Woman drives on wrong side of H-1 Freeway, in critical condition
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A woman is in critical condition following an early morning crash on the H-1 Freeway, just west of the Punahou Street overpass. The crash happened around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 20, and initiated a full shutdown of the H-1 westbound. Lanes have since been reopened just after 9 a.m. How can you avoid a traffic collision? According to the Honolulu Police Department, the 25-year-old female was driving on the wrong side of the freeway. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said she collided head-on with a 77-year-old male who was driving an 18-wheeler. HPD said he was driving in the #2 lane. Paramedics arrived and 'administered life-saving treatment' to the woman before bringing her to the hospital for critical head and multisystem trauma injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler was also treated and brought to the hospital for serious shoulder injuries. Man arrested for terroristic threatening in Honolulu
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A man has been arrested following a terroristic threatening incident in Honolulu. Trio arrested, charged for Hawaiʻi Island crime spree On Fridqy, June 13, the Honolulu Police Department took to social media to say that they had arrested a male around 12:30 p.m. on Aleka Street after threatening a 29-year-old woman with a knife. HPD said the woman was walking in front of the Honolulu District Court when the male lunged at her with a knife. The woman was able to get away without any injuries. Oahu's traffic deaths in 2025 have doubled compared to the same time last year
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The '' are underway, and Oahu just saw its . Around this time in June 2024, there had been only 14 traffic deaths. The Honolulu Police Department reported several crashes over the weekend of June 7 and June 8, with many incidents leading to serious or critical injuries — and crashes continued into the week, with three new deaths reported between June 6 and June 9. 23-year-old motorcyclist killed in crash on Pali Highway HPD reported on Friday, June 6, after a motorcyclist crashed on the Pali Highway. On June 7, a 27-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead following a ; he was Oahu's 32nd traffic death of 2025. On June 8, three separate crashes led to several people being taken to the hospital. Germain Salim with the Department of Transportation Services (DTS) told KHON2 that roughly 40% of traffic fatalities in 2025 (up to May 30) have been pedestrians. Most of those pedestrians are elderly men, Salim said. Salim reminded drivers that it's illegal to hold a cell phone or be on one while driving. She also said it's illegal to park in front of or behind a crosswalk or corner. 'On our side, we're trying to… create better zones for sidewalks and for vehicles to be able to see ahead, behind,' Salim said. 'We're trying to improve our intersections, we're working with our state partners at the Department of Transportation, but… the main thing right now is we've got to slow down.' Salim also said that the city has been working on its , which was implemented in late 2024 and aims to have zero traffic fatalities by the year 2040. 'It's a huge commitment, and it's really the only goal we could aim for because we cannot say that any number is OK,' Salim said. Early morning vehicle collisions hospitalize two
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Two separate early morning vehicle collisions have left two men in critical condition: one in ʻAiea and another in Moʻiliʻili. The first incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. on June 8 on Kamehameha Highway in ʻAiea. According to the Honolulu Police Department, a 54-year-old male moped driver was traveling eastbound on the highway. Popular local restaurant Side Street Inn heading West Police say the man lost control, struck the left curb on the center median, hit a chain-link fence and was ejected onto the roadway. The moped operator was taken to the hospital in critical condition by Emergency Medical Services. He was not wearing a helmet and alcohol seems to have contributed to the incident, police said. Hours later, around 3 a.m., a vehicle struck a pedestrian on S. King Street in Moʻiliʻili. According to HPD, a male pedestrian was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk with the right of way when he was struck by a vehicle. After striking the pedestrian, the motorist lost control and struck a parked, empty vehicle, according to police. Officials also say that vehicle was pushed into another parked, empty vehicle, and the driver fled the driver's car was found shortly after the collision abandoned at the intersection of Waialae Avenue and Palolo Avenue. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition. HPD officials believe that speed is a contributing factor to the incident. The identities of the driver and the pedestrian are unknown. Honolulu police investigate alleged child abuse after viral video
Honolulu police said they have opened an investigation into a case of alleged child abuse after a video went viral on social media. On Thursday evening, a witness scrolling through Instagram saw a post of a woman allegedly assaulting a girl. The witness was able to identify the woman and child and called 911. The Honolulu Police Department said today that officers have identified a 34-year-old woman as the child's mother, and taken her two children – an 11-year-old, autistic girl and a 3-year-old boy—into police custody and transferred them to Child Welfare Services. The viral post, shared on @hhnewz, asked, 'What would you do in this situation if you saw this ??' as a woman seated in a car at Kapolei Commons appears to yank the child by her hair so that she falls onto her knees on the pavement in a parking lot, in front of an open car door. HPD's strategic enforcement detail located the mother, along with the child and her brother, at about 10 a.m. today in the Kapolei area. Police said the Honolulu Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, Domestic Violence Section, have been notified, and are working to pursue charges against the mother. No arrests have been made, pending the ongoing investigation. 'The Honolulu Police Department takes abuse allegations seriously and urges the public to report incidents by calling 911 or visiting any police station, open 24 /7, ' HPD officials said in a social media post.
