Texans QB C.J. Stroud jokingly takes jab at Bears QB Caleb Williams for Week 2 comments

Caleb Williams and C.J. Stroud haven't seen each other since Week 2, when the Houston Texans' second-year quarterback passed on some words of wisdom over to his Chicago Bears' counterpart. People, as per usual, took it out of context and made it a bigger deal because of the age gap. After all, Stroud was only one year into his NFL tenure and yet some assumed he was talking down to the quarterback who beat him out for the Heisman Trophy in 2022. For the first time since Stroud told Williams to "stop taking so many hits," the two met in public during a panel session hosted by the Manning brothers at the Fanatics Fest in New York City on Saturday. When asked if the third-year quarterback had any advice for the Bears' top pick last season, Stroud cracked with a smile at the crowd. 'I don't know if Caleb likes my advice," Stroud joked, to which Williams laughed. Stroud might not have much room to talk after being sacked 52 times, but he still wasn't the league's most hit quarterback. That title belongs to Williams, who was sacked 68 times over 17 games. Although a poor offensive line took much of the blame, the former No. 1 overall often needed to get rid of the ball, which is what Stroud meant after a Week 2 win on Sunday Night Football. At the moment, Williams put it off. He had just thrown two late picks that cemented a 2-0 start for the Texans and cost the Bears a promising start. After eight months and a full offseason running the show for Ben Johnson's revamped offensive system two young franchise quarterbacks can now laugh about the famous intercations. Also, Stroud can say he was right for giving the advice since it led to the firing of a coach and a record-setting number of hits in Bears' history against a quarterback.

Projections for Houston Texans' offense in 2025

Projections for Houston Texans' offense in 2025 There are high expectations surrounding the Houston Texans heading into the 2025 season, where the offense has added a slew of new faces to help take the unit to the next level. That starts with the subtraction of five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was shipped off to the Washington Commanders for four future draft picks. In his place, Houston inked Cam Robinson to a one-year deal and drafted Minnesota offensive tackle Tay Ersery in the second round via a trade up. While C.J. Stroud had an encouraging (but rather underwhelming production-wise) second season, he's barely tapped into his potential, which new offensive coordinator Nick Caley will look to develop. The Texans have a plethora of weapons on offense, including running backs Joe Mixon and Nick Chubb, wide receivers Nico Collins, Christian Kirk and rookie Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins, as well as tight ends Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover. Houston also improved its offensive line with Tytus Howard shifting inside to guard and Blake Fisher taking over as the full-time right tackle. Cole Popovich, the Texans' offensive line coach, also brought in a former Troy standout with Jake Andrews, while veteran lineman Laken Tomlinson hopes to hold down the left guard spot long-term. ESPN's Mike Clay recently shared his 2025 projections, including for the Texans offensive skill players. Here's a look: Quarterbacks C.J. Houston Texans' most impactful 2025 offseason move

Houston Texans' most impactful 2025 offseason move The Houston Texans had an impactful offseason, which has the back-to-back AFC South winners in position to be successful for the long-term future. Despite winning 20 games with Bobby Slowik as the offensive coordinator, Houston knew it needed a chance after losing back-to-back divisional round matchups. DeMeco Ryans fired his former colleague this offseason and landed Los Angeles Rams' pass-game coordinator Nick Caley to serve as a first-time play-caller. While Caley might not have been an offensive coordinator before, his energy, spark and attentiveness have won over multiple Texans' players. Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins called Caley a 'pro' while C.J. Stroud said his new OC has 'laid back personality' but cares about the little details. CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan named the best offseason move by each AFC team, and while Houston had some impactful additions, nothing else came close to the hiring of Caley as offensive coordinator. "The Texans were busy this offseason, reshaping their offensive line and adding a number of new faces to the receiver room. However, the best addition they made came on the coaching staff with the hiring of Nick Caley as their newest offensive coordinator," Sullivan wrote. "After Bobby Slowik fizzled, Caley comes to town with a tremendous résumé. The 42-year-old spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams under Sean McVay, serving as the tight ends coach and passing game coordinator. Before that, Caley rose through the NFL ranks working under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots, winning two Super Bowls in the process. His arrival should help turn the tide of a Texans offense that stalled out far too many times last season." Make no mistake, Caley was brought to Houston to elevate Stroud's persona and creatre a more dynamic passing attack after a woeful finish in 2024. He's also tasked with turning around an offensive line that allowed 54 sacks, including 52 against a quarterback with a sophomore slump. It's only the offseason, but Caley's impact is already being felt in the locker room, and the hope is the results on the field follow suit with more than 10 wins and a division tilte this fall.

