Gloriavale leader goes on trial on multiple charges of indecent assault

Photo: RNZ / Nate McKinnon Gloriavale leader Howard Temple will go on trial in Greymouth today on charges of sexual offending against girls for more than 20 years. The 85-year-old faces 14 charges of indecent assault and 13 charges of doing an indecent act. The complainants were aged between nine and 20 at the time of the alleged offending, between 1998 and 2022. According to court documents, 21 of the charges are representative, meaning multiple offences of the same type are alleged to have been committed in similar circumstances. Temple first appeared in court in July 2023 . He pleaded not guilty to all charges in August of that year and elected a judge-alone trial. Temple, a former US naval engineer, took up the mantle of Overseeing Shepherd at the West Coast Christan community after the death of founder Hopeful Christian in 2018. HR 7pm, Sky Nature If you're in the market for both dazzling visuals and inane analysis, this nature series is one part David Attenborough, two parts Keith Lemon's Celebrity Juice. It zooms in on nature's favourite sidekicks this week – including 'the John and Yoko of the ocean', and a creature with a 'titanic appetite for crap'. Hannah J Davies 9pm, BBC Two Australian preacher Neville Cooper – who renamed himself Hopeful Christian – founded religious cult Gloriavale in New Zealand more than 50 years ago. He was convicted and jailed on three charges of indecent sexual assault in 1995. Today, Gloriavale is still home to 650 people cut off from society. This three-part documentary speaks to former and existing members to get gob-smacking insight. Hollie Richardson 9pm, Sky Documentaries In the final part of this nostalgic documentary series, the boys of Boyzone reunite in 2007, after seven years apart. The old tensions quickly dissolve, and their comeback has got them feeling like their best selves – but tragedy, and some truly touching scenes, are on the horizon with the shocking news of the death of Stephen Gately. Nicole Vassell 9.05pm, BBC One The wonderful period drama about Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra continues, and an unwell Cassy (Keeley Hawes) is haunted by more complicated wedding proposals from their younger years. That's not the only heartache, as she also recalls having to leave their beloved family home. But there are happier moments to be found in the sisters' loving relationship. HR 10pm, Channel 4 Jack Rooke's filthy but heartfelt university sitcom is, sadly, almost over. A penultimate double bill sees the gang struggle with parties, charity shops, unexpected parental visits and essay crises in the library, but the underlying problem remains the same: what on earth are they going to do with their lives as adults? Jack Seale Women's Super League Football: Arsenal v Tottenham, 12.15pm, BBC Two At Emirates Stadium. Premiership Football: Liverpool v Wolves, 2pm, Sky Sports Main Event At Anfield.
