Telangana leads nation in providing housing for the poor: Minister Ponguleti

Hyderabad, June 30 (UNI) Telangana is emerging as a national leader in providing housing for the poor through the ambitious Indiramma Housing Scheme, said State Revenue, Housing and Information & Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy today. Reviewing the progress of the scheme with officials, Minister Ponguleti stated that no other government in the country has taken up house construction for the poor at a unit cost of Rs 5 lakh. He emphasised that houses are being constructed for all eligible individuals in the state, regardless of whether they are covered under central schemes, an official statement said. 'To empower the poor and ensure dignified living, the Indiramma government is building homes for all, with a vision to eliminate huts in the state,' the Minister said. He credited Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's leadership and commitment to the welfare of the underprivileged for the rapid progress of the housing initiative. So far, three lakh houses have been sanctioned across Telangana, with 1.23 lakh currently under various stages of construction. The government has set a target to build 4.5 lakh Indiramma houses this year, at a cost of Rs 22,500 crore, covering 3,500 houses in each Assembly constituency. To ease the burden on beneficiaries, the government is also providing 40 metric tons of sand free of cost for each house. Minister Ponguleti added that funds for the construction are being deposited directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries every Monday, ensuring transparency and timeliness. He urged officials to accelerate efforts in urban areas, directing them to identify suitable land and prepare action plans for cities including Hyderabad, Warangal, Mahabubnagar, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, and Nalgonda. The Minister also stressed the need for improved performance in some districts in both sanctioning and executing the housing projects. 'Indiramma houses are not just structures—they are a symbol of dignity, stability, and a new beginning for thousands of families,' Ponguleti added. UNI VV RN
