The bestselling cars by state in 2024: From CR-V to Tacoma, see what America drives
We see a stream of ads touting the country's bestselling vehicles, but what about the bestsellers in each state? It turns out that just nine vehicles accounted for the top 2024 sales numbers in the 50 states, and we were still genuinely surprised to see which vehicles sell best in which states. Go on, take a guess at what your fellow Americans prefer to drive, then scroll down and see what they really buy. Honda CR-V Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin Here's a surprise to start with. Bet you were expecting to see the Ford F-150 at the top of this list, weren't you? The CR-V and F-150 actually tie for bestseller in the greatest number of states — 13 each — but the Honda is the bigger hit in the more populous states. With available all-wheel drive and a hybrid powertrain, it makes perfect sense that the Honda CR-V would be a big seller in the snow-swept Northeast and right through the rust belt, including Indiana and Ohio, both home to plants that assemble the CR-V. But the well-known Honda is also a bestseller in the areas surrounding D.C. (though the District itself goes for the Toyota RAV4) and the retirement-haven Carolinas. Ford F-150 Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming Ford touts the F-Series as the bestselling trucks in the U.S., though that includes all versions of the F up to and including the Super Duty and commercial models. Break the Fs down by model, and you find the F-150 a bestseller in 13 states, same as the Honda CR-V. The F-150's dominance cuts a swath right though the center of the country, including the wide-open spaces of Montana and Wyoming, truck-lovin' Texas, and deep into the South. It's also the bestseller in Michigan, where the F-150 is built at Ford's famous River Rouge plant. Toyota RAV4 Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont Despite being the bestselling SUV in the States overall, the RAV4 only claims the top spot in seven states, and if you look at the bestsellers on a map, you'll see most are adjacent to the 13 states where the Honda CR-V reigns supreme. The RAV4 has an almost complete lock on New England, but it also has pockets of popularity in Oregon, Idaho and Florida, a testament to the appeal of both its all-weather ability and raw practicality. Surprisingly, the RAV4 is only the second-bestseller in Kentucky, one of several locations where Toyota builds it. Tesla Model Y Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Jersey, Utah, Washington You'd expect Tesla's innovative (if controversial) SUV to be the bestseller in early-adapter California, tech-heavy Washington, and green-minded Colorado, but even we were a little astounded to see what a wide swath it cut through the West. Then again, with up to 327 miles of range and the well-established Supercharger network, the Model Y does make an ideal electric SUV for states with high speed limits and wide-open spaces like Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Alaska, Iowa, Kentucky, West Virginia What ever happened to the Chevrolet versus Ford pickup battle? While the F-150 is the bestseller in 13 states, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 can claim only four, including rough-and-tumble Alaska — though it must annoy the daylights out of Ford that one of those four states is Kentucky, where Ford assembles heavy-duty F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups (and where Toyota builds the Camry and RAV4). Then again, one of the three plants that builds the Silverado 1500 is in Indiana, where the truck is only the third bestseller. Nissan Rogue Tennessee We love the Nissan Rogue — it's No. 1 among compact SUVs in our ultimate car rankings — but judging from its sales, which trail those of the Honda CR-V, Tesla Model Y and Toyota RAV4, it's under-appreciated by much of the country. Well, not in Tennessee, where the Rogue handily outsells its competitors. No surprise, because Tennessee is not only the location of Nissan's U.S. headquarters, it's also where the Rogue is built. It's good to see Tennessee standing up for its own, so how about it, Kentucky and Indiana? Toyota Camry Alabama Time was when the Toyota Camry was the bestselling vehicle in the United States. Nowadays Americans prefer trucks and SUVs, but the midsize Camry sedan remains the bestselling car in the States — and the bestselling vehicle in only one. We figured Alabama would be truck country, but no; it's the one state remaining where Camry sales beat all other vehicles. We at MT hold the Camry in high regard as our No. 1 pick among midsize sedans, and with a thoroughly updated model in Toyota showrooms for 2025, we expect it to continue to do well in the Yellowhammer State. GMC Sierra 1500 Arkansas Well, excuuuuuuuse us, Arkansas! The Ford F-150 may be good enough for 13 states and the Chevrolet Silverado for another four, but it looks Arkansans (er, sorry, Arkansawyers) go for something a little nicer, specifically the posh environs of the GMC Sierra 1500. Maybe it's all that wood and leather that appeal to the citizens of the Natural State. Can't say we blame them; while we've often struggled to justify the cost premium of the Sierra 1500 over its Chevrolet sibling, we can't say the GMCs aren't nice trucks. Incidentally, Arkansas is serious truck country: The Nos. 2 and 3 bestselling vehicles are the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, respectively. Toyota Tacoma Hawaii We had a good time guessing what the bestselling car in Hawaii might be. With so many beautiful places to explore, we figured it might be the Jeep Wrangler. But when you consider that 9 to 10 million tourists visit Hawaii every year — that's more than six times the state's population — it might well be the Ford Mustang convertible, or at least the Mitsubishi Mirage (or, heck, even the Wrangler). Nope: Turns out Hawaiians are a practical lot, and the bestselling vehicle is the Toyota Tacoma, king of mid-size truck sales. Well, that makes sense; Tacomas are useful, practical, and all but un-killable. We're sure the Aloha State will welcome the new-for-2025 version of the Tacoma. Illustrations by Ryan Lugo

