Shaza Hotels strengthens leadership excellence with emotional intelligence workshop for corporate team

Dubai, UAE – In line with its ongoing commitment to fostering people-centric leadership and enhancing organisational excellence, Shaza Hotels recently conducted a dedicated learning and development session for its corporate leadership team on 'Emotional Intelligence (EQ) for Hospitality Leaders.' The workshop, held earlier this month in Dubai reflects Shaza's recognition of the evolving demands placed on leaders in today's hospitality landscape. With a firm belief that effective leadership begins with self-awareness, empathy, and purpose, Shaza Hotels continuously invests in equipping its teams with the tools needed to lead with clarity, authenticity, and resilience. Facilitated by industry experts from DeANTS – Your Outsourced Learning & Development Department, the programme offered practical, real-world insights into the application of emotional intelligence within the hospitality sector. Covering a broad spectrum of leadership competencies, the session guided participants through topics including understanding individual brain talent profiles, leveraging emotional literacy for self-regulation, and aligning noble KPIs with personal values to ensure a purpose-driven leadership approach. The highly interactive session was designed to help leaders enhance their ability to connect with their teams, navigate change with confidence, and make thoughtful decisions that positively impact both people and performance. These qualities are deeply aligned with Shaza's organisational values, which prioritise the human essence of leadership in creating meaningful guest and colleague experiences. John Torode is a decent chap and I stand by him

MasterChef. It's a word close to my heart. It was created by a hero of mine, a TV visionary. It's a fixed star in the TV firmament and, like it or not, it's a solid part of the British food scene. Many who now run restaurants came through the show. Thousands seek to be on it so they can either get into hospitality or have their careers supercharged by it. And I'm a critic on it. I've been popping up on the quarter-final stages of the cooking competition for some two decades and have got to know the show even better, soul-enrichingly so, having been a contestant on it. It breaks my heart that it is in the news for all the wrong reasons. While it's juicy gossip for many – and believe me when I tell you that everyone who I see at the moment raises the question before we've shaken hands, hugged or kissed – to me it is just achingly sad. The news that John Torode has left the show, just days after the confirmed exit of Gregg Wallace, in a decidedly confused fog of an alleged remark and denial is particularly sad. He is one of the nicest, most charming, well-informed and decent TV presenters it has been my pleasure to appear on the box with. Although saying nice things about people who have allegations around their necks is a dangerous business. A fellow might have slaughtered half a dozen folk but he was jolly nice to me, Guv. I'll stand by that decent chap. And I'll also say the following of the show and the people who work for it. While I fully appreciate and have read carefully the allegations made against Gregg and those that were upheld in the reports commissioned by the show's makers Banijay, I'll stick my neck out and say I have never worked in a place of such courtesy, kindness, respect and care. And this was particularly the case when I was a contestant on the show. From the moment I was booked producers and assistant producers, runners and food economists held my hand and gave me everything I needed to do the job. In my case it meant knocking out a chicken Kyiv and peas, rabbit in a mustard sauce with green beans and potato fondant and a self-saucing chocolate pud. Up until the cameras rolled, that is. Then I was on my own. That others who have appeared or worked on the show saw another side I would not for a moment challenge. But in the same way I once gave a character witness to a neighbour of mine who knocked a chap out in the pub, I'm only too willing to tell you what my experience has been in the light of other very different stories. And the kindness on set stems from the show's creator, Franc Roddam, a wise, canny and brilliant Geordie. Having made the movie Quadrophenia he used his gravitas in the TV world to pitch a show that challenged what he saw as a pejorative view of British food, particularly from his friends in Hollywood, the likes of Mel Brooks, who teased him about how awful it was. MasterChef, which began in 1990, would spotlight the talent, the amateur talent, in homes across the UK. And any comments made by presenters on the show would be solely about the dishes. It's a rule Franc and his team insist upon, as the shows are made in different formats across the world – it's been adapted and reproduced in 60 countries, and watched by 300 million people. You don't criticise the cook, only what they cook. And that kindness, in my experience, pervades the sets. And it has done so in all the various studios I've filmed in, from Hackney, Wandsworth and east London to the swanky new studios in Birmingham. Over the years I've witnessed great disasters – I shan't forget Wayne Sleep's green goddess sauce and the ruination of his fish, Mel Sykes's very late and appalling risotto or Rylan Clark's trio of lavender (don't ask, I don't want to go back there). But I also saw the making of Thomasina Miers – now one of the country's most respected restaurateurs and the founder of the Wahaca chain – and of chefs such as Simon Wood, Dhruv Baker, Olivia Burt, Louise Lyons Macleod and Gaston Savina. Many of whom have become great friends, some of whom have even cooked in my converted shed at home for my Sitwell Supper Club. It's a lovely journey to witness: a dish in a studio, the TV drama, then the spectacle of them cooking in my own kitchen for the locals of West Somerset. I hope, I believe, I know (surely!) that this show will go on, will weather this storm and will thrive with new presenters as it thrives in new formats in so many countries across the world. At some point (I assumed it would be around 20 years ago, after my first appearance), I won't get the call-up and then I'll thank my lucky stars for the opportunities that it's given me. But today I feel for the many people who work so hard on the show, a relentless conveyor belt, from studio to edit suite, month in month out, not least because of all the episodes they've recorded in recent months, many of which I've taken part in, which may now never see the light of day. I know it's only a show about food, but today modern Britain can be proudly identified by its food culture and MasterChef so often reflects the best of that. OK, for juicy entertainment, with a little help from me, it can also highlight food culture at its most overblown and misconceived worst. But that's what's important. The food on the plate. I hope soon that we can all get back to focusing on that and the human drama of the contestants, the real stars, whose lives are so often changed for the better by this extraordinarily brilliant TV show.

The delivery app UberEats has launched its 2025 restaurant of the year awards and has announced the nominees from London. Social Dhaba, Lahore Karahi and L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele are among the local favourites who have made the shortlist for London, UberEats revealed. Each year, the brand hosts a competition for London restaurants who are able to compete for a £100,000 prize. This year's contest also sees the introduction of a new award spotlighting hospitality's rising stars under the age of 27. The judging panel includes the famed entrepreneur Levi Roots, Irish celebrity chef Clodagh McKenna, and 2024 winner Natty Crutchfield of the Caribbean concept Natty's Jerk. Now in its fourth year, the awards invite the public to nominate their favourite local restaurants via a dedicated website and more than 130 restaurants are vying for the top spot in 2025. The company's Matthew Price said: 'We're not just celebrating restaurants, we're investing in the future of food. The new next gen trailblazer award is a bold step in backing the young innovators who are rewriting the rules of hospitality'. As well as the top prize, all finalists win £5,000 to invest in their business. An awards ceremony at the Outernet in London will be announced soon. 'Winning Restaurant of the Year was life-changing,' said Crutchfield. 'We've grown faster than we ever imagined, and we're proud to be part of a community that supports independent businesses.'
