S.W.A.T. Season 9: Renewal status, release date speculation and everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on July 18, 2025, 20:30 IST Last updated July 18, 2025, 20:04 IST If you're a fan of S.W.A.T., the CBS cop drama starring Shemar Moore as the tough-but-fair Sergeant Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson, you're probably wondering what's next after the wild ride of Season 8. The show's been a rollercoaster, dodging cancellations before, but the latest news has fans on edge. So, is S.W.A.T. coming back for Season 9? Here's everything we know so far. Renewal Status: Is S.W.A.T. Season 9 Happening? Right now, S.W.A.T. is not renewed for a ninth season. CBS pulled the plug in March 2025, marking the show's third cancellation since it started in 2017. Yep, third. This show's been through more breakups and makeups than a soap opera couple. Back in 2023, after Season 6, CBS canceled it, only for fans and Shemar Moore to rally hard enough to bring it back for Season 7. Then, in April 2024, CBS gave it a Season 8 greenlight, calling it the 'final season.' But when the axe fell again this year, it stung. There's still a sliver of hope, though. Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind S.W.A.T. , is actively shopping the show to other networks and streaming platforms. Shemar Moore took to Instagram in March, practically begging Netflix or someone else to pick it up, saying, 'We've got stories left to tell, and fans who deserve more.' A petition to save the show has racked up about 80,000 signatures, showing the fanbase isn't giving up. But as of now, no one's stepped up to save the day. No Netflix, no Paramount+, no anybody. Still, the fact that Sony's trying keeps the door cracked open. When Could S.W.A.T. Season 9 Come Out? Since there's no renewal, there's no official release date for Season 9. But let's play the guessing game. If, say, Netflix or another platform swoops in by late 2025, production would need time to ramp up. S.W.A.T. usually premiered in the fall—October or November—for most of its run, with Season 8 hitting screens on October 18, 2024. Filming a season typically takes 6-8 months, plus a few months for pre- and post-production. So, if a miracle happens and Season 9 gets greenlit soon, we're looking at a release in fall 2026, maybe September or October. If a streamer like Netflix picks it up, they might go for a shorter season (10-13 episodes instead of 22), which could speed things up to, say, summer 2026. But this is all just me crunching numbers based on how TV works—no promises, since nothing's confirmed. S.W.A.T. Season 9 Expected Cast If S.W.A.T. gets a ninth season, we'd expect the Season 8 crew to return, assuming they're available. That includes: Shemar Moore as Hondo Harrelson, the heart and soul of the show. as Hondo Harrelson, the heart and soul of the show. Jay Harrington as Deacon Kay, the veteran with a big heart. as Deacon Kay, the veteran with a big heart. David Lim as Victor Tan, the team's sharpshooter. as Victor Tan, the team's sharpshooter. Anna Enger Ritch as Zoe Powell, the tough-as-nails officer. as Zoe Powell, the tough-as-nails officer. Niko Pepaj as Miguel 'Miko' Alfaro, the newer recruit. as Miguel 'Miko' Alfaro, the newer recruit. Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Hicks, the boss. as Commander Hicks, the boss. Annie Ilonzeh as Devin Gamble, the team's latest addition. What Would Season 9 Be About? The Season 8 finale, 'Return to Base,' aired on May 16, 2025, and left us hanging. Without spoiling too much, the two-parter had Hondo, Victor Tan, and Zoe Powell dealing with a crew of Russian mercenaries wreaking havoc in L.A. with hidden bombs. The episode ended with a big 'uh-oh' moment—a target on our heroes' backs they don't even know about. If Season 9 happens, it'd probably kick off resolving that mess, with the 20-Squad facing new threats and personal drama. The show's always mixed gritty action with real-world issues like racism, loyalty, and family, so expect more of that. Annie Ilonzeh, who plays Devin Gamble, teased in an interview that there are 'tons of stories left to explore' for the team. Maybe we'd see Hondo grappling with leadership challenges or Tan and Powell's arcs getting deeper. The writers have never been shy about throwing curveballs, so who knows what else they'd cook up? Shemar Moore Fights to Keep 20-Squad Together in the Series Finale of 'S.W.A.T.'
