Man shot dead after severing sister's arm: Vic police

A man has been shot dead by police after allegedly severing his sister's arm during an attack which left her in a coma with life-threatening injuries. Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the altercation was reported to police by the pair's mother and took place at a home in Yarra Junction, 55km east of Melbourne, on Wednesday evening. Police heard screaming coming from inside the home shortly after arriving at the scene. "They then entered the bedroom and were confronted by a female who appeared to be unconscious and appeared to have a limb that was partially severed, being strangled by a man," Mr Barrett told reporters on Thursday. Officers deployed their Tasers three times in an attempt to stop the assault, but the man continued to strangle his sister, Mr Barrett said. An officer discharged their firearm, fatally shooting the man. "This is tragic, it's every police officer's nightmare," Mr Barrett said. "Both police officers are distressed. They understand the realities of their job ... but it's not what they come to work to do." The woman was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she remains in a coma with life-threatening injuries. Mr Barrett said homicide detectives and forensic examiners remain at the scene, which he described as "graphic and dramatic". He confirmed a sword was also found inside the home. Premier Jacinta Allan described the shooting as distressing and said her thoughts were with the family. "They're going to be deeply, deeply traumatised by this tragedy," she said. The man is known to police through his medical condition. State Coroner John Cain attended the scene on Wednesday night. Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the matter with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as is standard procedure for a fatal police shooting.

Five alleged 'foot soldiers' arrested over Melbourne car park shooting of Robert Issa

Police have arrested five men who they allege were "foot soldiers" in the daylight shooting of Melbourne man Robert Issa in a shopping centre car park almost two years ago. The group, aged between 26 and 33, was taken into custody before police raided six addresses in Kew, Mickleham, Pascoe Vale and Fawkner early on Thursday. The five men are now being interviewed by detectives. Mr Issa, 27, was sitting next to a male associate in a white Mercedes station wagon parked outside the Craigieburn Central shopping centre when the incident unfolded on October 7, 2023. Police allege a black Range Rover pulled up before a number of men got out and fired multiple shots into the other vehicle. The 27-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. His associate was seriously injured. Police believe the killing was a targeted attack between organised crime figures but say they have an "open mind" as to the motive. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas from the Homicide Squad told reporters on Thursday that the arrests came nearly two years into a "significant" and "protracted" investigation. "These arrests are a turning point in this investigation, but they are only the beginning," he said. "We believe these men were likely the foot soldiers who carried out the [alleged] murder, but we believe there are also people further up the chain who are responsible for ordering this attack. "At this stage, we believe this was a targeted attack and we are confident there is some organised crime involvement in this. We keep an open mind as to what that is." The detective repeatedly appealed for members of the public to come forward with information as police work to identify who ordered and paid for the shooting. The incident took place at about 3pm on a Saturday in a relatively full car park as members of the public carried out their shopping. "There were families going about their business. Children walking through the car park," Detective Inspector Thomas said. "It could very well have ended with other people, other innocent people perhaps, being injured or killed."

Five ‘foot soldiers' arrested over daylight murder of underworld figure Robert Issa

Homicide detectives have arrested five men over the brazen daylight murder of underworld player Robert Issa at a busy shopping centre car park in Melbourne's northern suburbs in 2023. Officers arrested the men during a series of early morning raids on six properties in Kew, Mickleham, Pascoe Vale and Fawkner on Thursday. Investigators believe the men, a 29-year-old from Kew, a 31-year-old from Mickleham, a 33-year-old from Pascoe Vale, and two 26-year-old men from Fawkner, are foot soldiers hired to carry out the hit. 'We believe there are also people further up the chain who are responsible for ordering this attack,' Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said. Thomas said the arrests represented a turning point in the investigation, but there was still work to be done. 'A significant and protracted investigation by the Homicide Squad over the past two years has led us to today's arrests, but this investigation is far from over,' Thomas said. 'We will do everything we can to hold accountable every single person involved in this shooting. If you know you are part of that chain, now is the time for you to come and speak to us, because this may be your last opportunity.' Craigieburn man Robert Issa died, and another man was seriously injured when balaclava-clad men sprayed their white Mercedes station wagon with bullets in front of horrified shoppers outside Craigieburn Central shopping centre about 3pm on October 7, 2023. The men fled the scene in a black Range Rover, which was later found torched in Westmeadows.
