BSc Astronomy vs BTech Space Technology: Which degree launches a career in space?

('The Right Choice' is a series by The Indian Express that addresses common questions, misconceptions, and doubts surrounding undergraduate admissions. You can read the stories here.) — Rachna Arora When the countdown began for Shubhanshu Shukla's historic spaceflight, it lit a spark across India, and touching the stars didn't feel like science fiction anymore. It felt like something we could truly reach. With ISRO's missions gaining global applause and Indian names entering space history, it is no longer about watching the sky. It is about building, decoding, and being part of it. But for students fired up by this dream, there is one big question— BSc Astronomy or BTech in Space Technology: which one really takes you there? The Short Answer: Sheldon or Howard? If you have watched The Big Bang Theory, this one is easy. Sheldon is the physicist, obsessed with theories, time, and space, while Howard is the engineer, building gadgets and flying to space. That is the simplest way to see the difference. If you are a thinker, BSc Astronomy is your path. It is for those who ask why galaxies spiral, how stars die, and what lies beyond space-time. If thought experiments and cosmic puzzles thrill you, this is your orbit. Since few Indian colleges offer Astronomy at the undergraduate level, most students begin with BSc Physics or Mathematics with Computer Science, then specialise in Astrophysics or Astronomy at the postgraduate or research level. — Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru — Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai — Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Bengaluru — Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) Pune — National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA-TIFR) Pune This track often leads to research labs, observatories, or academics – the Chanakya guiding the Chandraguptas of India's space missions. If you are a builder…choose BTech in Space Technology or Aerospace Engineering. If building rockets, satellites, or navigation systems excites you, this is your launchpad. — Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) Thiruvananthapuram — IITs (Aerospace branches) — Selected NITs with specialisations — Manipal Institute of Technology, Amity University, UPES (private options) This route often leads to ISRO, DRDO, or private space companies. It is hands-on and job ready. And if you are both — explore hybrid paths. Start with BTech and specialise later in Astrophysics or Satellite Science. Or pursue BSc and pivot into computational astronomy or space instrumentation— increasingly valued in the industry. And don't forget — doctors, biotech engineers, and life scientists are part of space missions too. As India prepares for long-term space habitats, there is room for thinkers, builders, healers, and dreamers alike. (The author is a senior educator of physics at Shiv Nadar School Noida)

Aaron Rodgers reveals his heartfelt message to Steelers rookie Will Howard

Aaron Rodgers has high hopes for Steelers rookie Will Howard — and has made it his goal to make sure he surpasses expectations. On a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers was asked to share his relationship and mentorship with Howard — and this was his response: 'I pulled him aside during one of the days, and I said, 'Listen, I want to help you as much as possible, but I'm not going to overstep my bounds. If you want assistance, I'm here, buddy. I want to help you — from the playbook of my own mistakes and things I needed to learn from. That's where everything's gonna come from. If I can help you become a better player this year, that would be an incredible achievement for me.'' The Steelers rookie would then receive a glowing recommendation from Rodgers, as the four-time MVP claimed he'd love to set Howard up to be 'the guy' in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future. It has become increasingly rare to find a veteran quarterback willing to help develop a rookie QB in today's NFL, but Rodgers' relationship with Howard is likely one Steelers fans will appreciate for years to come. Spies, arrests and kissing Trump - meet the world's #1 Kim Jong Un impersonator