I Drove the 2025 Hyundai Tucson XRT. Here's My Brutally Honest Review
Alright, let's talk about the 2025 Hyundai Tucson. In a sea of compact SUVs that seem designed by a committee to be as inoffensive as possible, the Tucson rolls up looking like it's from five years in the future. It features a distinctive front grille with a stack of integrated lights and an interior equipped with more screens than a Best Buy. It's a genuinely cool-looking vehicle. But here's the thing: this segment is an absolute knife fight. You've got the tried and true Toyota RAV4, the do-it-all Honda CR-V, and a dozen other players all vying for the top spot. So, does Hyundai's flashy contender have the substance to back up its style? 0:07 / 0:09 2024 Land Rover Defender V8 review: Still wild at heart Watch More Engine, Performance, and the Elephant in the Room So, let's get right to the heart of it. The XRT trim, with its tough-guy black cladding and purposeful roof rails, looks like it's ready to tackle a mountain. The problem is that Hyundai only offers one engine option for this trim, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces a modest 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Source: Hyundai Frankly, it's underpowered. In a world where competitors are offering punchy turbos or refined hybrids as standard, this engine feels like it's working its tail off just to keep up. Merging onto the highway requires planning, and the engine groans and whines in a way that constantly reminds you that you're in a budget-conscious vehicle. Independent tests have clocked it doing 0-60 mph in a leisurely 8.8 seconds, which feels about right. On top of that, the body roll in corners is more pronounced than you'd like, and the ride can feel a bit unsettled over broken pavement. It simply lacks the driving confidence of its main rivals. Now, here's the kicker: Hyundai offers a significantly better powertrain option for the Tucson, but you can't get it on the XRT. The Hybrid model pairs a 1.6-liter turbo engine with an electric motor for a combined 231 horsepower and, more importantly, 258 lb-ft of torque. It's a night-and-day difference. You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. The Hybrid is quicker (0-60 in about 7.1 seconds), quieter, and far more responsive. It even features a proper 6-speed automatic transmission instead of a CVT, which is greatly appreciated for a more refined driving experience. If you're serious about buying a Tucson, the Hybrid is the one you should get. Exterior Design: Standing Out From the Crowd Okay, while the driving dynamics of the base engine are a letdown, the exterior design is a massive win. This is one of Tucson's biggest selling points. While other SUVs are content to be forgettable family-hauling blobs, the Tucson embraces a bold, 'Parametric Dynamics' design language. Source: Hyundai The highlight is the front end. The 'Parametric Jewel' daytime running lights are seamlessly integrated into the grille, so when the car is off, the whole front has this clean, dark look. When you turn it on, the lights illuminate in a unique geometric pattern. For 2025, they've made these lighting elements bigger and bolder. The sharp creases and character lines down the side give it a sense of motion, and the full-width LED lightbar in the back, with its fang-like taillights, looks fantastic at night. The XRT trim doubles down on the aggressive look with exclusive 18-inch wheels, chunky black lower-body cladding, and beefy, bridge-style roof rails that are far more practical than the flush-mounted rails on other trims. Source: Hyundai Interior: A Tech-Forward and Seriously Practical Cabin Step inside the 2025 Tucson, and it continues to impress. This is where Hyundai is really throwing down the gauntlet. The redesigned cabin feels incredibly tech-forward and expensive. On higher trims, you get a beautiful panoramic curved display that seamlessly merges a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen into one unit. It's the kind of feature you expect to see in a Genesis or a BMW, not a mainstream compact SUV. Source: Hyundai Crucially, Hyundai listened to feedback and reintroduced physical knobs for volume and tuning, along with a row of hard buttons for climate control. It's the perfect blend of high-tech cool and real-world usability. The seats are comfortable, there are storage cubbies throughout, and the rear seat is spacious, offering an impressive 41.3 inches of legroom. Source: Hyundai But Tucson's ultimate trump card is its cargo space. It boasts a massive 38.