New Honda HR-V officially launched

AFTER weeks of teasing, Honda Malaysia has officially taken the cover off the new, facelifted Honda HR-V. With over 170,000 units sold after it was first introduced, the new HR-V is set to continue the success story. The updated third-generation model brings with it a slew of updates that further cement its position as the number one non-national B-Segment SUV in the country. From the outside, the updates include a new front grille that is wider than before. The new front is further distinguished by a redesigned front bumper. The updates to the rear are limited to a new, sleeker full-LED tail light cluster while other exterior updates include redesigned wheels. All variants also come with 18-inch wheels now while before the lower two variants ran on 17-inchers. As for the interior of the car, the centre console has been updated and now includes a storage compartment slotted right below the air-conditioning controls. The eight-inch infotainment system now comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Choice of powertrains are the same as before, with a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, four-cylinder DOHC, i-VTEC engine putting out 121PS and 145Nm of torque, transferred to the wheels through a CVT gearbox. This is found in the entry level HRVs and is the same engine powering the Honda City. Further up, there is a 1.5-litre VTEC, Turbo engine rated at 181PS and 240Nm with power sent to the wheels through a CVT gearbox. The flagship e:HEV hybrid model also remains unchanged as far as the powertrain is concerned. It offers an engine that works as a generator for an electric motor. The motor puts out 131PS and 253Nm while the 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, DOHC, I-VTEC four-pot engine puts out 105PS and 127Nm. The hybrid system in Hondas is unique because unlike other hybrid powertrains, the Atkinson Cycle engine is able to exclusively power the car at high speed without the electric motor backing it up. As for safety systems, Honda Sensing is now available for all variants. However, there are two new systems that have now been included for the flagship, the Adaptive Driving Beam and the Active Cornering Light. The price for all variants are as follows: HRV S-Variant – RM115,900 HRV E-Variant – RM130,900 HRV V-Variant – RM137,900 HRV e:HEV RS- RM143,900

Honda Helps Keep Aging Cars Alive With New Parts Program

For Honda, Old School is Cool For decades, Honda has built its reputation on bulletproof reliability, clever engineering, and cars that often outlived their owners' expectations. Models like the Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Prelude have proven their salt as more than just dependable daily drivers – they were companions, project cars, or even family heirlooms. 0:02 / 0:09 Nissan's revolutionary self-driving tech hits Japan's streets Watch More Many Hondas from the 1980s and '90s are still running today, thanks to loyal owners and a strong aftermarket support. These cars weren't always flashy, but they forged deep emotional connections with people who came of age behind their wheels. The problem is that these discontinued Hondas are becoming increasingly challenging to maintain, with parts getting scarcer each decade. Thankfully, Honda has found a solution. Source: Honda Keeping Old Hondas on the Road To ensure that classic Hondas stay on the road, the company has announced it will begin globally supplying OEM-compatible parts for discontinued vehicles, starting in spring 2026. This is big news for enthusiasts, restorers, and long-time owners, who are struggling to find replacement components. Rather than abandon these aging models, Honda, with the cooperation of various partners, is investing in new solutions to continue supplying replacement parts that are no longer available. These solutions include 3D printing and 'remanufacturing,' which is essentially refurbishing used products and reselling them as functionally new products. Honda claims that these parts will meet the same performance and functional standards as the original ones, and are meant to preserve the function and performance of older Hondas. Original NSX Will Kickstart the Program Honda hasn't shared the list of supported models, but we know which one would kickstart the program. It will be the first-generation Acura NSX (or Honda NSX in other markets), which debuted in 1989. Yes, the mid-engine Japanese supercar is now 36 years old, and it will be the first vehicle covered under a new factory-backed restoration service launching in Japan that will operate in tandem with the parts program. This new offering will effectively replace the NSX Refresh Plan, which has been in place since 1993 and will officially end in summer 2025. Unlike the outgoing program, the new restoration effort will use both genuine and OEM-compatible parts to make service more accessible to a wider range of customers. More details are expected to be released in fall 2025, although Honda hinted that other enthusiast models could be included in the future, potentially classics like the Honda CRX or early Civic Si. New more efficient hybrids coming for Honda

