‘Full House' child star in a ‘constant process of recovery' after finding fame at young age
Everywhere Blake McIver Ewing looks, he's reminded of his time on 'Full House.' The actor, 40, got candid about playing Michelle Tanner's (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) friend, Derek Boyd, on the sitcom, which ran for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995. While on Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber's 'Full House' rewatch podcast, 'How Rude, Tanneritos,' on June 26, Ewing said he is most remembered for his 'Yankee Doodle Boy' performance from season six, episode eight, titled 'The Play's The Thing.' 'This is the time of year where I start to hunker down like a Cold War bunker,' he joked. 'Tis the season. The memes start coming.' Advertisement 9 Yankee Doddle Boy performance. All kidding aside, Ewing said, 'It is an honor, and I'm glad that it still brings people joy.' Reflecting on playing Derek, the star noted he had 'a lot of similarities' to his character. 'I was very, very precocious and very able to speak my mind,' he confessed, expressing that they were both 'bossy.' Although the Hollywood vet has fond memories from his time on 'Full House,' being a child star has left him a 'Recovering Child Actor,' as noted in his Instagram bio. Ewing starred in a slew of projects after his stint on 'Full House,' including playing Waldo in the 1994 classic 'The Little Rascals' and voicing Eugene in 2002's 'Hey Arnold! The Movie,' as well as starring in TV shows like 2001's 'Adventures in Odyssey.' 'I feel like we're all in recovery always,' Ewing shared with his former co-stars. 'It's an annoying process. People ask me about it all the time, and I'm like, 'No. It's not a negative thing. It's just like there's a constant process of recovery.'' Ewing also considered himself 'lucky' that his parents, actress Susan McIver and director Bill Ewing, didn't push him to be an actor, adding that he 'wanted to do it.' 'They were like, 'Well, if you're gonna do it, just don't embarrass us. At least be good at it.'' 'But it's so funny because you become a teenager, you become an adolescent, and it doesn't matter. There is still a life learning curve,' said Ewing. 'And it's really more about that. It's like we recover in our own way.' Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner, echoed her former co-star's sentiments, sharing that 'there's a whole extra layer of getting through that thing of being known as something [as] a child.' 9 Blake McIver Ewing performs on stage. Sweetin continued while noting that as a teen, you're 'really trying to figure out who you are anyway,' but being a child star adds extra 'layers.' 'Absolutely,' Ewing agreed. 'It is an identity crisis of a sort. And I always try to explain to people… you have your mid-career crisis at 18.' From Barber's perspective, child actors from the '90s have their 'own language' and are 'like one big fraternity.' Advertisement 9 Blake McIver Ewing attends Family Equality Council's Impact Awards. Ewing reprised his role as Derek on 'Fuller House,' which ran from 2016 to 2020. He starred in the series finale, Season 5 episode 18, titled 'Our Very Last Show, Again.' 'When we were doing 'Fuller House,' I was always thinking about, 'Where is Derek?'' he said. 'I hope he's teaching high school theater in San Francisco.' Jodie Sweetin says Dave Coulier sent 'horrifying' 'Full House' AI image to costars: 'I didn't get it'
Dave Coulier is keeping that Uncle Joey spirit alive and well in the Full House cast group chat. Jodie Sweetin revealed that Coulier likes to liven things up via group text much like his character livened things up in the Tanner household during the beloved sitcom's run in the '90s. Most recently, the comedian shared an AI-generated photo of the cast as "goths," which Sweetin told PEOPLE was "horrifying" at first. "Like, aged-down goths. And for some reason, there was a Kourtney Kardashian lookalike in there who was supposed to be Becky," she added of the character played by Lori Loughlin. 'But me and the Olsen twins were the same age, except for Mary-Kate, who actually looked like she does today." Sweetin explained that the late Bob Saget, who played beloved patriarch Danny Tanner, was also in the image depicted as Geddy Lee, the lead singer of Rush. "It was just a very, very strange thing. Dave made a joke. I didn't get it," Sweetin said, adding that she eventually understood. "I was like, 'Oh, sorry actually, the joke was great.'" The reveal that the Full House cast keeps an active group chat alive came right before several cast members reunited for iHeartRadio's How Rude, Tanneritos! Wedding Special live event. Sweetin and her podcast cohost and castmate Andrea Barber hosted the Sunday event that saw former costars Loughlin, John Stamos, Scott Weinger, and Marla Sokoloff reflect on their time on the show. The event marked one of the handful of times the show's cast members have reunited since Saget died in 2022 from head trauma after accidentally hitting his head in a Grande Lakes, Fla., hotel room. Coulier was among the stars missing from the reunion, as were Sweetin's TV sisters, Candace Cameron Bure, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. While Coulier couldn't