Dania-Zi Yu get timely boost for Asian meet after winning in Kangar
Dynamic duo: Dania Sofea (left) and Low Zi Yu. — BAM PETALING JAYA: A title win at the Malaysian Junior International Challenge has given Dania Sofea Zaidi and Low Zi Yu the perfect boost ahead of the Asian Junior Championships in Solo, Indonesia from July 18-27. The win was especially meaningful for Dania, who had earlier fallen short in the mixed doubles final with Datu Anif Isaac Datu Asrah despite going in as the top seeds in Kangar, Perlis yesterday. Dania-Datu lost 22-20, 15-21, 12-21 to compatriots Loh Zi Heng-Noraqilah Maisarah in a 54-minute duel. But the Johor-born shuttler made amends in the girls' doubles final when she and Zi Yu outplayed Thailand's Khanaphon Deearom-Thanaphon Deearom 21-11, 21-19 to lift the title. 'I just gave my best. Of course, there's pressure going into the Asian Juniors because the coaches are expecting Zi Yu and I to deliver, especially after we finished runners-up at the World Junior Championships last year. But I'm embracing the pressure,' said Dania. Top seeds Loh Zi Heng-Tan Zhi Yang failed to add more titles for Malaysia when they fell to Indonesia's Alexius Subagio-Aquino Tangka 21-18, 19-21, 20-22 in the boys' doubles final. All eyes will now be on Dania in Solo, where she will play in the girls', mixed doubles and mixed team events. Dania-Zi Yu have been seeded second in the girls' doubles, while Dania-Datu will also go in as the second seeds in the mixed doubles. Aira crashes out but sister Aifa reaches semis in style at Asian meet
PETALING JAYA: It was a day of contrasting fortunes for the Azman siblings Aira and Aifa in the Asian Championships. Second seed Aira was shocked by teammate and sixth seed Yee Xin Ying when the latter made it to the semi-finals after scoring a sensational 11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 11-8 upset win at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching on Thursday (June 19). Xin Ying will face Hong Kong's Ho Tze Lok, who ended the run of Noor Ainaa Amani Ampandi with a 11-4, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5 win. Aifa, however, was in her element when she dumped third-fourth seed Lee Ka Yi of Hong Kong 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 in the quarter-finals. Aifa will face top seed Rachel Arnold, who fought hard to beat Hong Kong's Tong Tsz Wing 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 in another last eight match. It was sweet revenge for Rachel, who came close to becoming Asian champion in 2021 but was denied by Tsz Wing in the final in Pakistan. Said Rachel: "I'm feeling confident, but I still have to stay sharp in order to win the championship." "I got close to winning in 2021, so I'm really hoping to redeem it this time," she said. KUALA LUMPUR: Former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik got their Malaysia Masters campaign off to a composed start at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. Fresh off their Thailand Open triumph, the world No. 3 overcame Taiwan's world No. 17 Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-18, 21-16 in a steady straight-games win to book their place in the second round. Despite the smooth performance, Aaron admitted concerns over a short recovery period after back-to-back tournaments. "We just finished a tournament last week, so we haven't had enough rest. But it's not really a problem," said Aaron. "Our performance today was just okay. There's definitely room for improvement." Next up for Aaron-Wooi Yik is another Taiwanese combination — world No. 21 Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han — whom they have never played before. Wooi Yik acknowledged the challenge of taking on unfamiliar opponents. "It's never easy when you haven't played a pair before," he said. "Even in Thailand, we had to battle hard against a French pair we'd never faced. You can't afford to take anyone lightly these days." "The level in men's doubles is incredibly high right now. Every pair brings something unique. There's no such thing as an easy match anymore." Wooi Yik credited their coach Herry IP for keeping them on track.
