple lands; 3,000th consecration on June 5
Chennai: The DMK govt has retrieved 7,500 acres of encroached temple land worth 7,671 crore in the last four years. The govt has also spent 1,700 crore for renovation of 19 major temples under an integrated masterplan and has performed consecration for more than 2900 temples, according to an official press release. The statement, listing out the achievements of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, said apart from the retrieval of the encroached lands, about 2 lakh acres of temple lands were scientifically surveyed and were brought under protection by earmarking their boundaries. The dept has also performed consecration of more than 2,900 temples which included 119 temples which never had the ceremony done in several decades. The 3,000th consecration under DMK govt will be performed at Arulmigu Agneeswaraswamy temple in Thirupugalur on June 5, the statement said. Renovation work was undertaken in 274 temples which were more than 1,000 years old at a cost of 429 crores. Among the ongoing projects, renovation works are being carried out at 25,813 temples at a cost of 5,970 crore.