make the live event, he has made an appearance on the How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast before. In April, he opened up to Sweetin and Barber about learning that he'd beaten stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma and that his son, Luc, and daughter-in-law, Alex, had welcomed their first child together on the very same day. "I got the good news the day the baby was born," Coulier told his former castmates. "So I heard the news and I was so excited, and then Luc called us and he said, 'Hey, the baby just was born.' And so, I mean, it was an amazing day." Coulier noted that Luc and Alex welcomed a "healthy, great little baby" named Chance Lee. "He's 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and we will see him, I think, in 12 days," he added. "Because we're in Michigan and they're out in Sacramento."The comedian also recalled feeling like he'd accidentally "killed the moment" after delivering a real stinker of a joke in the family group chat following the announcement of Chance's birth. "I said to my son — everybody was teary-eyed and everything and [was] texting when the baby was born — and I said, 'I cannot wait to see that kid's expression on his face after he pulls my finger for the first time,'" Coulier recalled. "And there was just like, no one responded. It's like, 'Okay. I killed the moment.'" Thankfully, he explained that Luc messaged him back a few minutes later, telling him, "I just got that." Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber hosted iHeartRadio's How Rude, Tanneritos! Wedding Special live event on Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Los Angeles The costars chatted with PEOPLE ahead of the event, sharing how their children fit into the Full House fold The costars appeared with John Stamos and Lori Loughlin at the live event, looking back at some of the sitcom's biggest momentsJodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber's kids aren't too impressed by their Full House fame. Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of iHeartRadio's How Rude, Tanneritos! Wedding Special live event, the costars and moms talked about how their children have reacted to their sitcom stardom. When it comes to Sweetin's two daughters — Beatrix, 14, and Zoie, 17 — she confirmed they were never interested in checking out their mom's acting roots, simply calling it "weird." Barber, who is mom to Felicity, 16, and Tate, 19, said her kids also "didn't really care," "They're just normal teenagers. They don't care what their parents do," Barber tells PEOPLE. "They were like, 'It's mom. You yell at us to go clean our room.' " Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Barber recalls a time where her son's classmates figured out she was an actress and asked him about Full House. "I showed Full House to my son when he was in second grade, because he kept going to school and the kids were like, 'Your mom's [in] Full House?'" "[He told me], 'Everyone has seen Full House, but me, Mom, why?' And so I'm like, 'Here's an episode,' but that's about it." Whenever Sweetin's kids saw it, it was because, "It was probably on Nick at Nite or something. I'm sure my mom or dad, when the kids were little, was like, 'Oh, you want to watch mom on the show?' And even at two, they were probably like, 'No.'" When it came time for the cast to reunite for Fuller House, Barber said her kids "loved coming to the live tapings on Friday nights." It gave the costars' kids a chance to connect, with Barber noting how close in age Felicity and Zoie are. "Oh my god, they loved hanging out," Sweetin agrees. "They just wanted to hang out with Michael and Soni and Elias. They didn't come to see what we did." "They were hardly ever in the audience. They were down in the schoolroom. Remember the time we were doing the scene, and I literally heard Zoie yelling in the school room in the back? And I was like, 'That's my kid,' on a tape night," she laughs. During the live show, which also featured an appearance from costars John Stamos and Lori Loughlin, the group opened up about whether they had any regrets with the original series, during which they referenced the end of the series. "I wish we had gotten a proper goodbye," Barber shared. "We didn't know we weren't coming back. We did it out of order," Stamos recalled. "The episodes where Michelle gets amnesia, which was how we ended the show, that was last to air. But we shot those first, and then the last one we shot was the one with Andrew Keegan," Loughlin explained. Stamos agreed, adding, "We didn't know... I think we found out somewhere during that week or something. They kind of said, 'Okay, well...' and that wasn't a good way to go out. But thank God we got to do Fuller House." ‘Full House' stars Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber recount their ‘awkward' Ryan Gosling selfie fail
How rude! 'Full House' stars Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber have revealed that they once tried, and failed, to snag a selfie with Ryan Gosling during a charity event in June 2017. The pair recalled the 'awkward' encounter on Tuesday's episode of their 'How Rude, Tanneritos!' podcast while discussing Dolly Parton and other celebrities they are 'obsessed' with.