Honda is developing new hybrid models powered by what it says is 'the world's most efficient' combustion powertrain. It is in part a response to slow EV sales. At least 13 new Hondas will arrive between 2027 and 2030 in a revised range of hybrids. Kicking things off are replacements for Civic and Jazz. The new efficient hybrids will help the company to navigate the 'transition period' between ICE power and electric. Announcing the strategy rethink recently, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe noted that 'demand for hybrid-electric vehicles is growing'. He added 'the expansion of the EV market has fallen behind the initial projection'. Mibe felt that the relaxation of CO2 emissions in the US was to blame for the slow growth of EVs. Honda has not said specifically which cars will be first to receive the new powertrain. It is expected to be of the non-plug-in variety and will come in 1.5- and 2.0-litre forms. That matches the capacities of the engines in the current Jazz and Civic. Both are due substantial updates in the coming years. The 1.5-litre version will provide peak torque over a rev range that's 40 per cent broader than currently to maximise efficiency without compromising driving pleasure. Check out our review of Honda's HR-V Sport. Both variants will deliver the best thermal performance of any combustion engine on the market, according to Honda. Meanwhile, the hybrid system's electric motor is smaller to reduce weight and improve packaging. Honda says to expect a 10 per cent improvement in fuel economy. For reference, the current 1.5-litre Jazz returns 3.8L/100km while the 2.0-litre Civic manages 5.1L/100km. Both cars will utilise a new platform that promises better driver engagement, comfort and safety. Civic will be 90kg lighter than the current structure and the bodies applied to the frame will bring a further 10 per cent saving in weight. Moreover, the models based on the new platform will share at least 60 per cent of their parts, such as the engine bay and rear floor. The new hybrid powertrains, meanwhile, will be 30 per cent cheaper to produce than those launched in 2023. Despite cutting its planned investment into EVs, Honda remains committed to their development. 'We would like to see the battery EV business as a pillar of our business from 2030 onward,' CEO Toshihiro Mibe told investors. The 0 Series of electric cars due to be launched in the US next year represents an effective reset of the company's approach to the market, following a poor showing from the E hatchback and disappointing e:Ny1 crossover sales overseas. The electric saloon and upcoming SUV usher in a new design language for Honda that will not be shared with the hybrids. However, a new emblem will be seen on all new Hondas. Toshinobu Minami, head of Honda's design centre, said 'Dynamic and simple will be key words for all models in future.'

Here's What Honda's Doing for the LA Olympics for 2028

Honda will donate $1 million over four years to the Los Angeles Olympics, coming in 2028, and to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics next year. Numerous Honda vehicles will be part of the deal, from minivans and SUVs to ATVs, SxSs, motorcycles, and even Motocompactos. The donations will also cover the Paralympics. Honda has contributed much to various charities and good causes over the years, including donations and loans of vehicles. You can't make an illegal left turn in Pasadena without running into a Honda Tournament of Roses Odyssey, for instance. The brand will continue that wheeled goodwill when the Olympics comes to Los Angeles in 2028, with a fleet of all manner of Honda vehicles to be used by organizers and others in support of the Olympics and Special Olympic Games getting under way in three years. 'Honda will help the world's greatest athletes pursue their dreams in 2028 as a Founding Partner of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games,' the carmaker announced yesterday at its Torrance, California, headquarters, just a half hour's freeway drive south of the very Coliseum that hosted the Games in 1932 and 1984—and will host them again in '28. Exactly which Hondas will be involved has not been sorted out yet. 'It'll be a lot of Honda and Acura EVs,' said Phil Hruka, senior manager of marketing and brand strategy for Honda and Acura. 'It won't just be cars and SUVs. Look for our ATVs, motorcycles, side-by-sides, marine engines, and Motocompactos, too.' Honda's sponsorship of the Paralympic Games was highlighted by the presence of paralympic wheelchair athlete Susannah Scaroni, who has been working with Honda on her racing wheelchair since the company started building them in 2021. Scaroni showed me photos of her race chair, with a carbon-fiber seat that had been created from scans of her body, and tuned for aerodynamic efficiency. The front wheel has properties that keep it centered while moving, but with her form-fitted seat she can turn it just by leaning her body. 'It's a lot better,' she said of the Honda wheelchair's performance. Honda's $1 million investment allows it to serve as the Official Automotive Partner of Team USA, supporting the United States Olympic and Paralympic teams during the LA28 Games and the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina 2026. Honda's by no means the only automaker involved in charitable giving: Toyota USA Foundation is known for its support of K-12 STEM education; General Motors supports STEAM education wherein the A stands for Arts; Hyundai's Hope On Wheels supports pediatric cancer research; and the Ford Foundation supports causes too numerous to name here. That's just a few automotive charities. And yes, there are probably tax benefits and good PR. Nonetheless… Look for Honda vehicles starting at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina next year, and all over LA in 2028. Do charitable donations sway your buying choices? ‘We are living in a war': Mexicans brace for violence ahead of judicial elections

