Thunderbirds host post-parade party following St. Patrick's festivities

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Hundreds of people who celebrated their Irish roots last weekend gathered at the Thunderbirds game Saturday night to keep the green season going. It was a night filled with Irish spirit, hockey, and people who love the city of Springfield. The Springfield Thunderbirds hosted a post-parade party, ensuring the Saint Patrick's celebrations continued. Experts share tips at Western Mass Home and Garden Show The party was hosted at Saturday's game as the Thunderbirds took on the Iowa Wild. 'We marched in the parade, we've been going to the parade for many years,' said Tina Harkness of the Springfield Kiltie Band. Annually, the Holyoke St. Patrick's festivities bring in around $20 million to local businesses and organizations. The Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade committee members, their families, and the Colleens were among those who gathered to enjoy hockey and share their spirit with the community. 'We definitely celebrated,' said Sheila Gould of Chicopee. 'I was Holyoke's 50th Grand Colleen about 21 years ago, so we're still really involved.' The Springfield Kiltie Band said it needs pipers and drummers, and that no experience is needed. Those who love Celtic music are encouraged to reach out. Thousands collect bibs for Holyoke's 48th St. Patrick's road race

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 48th annual Holyoke St. Patrick's road race kicks off on Saturday. Thousands of people picked up their bibs Friday on Maple Street. Those who did not can do so Saturday on race day from 9 a.m. to noon at the same location. The kid's fun run starts at 11 a.m., followed by the 10K road race at one o'clock. 'I think it's going to be a great day tomorrow the excitement is here and we're ready for it,' said Director Brian Donoghue. It is not too late to register for the race either, those interested can go online, and sign up. HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Holyoke city council held a special meeting Tuesday, honoring the Holyoke St. Patrick's committee. The council planned to recognize the committee just ahead of the City's annual St. Patrick's Parade. 22News spoke to Joe O'Connor, the president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, on some of the people being recognized. 'Tonight is a special night for the Ancient Order of Hibernians to come in and to honor our dignitary's, who have revived awards this year,' he says. 'Sheryl DuPont is the lady of the year, Dan Murphy is the man of the year, and own Daniel is the Christian award recipient.' the Holyoke St. Patrick's parade is happening this Sunday. The parade will be broadcasted live right here on 22News. Coverage starts at noon. HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – To help visitors get in and out of Holyoke quickly and safely during the St. Patrick's weekend celebrations, the city of Holyoke and the Tourism Advisory Committee partnered with MGM Springfield to offer a free shuttle bus service to and from Holyoke. Visitors can park for free at the MGM casino parking garage in Springfield and catch a shuttle at MGM Way with drop-off at the Holyoke City Hall. Marshal Mania kickoff party raises funds for 72nd Holyoke Saint Patrick's Parade On March 22 and 23, the buses will run on a loop every thirty minutes from MGM and Holyoke City Hall. 11:00 a.m.: First shuttle leaves MGM Casino for Holyoke City Hall 4:30 p.m. (4:45 p.m. on Sunday): Last shuttle leaves City Hall for MGM Casino Funding for the shuttle was made possible from the Mass Gaming Mitigation Grant, the OPED team and Tourism Advisory Committee. 'We're excited to offer this service once again,' said Aaron Vega, Director of Planning and Economic Development. 'It's a great partnership with MGM, and of course the amazing Parade Committee, to ensure the weekend is filled with celebration and is safe for all involved.' Springfield St. Patrick's Parade Committe holds Marshal Reception

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Irish festivities were held in Springfield ealier Sunday for the parade marshal reception at the John Boyle O'Reilly Club. This year's parade Marshal is Kathy Tobin Martin who was honored Sunday evening. Martin Will be leading the Springfield contingent at the Upcoming Holyoke St. Patrick's parade. Martin is looking forward to honoring both her family's legacy and the contribution of Irish immigrants who helped shape the region. 'I love this city and I love this coomunity that has made me feel welcome. And I love the tradition of handing it off generation to generation. So ths is probably the most special day in my life, walking down the parade route with all of my communtiy,' said Martin. Martin recieved an Irish Shillelagh, which is a wooden walking stick that is handed down from Marshal to Marshal. She'll be using it in the parade on March 23rd, which you can watch on 22News.