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Being followed home, having his house raided, getting his hair cut weekly and being deported from Vietnam are all occupational hazards for Howard X. When Kim Jong Un first entered the scene in 2011, taking over the role of supreme leader of North Korea from his father, Howard immediately thought 'he looks a lot like me'. 'Other people started saying the same thing, and I thought I should do something with this,' Howard explained, and so in 2013, using a suit he already owned he took pictures of himself as Kim Jong Un pointing at various items in supermarkets. He uploaded them to a Facebook page, which exploded in popularity, and within two weeks he'd booked his first professional gig as an impersonator and was flown out to Tel Aviv Howard, who is in his mid-40s and originally from Hong Kong, had been interested in global politics, especially that of dictatorships like North Korea, for many years. Combined with his enjoyment of satire and comedy, the music producer realised that becoming a Kim Jong Un impersonator was his ideal job. Speaking to Metro, Howard said that while interest in his work fluctuates depending on current events, he can see himself continuing his activism for many years to come. 'Whenever Kim launches a missile, my phone is ringing off the hook,' he explained. 'But I don't wait around for him to do something. I've noticed that the best way for me to get work is to do my own projects. 'I've always been political, I've always gone to protests for various causes I believe in, and I found that this is a very useful tool to satirise dictators.' Howard spoke to Metro from The Hague where he protested outside the Nato summit venue earlier this week. Posing with an inflatable nuke with 'Europe, my troops are already in Ukraine. Where are yours?' written on the side, it's safe to say his political views are clear. Howard said: 'People enjoy my satirical take on world events, and being in The Hague with all the action happening here it's been good for my career – unfortunately.' But this has got him in trouble in the past. After taking part in the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong in 2014 as Kim Jong Un, Howard's house was raided and he was arrested. Although the charges were dropped, he felt he had to leave Hong Kong for his own safety. From Donald Trump's inauguration to Olympic opening ceremonies, Howard has been all over the world to make a statement, but not everything has gone smoothly. He has previously been deported from Vietnam and detained in Singapore for his protests, and he says he was even followed and assaulted by North Korean agents. Thankfully, as he has Australian citizenship, he's been able to set up a secret base down under. In fact, the most bookings he's ever had came after he documented being kicked out of Vietnam. Howard explained: 'I knew my notoriety in the press would give me some protection, and even when the cops came in Hong Kong they said 'we're big fans, but our boss told us that we had to come'. 'I had to leave a life behind in Hong Kong, I miss getting some proper dim sum, but I have the privilege of being an Australian citizen, so I figured that since I have this privilege, I need to use it to speak up. 'We have two dictators now basically controlling the world, we've got Trump on one side and Xi Jinping on the other side, and everybody else is caught in the middle. 'I think for a lot of people who are not Trump supporters, they get sad and frustrated when every time they turn on their TV they see this idiot spouting his garbage. 'That's why I decided to satirise it, because the only way you can deal with that psychologically is to point out how ridiculous it is and make a joke out of it, which is extremely easy.' From Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator to political satire show Spitting Image, Howard has a wide variety of influences. He also rates Frank Sanazi, a comedian who impersonates Adolf Hitler singing the songs of Frank Sinatra. But how effective is satire at bringing about change? Howard argues it's vital. 'If I was just one protester with a sign, I would be ignored, it wouldn't have much of an impact, so I decided to use this impersonation to draw eyeballs to the cause of democracy, and it's very effective,' he explained. 'I think that's why dictators are so sensitive about it. All dictators fear being made fun of. 'A lot of protesters will be very angry, and a lot of people will get very turned off by that very aggressive way of protesting. 'If you're making a joke out of it, it's a gut reaction so people cannot look away, and the people you're making fun of, they feel they lose face. More Trending 'If you can make people laugh, it takes away the fear. 'I've even made supporters of China laugh, and as a protester and political activist, you not only want to get your side to be united but you want to change the minds of the supporters of the dictatorship, so I think it's very useful.' And if he was to ever come face to face with Kim Jong Un, he already knows what he'd say to the dictator. 'I'd say 'go kill yourself and make me the leader, I'll free your country',' he said. Makayla Timpson growing despite ‘tough' rookie year, will be needed with frontcourt depth limited