Texans RB Nick Chubb ready to become 'great together' with Joe Mixon

Texans RB Nick Chubb ready to become 'great together' with Joe Mixon Nick Chubb is excited to call Joe Mixon a teammate in Houston. After watching his career revival last season as the Houston Texans' lead running back, who wouldn't be excited to see similar results after a lost campaign in Cleveland? Chubb, who inked a one-year deal worth $2.5 million earlier this week, will likely serve as the secondary runner behind Mixon to begin his career. Mixon is expected to be fully healthy by the time the season rolls around, but he missed three games during the 2024 regular season, meaning Chubb could see significant reps. After averaging 3.3 yards per play last season in eight games, Chubb is just looking to get back to a stable situation. Splitting carries with an option coming off a 1,000-yard campaign on a championship-caliber team might be a way to help the former Pro Bowler regain his confidence. "I think we're great together," Chubb said of Mixon during Texans minicamp Wednesday. "He's a bigger guy. You know, tall, explosive, he runs super hard, and I do the same thing. So, I think it'll be us, kind of doing it back-to-back against other defenses." Chubb, a 2018 second-round pick out of Georgia, ranks third on the Browns' career rushing list (6,843 yards) after spending the first seven years of his career in Cleveland. Much like the four-time Pro Bowler in the other major city of Ohio, Mixon spent seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, helping them reach the Super Bowl in 2021. Not only did Chubb remember Mixon from his time in Cincinnati, but the two were in the same recruiting class back in 2014, where at one point, he thought they'd be teammates. "He should have come to Georgia, by the way. He went to Cincinnati. I played against him twice a year. And I was always afraid he would take over the game with his ability. You know, he runs super hard. And so, I think both of us have the same intangibles. It'll be tough for defense to stop.' The Texans open the

Texans QB C.J. Stroud downplays shoulder injury after throwing at minicamp

Texans QB C.J. Stroud downplays shoulder injury after throwing at minicamp C.J. Stroud is fine entering the second day of minicamp. He made it clear after throwing during the early stages of team drills on Tuesday afternoon. The Houston Texans' third-year quarterback downplayed his limited participation during drills last week at voluntary OTAs due to general soreness in his shoulder. Stroud threw passes at practice for the first time with media in attendance after not throwing through the first two weeks of OTAs. "I was already throwing before you guys got to see me out there, pretty normally, I think y'all don't have much to talk about so everything is blown up," Stroud said ater practice. Stroud, who was limited during the second half of minicamp, blamed some of the soreness on his aggressive offseason in which he aimed to get stronger while learning the ins and out of Nick Caley's offense. After practice, the Pro Bowler said he wasn't worried about the injury as he expects occasional soreness since it comes with playing the position. When asked if he underwent any procedure during the offseason, Stroud confirmed he was fully healthy and avoided a trip to the medical staff. "I never thought too much of it. It's not that big of [a deal]," Stroud said. "I'm fine. It's not as bad as people making it seem." The Texans are hoping to get a revamped version of Stroud after a drop-off in 2024. Houston won the division and finished with a 10-7 record, but the defense did most of the heavy lifting, totaling a franchise record 46 sacks. While Stroud wants to be at practice, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans head coach elected to hold him out of drills. If Stroud had it his way, he would have been throwing last week. "It's important for me to just make sure we're protecting him," Ryans said. "To make sure we know what's best for C.J. and not really worry about the outside opinions. Nobody knows the information about our players more than me." The Texans return to practice on Wednesday morning before the end of minicamp.
