Shunned by hometown Razorbacks, redshirt-freshman Lindsey set to lead Minnesota offense

LAS VEGAS — Minnesota redshirt freshman Drake Lindsey grew up with Arkansas blood running through his veins. His grandfather, Jim, played football at Arkansas before being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. His uncle played tight end for the Razorbacks, his dad was a wide receiver for them, his cousin played quarterback for the Hogs, and another uncle also played quarterback. In addition, his sister recently finished playing basketball in Fayetteville, while another cousin runs track there. So, after finishing his high school career with a state championship and throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 54 touchdowns with only three interceptions in his senior season, it seemed like a no-brainer he'd be lighting up Razorback Stadium. But his hometown college never made him an offer. 'I think in the beginning of my high school career, because I was playing really well, I was just wondering if it was going to happen,' Lindsey said. 'Growing up, you don't really think about playing anywhere else. You grow up going to Arkansas games.' This year, he's ready to prove Arkansas' loss was Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck's gain. 'I think it was a blessing in disguise,' Lindsey told The Associated Press at Big Ten media days. 'I got to meet a lot of good people, and I'm with the best coach in the country as a human being and as a coach. I don't think there's another coach in the country that's like coach Fleck as a person and as a coach. I'm super fortunate to have him as my head coach. 'So, wouldn't change it for the world.' The 2024 Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year saw playing time in three games last season and completed 4-of-5 attempts for 50 yards and a touchdown while being mentored by Max Brosmer, who signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in April. Now, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound quarterback is set to take over an offense that finished 107th in the nation with 337.8 yards per game, including the 76th-ranked passing attack that averaged 222.2 yards per outing. Lindsey spoke confidently about turning things around, pointing out the importance of improving the unit's balance after last year's rushing attack gained just 115.6 yards per game (109th nationally). And while he was complimentary of the running backs room, he seemingly knows who'll butter his bread, as he used an impeccable scouting report to break down the strengths of each offensive linemen. 'I've had some lunches and stuff set up with O-line this summer,' he said. 'And then this season, we'll do something every week, and get that thing rolling.' Fleck said he's confident he's got the right guy under center. '(Drake) really studied Max Brosmer constantly,' Fleck said. 'Really was his right-hand man. Learned how to lead an entire football team at a very young age. You know how hard it is to find a freshman quarterback that you can have for those four years. We feel we have a really good quarterback in Drake Lindsey.'

NFL Network Predicts Cowboys' 'Hogs' Will End Championship Drought

NFL Network Predicts Cowboys' 'Hogs' Will End Championship Drought originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dallas Cowboys' left guard Tyler Smith knows the buck starts and stops with the offensive line under Brian Schottenheimer, and now, a 10-year NFL veteran is following suit with his thoughts. Advertisement After an offseason that saw Tyler Booker be drafted in the first round to "replace" Zack Martin, coupled with the expected improvement of Tyler Guyton, Cooper Beebe and Terence Steele, Dallas has a solid starting five to protect Dak Prescott. Plus, with Conor Riley as the offensive line coach, along with coordinator Klayton Adams, the Cowboys have two coaches who know how to get the most out of the group. As such, NFL veteran Leger Douzable believes that, due to the Cowboys' makeup along the line, Schottenheimer's team will break its NFC Championship drought. "This is the one reason this Cowboys team will make it back to the conference championship, I know it's been 30 years, it's going to be the hogs up front," Douzable said on NFL Network. "If they can develop and mesh, this team has a chance to go to the conference championship." Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports My word, that is a big if, Mr. Douzable. Advertisement First off, we can't call Dallas linemen 'Hogs.' That's the classic Washington nickname and we're a bit bothered that NFL Network would commit that gaffe. But with three first round picks along the line, and a center in Beebe who per Schottenheimer, already has command regarding checks made at the line of scrimmage, and the solid play (we hope) of Steele, this offensive line might be able to hold up in both the run and pass game to give Dak time to dissect defenses. Granted, we aren't anointing them as anything yet, so we will hold fire, but training camp will be the first "proper" look at what Schottenheimer is dealing with. And once real NFL bullets start flying, we can properly assess this offensive line that Douzable thinks will be the reason Dallas' infamous championship drought will end. IceHogs make it two straight wins in Milwaukee; headed home to Rockford

MILWAUKEE, WI. (WTVO/WQRF) — Yep, playoff hockey is different than regular season hockey, and the Rockford IceHogs seem to be built for the former. The Hogs were only 31-33-6-2 in the regular season, and they finished in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division, but they're on fire night they ran their postseason record to 4-0 by dominating the Central Division Champion Milwaukee Admirals on the Admirals home ice. The Hogs won 6-1. It's their second win in three nights in Anderson had a hat track barely a minute into the second period. He scored a pair of goals in the first period and then got his third tally just minutes after the first intermission ended. Anderson also had an assist. Samuel Savoie, Brett Seney and Aidan Thompson also scored goals for the IceHogs. Drew Commesso ran his postseason record to 4-0 by turning away 30 Milwaukee shots on IceHogs lead the best-of-five series 2 games to none. The next two games, if both are needed, will be played in Rockford this coming Wednesday night and then on Friday IceHogs swept their way through their opening playoff opponent the Chicago Wolves in two games. Rockford, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The IceHogs bounced the Chicago Wolves from the Calder Cup playoffs. Now they have the Milwaukee Admirals in their sights. Their best-of-five series opens Thursday night in Hogs got plenty of rest over the weekend thanks to their clincher last Friday morning they had an optional workout at the BMO. It benefited a lot of the young newcomers on the team. Goalie Cameron Rowe, forward AJ Spellacy, forward Mark Vanacker, and defenseman Taige Harding all of the Hogs top players also were on the ice. Defenseman Kevin Korchinski, who was huge with two goals in the Chicago Series was one of them. Goaltender Drew Commesso, the MVP of the Chicago series was also on the ice getting some instruction from goaltender coach Matt Dach wasn't on the ice Tuesday, but he is ready to go for this series with Milwaukee after recovering from a shoulder injury. After sitting out the last six weeks, Dach is fired up to play. 'It'll be very exciting to get back into the game on Thursday and just kind of coming down and watching the guys play and even watching the NHL playoffs, it just kind of gets you itching to get back out there. You want to go out there and make an impact, so I'm really looking forward to Thursday.'Dach says he was impressed with what he saw from his teammates in the two games against the Wolves.'I was really happy with the guys and really proud of them how they played, being physical and hard on pucks. Playing the right way. I think that's what we've got to take into the series against Milwaukee. Play hard and just a smart game, and I think we'll like our outcome.'