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Fever forward Natasha Howard texted Makayla Timpson before each game during the rookie's junior year at Florida State. 'Happy Game Day. Take the shot you want to take, and if you don't have the shot, rip and go,' read Howard's messages. Two years later, the Florida State alums became teammates when the Fever drafted Timpson in the second round of the 2025 WNBA draft. Their mentor-mentee relationship has only strengthened since Timpson joined Indiana. Timpson called her rookie campaign 'tough' and said it's been 'a lot of learning' but tries not to overwhelm herself with the process. The 22-year-old said she's growing in her ability to move without the ball, recognizing the significance of '45 and 90 cuts' and its ability to get herself and her teammates open. Through the difficult transition, by her side is an 11-year-veteran and three-time WNBA champion in Howard. 'She's been leading me the way, guiding me through this process and keeping my head on right,' Timpson said. 'I see the things she does and try to model myself after her and be as successful as she has been in the league.' Howard sees the resemblance between herself and Timpson. Howard said Timpson 'brings back memories of me rookie year' because of her athleticism, length and vertical ability. Drafted in 2014, Howard won a ring alongside Maya Moore (Minnesota Lynx) in 2017 and two with Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) in 2018 and 2020. Both Moore and Bird are in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Howard said vets like Moore and Bird made sure 'I got everything.' Whether it's inviting Timpson to her home for a meal or doing TikToks with the Georgia native, Howard hopes to provide Timpson with the same support she received as a rookie. 'I call her my twin. I love her to death,' Howard said. 'I always make sure she doesn't have to pay for anything. When I got in the league, the other vets were making sure I got everything that I need. So, I'm making sure she got everything that she needs.' Howard often instructs Timpson to be patient and stay intuitive in her first year. Fever coach Stephanie White praised Timpson for staying engaged during practice and consistently working with player development coach Keith Porter. White expects Timpson to play more minutes with Damiris Dantas' departure to play for Brazil in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup. Timpson played five minutes in the Fever's 85-75 home loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday. Though Timpson only averages 1.6 minutes per game this season, invaluable time alongside Howard lends White to believe Timpson's future is bright. 'She has a road map right in front of her, and they have such a unique relationship. I think it's gonna continue to help her grow in tremendous ways,' White said. 'Tash has been someone that's connected and communicated with her. It's been fortuitous that they are both here together, and she can help Makayla learn how to be a pro.' Timpson's personal goals for the year are to 'stay consistent and work hard.' She knows one can't develop without counsel and seeks advice from all Fever veterans, not just Howard. 'I love wisdom. I love hanging around older people. Not saying they're old in that way,' Timpson said with a smile. 'But just getting that knowledge from them, they know a lot. I want to know as much as they know, and they can correct me anytime they can. 'I'm working hard, and I know when my number is called, I'll be ready to impact the game and be a great teammate.' Howard commended Timpson for 'staying ready' regardless of her playing time. Because of Timpson's commitment to preparation, Howard has no doubt her mentee will excel in the WNBA. 'In this league, she gon' be able to show what she can do,' Howard said.

Dwight Howard says beloved dog died in hit-and-run accident. ‘Who could be so heartless'

Dwight Howard is devastated. And he wants answers. The former NBA great and current player for the Big 3's L.A. Riot on Wednesday wrote on Instagram that his dog, Sunday, died in an apparent hit-and-run accident on June 18 in Suwanee, Ga. Howard said that he was visiting New York when he received the tragic news that his beloved Belgian Malinois 'got loose and was hit by a car that kept going.' 'I'm devastated because you were the dog that never left my side, the dog that stuck to my hip at all times, and the one time you wander off without me being there someone takes you away from me,' Howard wrote. 'Who could be so heartless to do this to such an innocent girl with no remorse 'I've been trying to hold this in… I really have but it's killing me inside to get answers! I need answers and I won't stop searching until I find out what happen to my beautiful Sunday.' Howard implored his 3.7 million followers to share any information they might have about the alleged incident. The majority of his post, however, was a tribute in words, photos and videos to a dear pooch who sounds like she was one man's best friend. 'From the moment I got you, Sunday, you were more than just my dog… You were my peace. My protector. A reminder of everything beautiful and calm just like those early Sunday mornings,' wrote Howard, a three-time defensive player of the year who won an NBA title with the Lakers in 2020 and is set to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this fall. 'You hugged like no other. Barked at nothing like it meant everything. And every time I called your name, you came running full speed like your only mission was to love me. You waited at the door for me every single day, just to wrap your paws around me. And I'm gonna miss those hugs more than I can put into words. 'You were joy. You were warmth. You were my girl. And your life was cut short too soon. You helped me Smile through all the Storms I've been through but what do I do now that my Sunday Sunshine is gone'