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and a cavernous, class-leading 80.3 cubic feet with them folded down. That's more than both the Toyota RAV4 (69.8 cu. ft.) and the Honda CR-V (76.5 cu. ft.). For families or anyone who needs to haul a lot of stuff, that's a huge, practical advantage. Source: Hyundai Pricing and Fuel Economy The 2025 Tucson lineup is priced competitively. The gas-only models start at $28,705, and the XRT AWD we're focused on lands at $33,015. What's interesting is that this is the exact same price as the SEL Convenience AWD trim, which trades the XRT's rugged looks for a panoramic sunroof and the full 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. If you're interested in the hybrid model, the base 'Blue' trim starts at a respectable $33,465. Source: Hyundai The 2.5L AWD model's fuel economy is average, rated at 23 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. However, the Hybrid model is a star, delivering a much more impressive 38 MPG combined. All Things Tech and Safety Hyundai doesn't skimp on the tech. For 2025, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard across the board. A nice value-add is Hyundai's Bluelink+ connected services, which is now complimentary for the life of the vehicle for the original owner. This gives you remote start, vehicle tracking, and the Digital Key 2, which lets you use your smartphone as a key. Source: Hyundai Safety is another high point. Every Tucson comes standard with the Hyundai SmartSense suite, which includes forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot collision warning. Higher trims get Highway Driving Assist, a fantastic semi-autonomous system for highway cruising. It's no surprise the Tucson earned a 2025 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. What's Uniquely Tucson XTR? It's that contradiction we keep coming back to, perfectly captured by the XRT trim. Hyundai bolted on all the right visual cues, like aggressive body cladding, off-road tires, and purposeful roof rails. But let's be clear… This is a design package. There's no extra ground clearance, no skid plates, and no substantive mechanical upgrades for tackling anything more challenging than a gravel driveway or a slightly rocky trail. Source: Hyundai The XRT is the automotive equivalent of wearing brand-new hiking boots to the mall. It absolutely looks the part, but it isn't really designed to get dirty. It's for someone who wants to project an adventurous lifestyle on their daily commute, and there's a huge market for that. Beyond that fashion statement, its other standout feature is that large cargo area. No other vehicle in its class can swallow as much gear, which makes the Tucson an incredibly practical choice, regardless of what boots you're wearing. The Competition Toyota RAV4: The sales king. Its advantages are a rock-solid reputation for reliability, better resale value, and a slightly more powerful base engine. Its interior and tech feel a generation behind the Tucson, though. An all-new RAV4 is incoming, though. The sales king. Its advantages are a rock-solid reputation for reliability, better resale value, and a slightly more powerful base engine. Its interior and tech feel a generation behind the Tucson, though. An all-new RAV4 is incoming, though. Honda CR-V: The CR-V is widely seen as having a more refined and composed ride. It's another ultra-reliable and practical option, although the Tucson beats it in terms of bold styling and maximum cargo space. The CR-V is widely seen as having a more refined and composed ride. It's another ultra-reliable and practical option, although the Tucson beats it in terms of bold styling and maximum cargo space. Mazda CX-50: The athlete. The CX-50 is aimed squarely at the person who prioritizes the act of driving. Its handling is sharper, its chassis feels more athletic in the corners, and its interior has a genuinely premium fit and finish. It also comes standard with all-wheel drive and offers a potent 256-hp turbo engine that scoots. Final Thoughts The 2025 Hyundai Tucson is a compelling package. It nails the things that many buyers see and touch every day: head-turning style, a feature-packed and spacious interior, and user-friendly technology. It represents a fantastic value, especially when you factor in the industry-best 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The XRT trim, specifically, is for a very particular buyer, someone who is completely sold on the rugged look and is willing to live with the base engine's performance to get it. For everyone else, the smarter money is on the Tucson Hybrid. About the Author Kyle Edward View Profile

I Drove the All-New 2025 Honda CR-V TrailSport. Here's My Brutally Honest Review
Yet another SUV in off-road guise The 2026 Honda CR-V is well-known and widely driven, being the most popular Honda sold in America, with more than 400,000 of them sold last year. While Toyota takes all kinds of credit for its hybrids, Honda deserves its share of credit, as nearly half of CR-V buyers justifiably choose the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder hybrid driveline. It returns better EPA-rated fuel economy than its conventional turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder sibling, as high as 43 mpg in combined city/highway driving vs 30 mpg. It also delivers more power, at 204 horsepower for the hybrid versus 190 for the conventional powertrain. Since Honda recommends 91 octane fuel, you'll want to use as little gasoline as possible. 0:03 / 0:09 Thinking about buying a Toyota RAV4? These 5 rivals might change your mind Watch More 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport — Source: Honda What makes the Honda CR-V an American favorite Regardless of which driveline you choose, you'll find the Honda CR-V has self-assured handling and a spacious interior that offers 104 cubic feet of passenger space and a generous 36 cubic feet of cargo room. It's a fairly quiet place, with a roomy back seat and nice interior furnishings. If it's within your budget, the Honda CR-V Hybrid is the model to choose. It starts with the front-wheel-drive Sport Hybrid, at $37,025 including destination charge, and ascends through the Sport Hybrid AWD, TrailSport Hybrid AWD, Sport-L Hybrid FWD, Sport-L Hybrid AWD, and Sport Touring Hybrid AWD, topping out at $43,645. Non-hybrid versions are more affordable, with the LX FWD starting at $30,920 including destination charge, climbing up through LX AWD, EX FWD, EX AWD, EX-L FWD, and EX-L AWD at $38,295. All CR-Vs come with a continuously variable automatic transmission. 