This season on S.W.A.T., it's been really hard for Hondo Harrelson (Shemar Moore) to keep his team intact, especially because Deputy Chief Leticia Bennett (Merrin Dungey) has been gunning for Devin Gamble ( Annie Ilonzeh) because she comes from a family of criminals even though she's cut ties with her family and is an excellent cop. But Bennett was really using Gamble as an excuse to get Robert Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit) out as commander of SWAT because he got her husband fired from his warden job. The fact that Hicks stood up for Hondo's decision to bring Gamble back from Oakland to make her a part of 20-Squad gave her ammunition. But as we now know, just as Hicks was going to resign from the LAPD after Bennett got him transferred to a new department, she learned he had been telling the truth about the fact that her husband was a crook. Then, Hicks managed to save her life, which was in jeopardy from someone her husband had done wrong, so Bennett tore up Hicks' resignation letter and he was back in charge of SWAT. One problem solved. 🎬 🎬 But Bennett's decision to use Gamble as she had, made her past an open book to 20-Squad and it took her awhile to win over the team – Tan (David Lim), Zoe Powell (Anna Enger Ritch) and Miko Alfaro (Niko Pepaj). Deacon (Jay Harrington) never had a problem with her as he trusted Hondo's judgment, once they got past her background and focused on the job. But in tonight's 'Ride or Die' episode, Gamble's background came into play again. 'Ride or Die' has SWAT chasing an auto carrier truck hijacked by a high-speed crew and carrying a multi-million-dollar car that was formerly owned by a drug kingpin. When SWAT caught up with the truck, Hondo encountered a ghost from his past – a violent car thief named Torque Vaughn, thought to be long-dead, who escaped. The search for Torque and his team continued as the bad guys were trying to locate a $60 million car that was going to set them up for life. But then Gamble was thrust into a personal crisis when her twin brother, Leon (Nick Creegan), became entangled with Torque. Related: Get an Exclusive Sneak Peek of Shemar Moore in the Action-Packed Series Finale In the second episode, 'Return to Base,' Gamble learned that her brother had lied to her and Hondo about his involvement with Torque, and he was in possession of one of the cars that Torque's team had stolen. Instead of arresting him, Gamble walked away, which meant she chose her family over the job. She went to see Hondo, who couldn't forgive her. He had fought so hard to convince everyone she was a straight shooter that her choice to put family first stung him and he accepted her letter of transfer back to Oakland. However, later in the episode, a violent crew of ex-pat Russian mercenaries holds Los Angeles hostage after planting hundreds of hidden explosives across the city in a bid to extort the release of their brutal leader, Dmitri Rykov. When Rykov is brought to SWAT for safekeeping, SWAT HQ comes under attack. Gamble is there to clear out her locker when the attack takes place, and she suits up to help bring them down. Related: It takes Hicks speaking to Hondo about Gamble to see the error of his ways in his thinking about her decision not to arrest her brother and he reinstates her as a member of 20-Squad, which makes Powell and Alfaro especially happy. The family is back together. Even Tan, who accepted a job as a liaison to the mayor at Deacon's urging, is still able to head out on missions. One nice final touch was that each member of 20-Squad received a gift from Deacon. They had been ragging him all episode about why he didn't spend some of the bonus money he received from the large contract he won for his security business. He explained that he paid off the house and set up college funds for his kids, but there wasn't anything he wanted. But when he thought about it after Tan reminded him that as SWAT officers, they were always running on borrowed time, he bought them all expensive watches with the engraving on the back: 20-Squad Stay Liquid. Then the team got a call about a robbery and they all suit up to go save the city. As they walk out to the armored rescue vehicle, they all touch the insignia on the wall for luck. All eight seasons of S.W.A.T. are available for streaming on Paramount+.

S.W.A.T. may have concluded its run on CBS after eight seasons, but Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson's story is far from over. Shemar Moore is set to reprise his role in a new spinoff series, S.W.A.T. EXILES, Sony Pictures Television announced on Sunday. 'After a high-profile mission goes sideways, [Hondo] is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits,' reads Sony's official logline. 'Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.' More from TVLine Cancelled S.W.A.T.'s Finale Will Leave You 'Wanting So Much More,' Says Cast S.W.A.T. Cancelled: Shemar Moore Says CBS Made Wrong Choice, Asks Netflix, NBC, Fox and ABC to Consider Season 9 S.W.A.T. Cancelled (for a Third Time) at CBS - 'It's Heartbreaking News,' Says Showrunner Production on the spinoff's 10-episode first season is set to begin this summer in Los Angeles, with Jason Ning serving as showrunner. It's not yet attached to a network or streaming service. 'My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable,' Moore says in a statement. 'We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. 'It's an incredible honor to carry forward the legacy of a show that fans around the world have come to love. Working with Shemar Moore, who defines what it means to be a leading man, and introducing a new generation of characters into this world is a dream.' As any fan can attest, it's been a wild couple of years for this franchise. CBS first cancelled S.W.A.T. in May 2023 after six seasons, only for the network to reverse that decision just a few days later. At the time, this was billed as S.W.A.T.'s seventh and 'final' season, but another surprise came in April 2024 when CBS announced that it was bringing S.W.A.T. back for Season 8. S.W.A.T. aired its series finale (for real this time!) on Friday, May 16. 'It will make you not want this show to end,' cast member Anna Enger Ritch told TVLine ahead of the episode's airing. 'You'll want to keep watching what happens. There are so many avenues and directions to go, so many stories to tell, so many personal things. It will leave you wanting so much more.'