Mexico City CNN — Gadi Mokotov makes cars bulletproof. Living in Mexico City, he sees all sorts of demands for armored vehicles – from military trucks and secretive government vehicles to the Cadillacs of the capital's high rollers and even 10-year-old Hondas. As criminal violence ticks up across the country, the lines for his services have grown longer – and more of his customized cars are coming back for repairs with bullet pocks and shattered windows. 'We are living in a war,' he told CNN. 'A war with the cartels.' Despite the efforts of successive governments to combat Mexico's deeply entrenched cartels, tens of thousands of people are killed each year in crime-related deaths, according to government figures. Recently, Mokotov says one of his private clients in Guadalajara brought their Ford pick-up truck back to his shop with over 100 bullet marks, breaking down into tears, thankful to have survived an ambush. In years past, Mexico City was seen as a relatively peaceful oasis in the country. But even here, violence is spiking, with murders up over 150 percent compared to the same period last year, according to reporting by El Pais. Some attacks appear to be designed to send a message to Mexico's political class. Last week, two aides to the mayor of Mexico City were gunned down on their way to work, in what authorities concluded was a 'direct and highly planned attack.' A few days earlier, a mayoral candidate in the state of Veracruz had been shot and killed alongside three other people during a festive campaign march. As controversial national judicial elections approach on Sunday, some Mexicans across the country are preparing for the worst. According to Mexican think tank Laboratorio Electoral, last year's legislative elections were the most violent on record, with over 40 candidates assassinated and hundreds more violent incidents, including attacks and kidnappings, largely attributed to cartels aiming to sway the vote and intimidate candidates. While the run-up to this year's judicial vote has not been quite as bloody, a climate of fear persists. Across the country, at least four candidates have already abandoned their campaigns after receiving threats, per the international conflict research organization Crisis Group, and several judges have refused to campaign at all in areas controlled by cartels. Since 2012, at least 17 judges and six clerks have been killed in connection to their work, the group notes. Cars being reinforced with armor by Gadi Mokotov's company ETTS Blindajes in Mexico City. Evelio Contreras/CNN A controversial vote One of the last acts of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2024 was to pass a constitutional reform mandating that all judges in the country be elected by direct vote – a radical shift from the system of internal appointments that had populated most of Mexico's judiciary until then. The vote – seen by supporters as an effort to guarantee judges' autonomy and impartiality – has been embraced by Lopez Obrador's successor and protege, President Claudia Sheinbaum. On Sunday, June 1, thousands of candidates will be competing for the 881 seats up for grabs. César Gutiérrez Priego, a criminal lawyer in Mexico City running for a seat on the country's Supreme Court, told CNN he's been campaigning this spring with a bulletproof vest under his suit. César Gutiérrez Priego at home in Mexico City. Evelio Contreras/CNN Priego's protective vest, which he's worn everyday under his clothes as he campaigns for a seat on Mexico's Supreme Court. Evelio Contreras/CNN 'It doesn't smell very good. But it's something that I needed to do because I have to protect myself. I have two kids and I don't want to just be another number,' he says of the vest, which he's been wearing for two months on the campaign trail. Priego is no stranger to the potential for violence and corruption in Mexican politics – he decided to study law when he was in his 20s, after seeing his high-ranking military father, Mexico's then-drug czar, imprisoned on what he says were false charges. Across the country, trust in the justice system has been broken over and over. Judges are widely perceived as among the most corrupt officials in the country, and many high-profile cases have never been concluded. In 2022, just 16 percent of criminal investigations overall were resolved, according to Human Rights Watch. Critics argue that addressing these issues requires far more profound change – including repressing organized crime and addressing corruption at the prosecutorial level and in government – than this week's judicial vote can address. Both the Biden and Trump administrations in the US have warned against the judicial vote, voicing concern that making judges run for election could further expose them to political interests and to potential corruption or intimidation by organized crime groups. Still, Priego says he's willing to try the new system – and to face the personal risk to his own life – for a shot at a seat on the highest bench in the country. 'In Mexico, we have a big trouble here in our country. And what is that trouble? It's that criminals take control of some places, some institutions, and one of those institutions is the justice system. And I believe if we change that, we can make the change that really helps people, because if you make the criminals go to jail, you can end impunity,' Priego tells CNN. Ending impunity, everyone agrees, is long overdue in the country – though not everyone agrees on how to get there. In his Mexico City garage, Mokotov sees daily evidence of the crisis, including a fast-growing number of first-time clients asking for his services: women looking to add bulletproof armor to humble commuter cars. It's a request that leaves even him a bit disturbed, he says. 'It's not nice to see moms coming here saying 'I need to protect my kids to go to school.' They're afraid for the lives of their kids.'