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport — Source: Honda The 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid can tow up to 1,000 pounds in Hybrid trim, or 1,500 pounds with the non-hybrid driveline. The payload capacity for the hybrid is 840 pounds, while non-hybrid variants have a capacity of 1,106 pounds. Front-wheel drive is available on all trims except for TrailSport and Sport Touring trims, which get standard all-wheel drive only. All-wheel drive is available on lesser trims for an additional $1,500. Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. Research and compare vehicles, too. Sign up or sign in with Google Facebook Microsoft Apple By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport — Source: Honda For 2026, the Honda CR-V can be optioned with a 10.2-inch infotainment screen, 46% larger than before, while the standard touchscreen is now two inches larger, measuring 9 inches. A wireless smartphone charger, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are now standard. There are new wheel designs, of course, and hybrid models are notable by their exterior blackout trim around the windows. Low-speed traction control has been improved. A new twist to a perennial bestseller 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport — Source: Honda Of course, if you noticed an unfamiliar name among the trim levels, it's the TrailSport Hybrid, a trim level slowly spreading across the Honda vehicle lineup to entice off-road buyers. First seen on the 2022 Honda Passport midsize SUV, it continues on the redesigned 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport, which adds all-terrain 31-inch tires on 18-inch wheels, an off-road tuned suspension, recovery hooks, skid plates, roof rails, a heated windshield and an integrated Class III trailer hitch with harness that can yank 5,000 pounds of your favorite towable plaything. While it lacks a way to lock the Passport TrailSport into low gear, engaging Sport mode and manually shifting into first gear comes close. One would expect such additions to the 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport. 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport — Source: Honda Given its mainstream audience, you wouldn't expect it to traverse truly challenging terrain, but you might expect more than what Honda delivers. While we love the CR-V, we come away disappointed by the TrailSport. The 2026 CR-V TrailSport Hybrid package includes revised trim garnishes to the front and rear fascias, unique badging, logos stitched into the headrests, off-road tires, revised software at speeds below 12 mph, and standard hill descent control, which isn't offered on other CR-Vs. Still, there's little here to encourage true off-roading, which even the Passport possesses, such as underbody skid plates and tow hooks. More tellingly, the TrailSport's 16.1-degree approach angle and 21.3-degree departure angle are no different than those of the CR-V Sport Hybrid, meaning you might save money by adding your own off-road tires and getting as much dirt-tromping proficiency. Even its 8.2 inches of ground clearance is offered on other trims. Venturing into some modest off-road conditions, one that might lift a tire in the air, but the conditions provided are otherwise not much of a challenge. So yes, we find the CR-V executes its tasks flawlessly, but one gets the sense you could do it in any CR-V, or even in a Honda Accord. 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport — Source: Honda Thankfully, Honda's fitting of off-road tires does little to affect the handling on-road, although you feel the rubber working its heart out to maintain grip while cornering. Regardless, grip is still surprisingly good, as is road feel, which is far greater than you'd expect. Steering is well-weighted, and body lean is moderate. Bump absorption is fairly good, and the CR-V has a notably quiet cabin at speed, particularly for a Honda. Its driveline also makes it easy to drive smoothly. In fact, the qualities that make the Honda CR-V such a nice SUV to drive remain intact, revealing how little it has really been changed on the TrailSport. 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport — Source: Honda Final thoughts 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport We love the improvements made to the CR-V for 2026, and were enthused when first hearing of its new TrailSport trim. But the reality proves disappointing, as the changes are minor at best and do not add much to the CR-V's current capabilities. That the majority of CR-V buyers will never contemplate going off-road is something Honda executives know, and they say they tailor each TrailSport package to its model line and buyers. That is certainly true here. Given the paucity of upgrades, one wonders why Honda even bothered to offer it. Then again, the same could be said of similar efforts from Toyota and Nissan. We did love the exclusive Ash Green paint and off-road wheels, and the exclusive trim toughens the CR-V's looks. If that's all that you require, we have the SUV for you.
