"Matter of great satisfaction": Bihar CM Nitish Kumar after social security beneficiaries express gratitude for increased pension

Patna (Bihar) [India], July 10 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday expressed his satisfaction after social security beneficiaries thanked him for increasing their pension amount from 400 to 1,100 per month. Sushila Devi from Bakhtiyarpur, Lakshmi Devi from Chandwari, and other beneficiaries appreciated the increased pension amount, stating it will cover their monthly expenses and allow them to live with dignity. The beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying they would no longer have to rely on financial help, thanks to the increased pension. In a post on X, CM Nitish Kumar said, 'Today, I read the reactions of several people in the Hindustan newspaper, including Sushila Devi ji from Bakhtiyarpur, Lakshmi Devi ji from Chandwari in Mokama, Bandi Khatoon ji from Paliganj, Mahendra Prasad ji from Taregana Dih in Masaurhi, and Bhatt Kumar and his wife Geeta Kumari from Dinara in Bikram block. They all say that the increase in the pension amount will easily cover their monthly expenses, and now they won't have to stretch out their hands before anyone. This is a matter of great satisfaction.' The increased pension amount is part of the state's social security pension schemes, including the Mukhyamantri Vridhajan Pension Yojana, the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, and the Lakshmibai Social Security Pension Scheme. The government aims to provide financial support to vulnerable sections of society, ensuring their dignity and well-being. 'Yesterday was a day of great joy for a large population of the state. You know that the social security pension amount has been increased from 400 rupees to 1100 rupees, and yesterday, through D.B.T., an amount of 1227.27 crore rupees was transferred at the increased rate to the accounts of more than 1 crore 11 lakh beneficiaries in the state,' Kumar posted on X. CM Nitish Kumar has instructed the Health Department to ensure that all beneficiaries are provided with Ayushman Bharat cards. This will enable them to receive proper medical treatment free of cost in case of illness, further improving their quality of life. 'We want all of you to remain healthy and happy, and that is why I have instructed the Health Department to ensure that all of you are provided with the Ayushman Bharat card so that, in case of illness, you can receive proper treatment free of cost. The elderly, widowed women, and differently-abled individuals are an important part of society, and we are continuously working to improve their lives,' said the Bihar CM. The Chief Minister emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring that every section and class of society receives their full rights and respect. 'Ensuring that every section and class of society in the state receives their full rights and respect has been our priority from the beginning,' he added. The initiative, implemented on June 21, saw 1,227.27 crore transferred to beneficiaries' accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) on July 9. On July 11, Kumar will transfer 1,227.27 crore to over 1.11 crore beneficiaries under six social security pension schemes via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a slew of measures in poll-bound Bihar to strengthen his government's presence ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Some of the key measures include 35% reservation for Women in Government jobs, domicile policy, job recruitment drive, increased pension for social security beneficiaries, Ayushman Bharat cards and youth-focused initiatives. These measures are seen as an attempt by Nitish Kumar to consolidate his vote bank and attract new supporters ahead of the assembly elections. The opposition, led by Tejashwi Yadav, has also announced several promises, including providing 2,500 per month to women under the 'Mai-Bahen Mann Yojana'. The upcoming Bihar assembly elections, scheduled later this year, is expected to be a closely contested one, with both sides vying for the support of women and youth voters. (ANI)

Primary education should be in mother tongue, says RSS

Primary education should be given in mother tongue, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said on Monday (July 7, 2025), amid a raging controversy over the three-language policy. The statement comes amid a roll-back in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. 'All the Indian languages are national languages. This has been the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's stated position for a long time now. In each State, people speak their own language, they insist that primary education should be given in that language. I think, this is a well-established fact for some time now,' Sunil Ambekar, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh, said in New Delhi. The statement assumes significance in the background of the protests against the three-language policy. In Maharashtra, the State government had to scrap the two orders implementing the introduction of the third language in primary education. Several civil society members and Opposition parties termed it an effort to 'impose Hindi'. In a protest held in Mumbai on Monday (July 7, 2025), academics called it the RSS agenda of 'Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan'. 'The BJP is trying to further this agenda of the RSS. Our insistence is on Marathi language, on the complete withdrawal of the three-language policy in primary education in State Board schools,' Deepak Pawar of the Marathi Abhyas Kendra said on Monday. Reacting to the statement by the RSS, Maharashtra Minister and BJP leader Ashish Shelar told The Hindu, 'There is no doubt about the Sangh statement. Even the BJP believes that primary education should take place in mother tongue. The NEP [National Education Policy] has given prerogative to each State with respect to the three-language policy. Accordingly, the Maharashtra government had taken its decision, which stands cancelled now.'

HMVL reports ₹45.40 crore Q4 profit amid strong digital growth

Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd (HMVL), the publisher of Hindustan and the operator of digital platform OTTPlay, reported a profit after tax of ₹ 45.40 crore in the quarter ended March, up from ₹ 10.74 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations rose to ₹ 201.25 crore from ₹ 188.05 crore last year, HMVL said in a regulatory filing on Monday. Total expenses in the fourth quarter were lower at ₹ 208.58 crore versus ₹ 219.51 crore in the year-ago period. Revenue from printing and publishing of newspapers and periodicals was marginally lower at ₹ 180.59 crore compared with ₹ 181.47 crore a year earlier, the filing said. Digital segment revenue surged threefold year-on-year to ₹ 19.64 crore from ₹ 5.84 crore in the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal. HMVL said its board has approved investments of up to ₹ 7.71 crore in electric mobility player VIR Mobility Pvt. Ltd by subscribing to equity shares or convertible equity-linked instruments. 'The investment is being made in the fast-growing target entity for the purpose of capital return in future with an aim to leverage media assets owned by the company,' the filing said. VIR Mobility currently has three versions of e-bikes in its portfolio priced between ₹ 35,000 and ₹ 55,000, it added. In 2022, OTTPlay, the recommendation and content discovery platform for streaming services, launched by HT Labs, turned into a streaming service featuring content from a range of OTT platforms. With the launch of OTTplay Premium, the service now hosts multiple Indian and international video streaming services. Subscribers are now able to choose from language-based or thematic subscription bundles. The platform has onboarded SonyLIV, ZEE5, Lionsgate Play, Sun NXT, ShemarooMe, Curiosity Stream, ShortsTV and DocuBay streaming services, besides four international brands such as Hallmark Movies Now, DUST, FUSE+ and Tastemade+, which were so far unavailable in India. HT Labs is the innovation platform of HT Media, which is also the publisher of Mint. Apart from Hindustan, HMVL also publishes Nandan (a children's magazine), and Kadambini (a socio-cultural magazine). Even though telecom operators also offer OTT video platforms as a bundled service, the arrival of aggregators such as OTTPlay, Prime Video Channels, Tata Play and Airtel XStream Premium bodes well for the reach and subscriber base of platforms that may not be investing aggressively in distribution and marketing.
