Morocco National Hackathon supports digitalization for four local NGOs

The closing ceremony of the National Hackathon for the Digitalization of Civil Society took place on Friday, July 18, in Salé. On this occasion, Huawei Morocco, in partnership with the delegated ministry attached to the Head of Government in charge of relations with Parliament, unveiled the four winning projects of this year's edition. Submitted by associations from various regions of the country, the selected initiatives stand out for their strong local roots and are expected to have a meaningful impact on the ground. The event was organized in collaboration with 45 associations and aimed to «support the digital transformation of civil society organizations through concrete technological projects, designed and developed over three days with the support of technical mentors and Huawei experts», the organizers explained. Jason Chen, Vice President of Huawei Morocco, emphasized the significance of this initiative. In his opening remarks, he highlighted the transformative power of digital tools and their positive effects on local civil society actions, particularly when it comes to the broader socio-economic value they can generate. Among the four winning projects was one led by the Tarwa N'tmazirt Association for Development, based in Sidi Ifni. The project focuses on digitally monitoring the growth and irrigation status of the region's argan forests, an essential part of Morocco's environmental heritage that requires collective efforts to preserve. Lahcen Baid, president of the NGO and recipient of the fourth prize, told Yabiladi that the initiative reflects the association's long-standing commitment to protecting this endemic tree. The group has already planted 20,000 trees in the Sebt Ennabour commune. «The support for the digitalization of this project will allow us to rigorously monitor each of our argan trees remotely, over a large area of several hectares», Baid explained. The association is deeply committed to ensuring the project's success, especially since Baid himself comes from a family that has cultivated argan trees for generations in the region. «We are working to replant and preserve these trees in the best possible way because we have noticed they are deteriorating in our locality. To preserve this ancestral practice, we've not only committed to reviving this endemic species, but also to using digital tools to enhance its conservation for agricultural purposes». The association also highlighted that the argan tree is particularly water-efficient, an increasingly important trait in a country facing one of its most severe droughts. In this context, «modernizing the irrigation methods of argan forests offers nothing but benefits: avoiding excessive watering, maintaining the trees more effectively, and optimizing the use of water resources allocated to agriculture», Baid added. Digitalization Benefiting Social Initiatives The first prize of the hackathon was awarded to the Tawada Association for Development and Culture, based in Tounfite, in the Midelt province. Ali Aït Rouh, president of the NGO, told Yabiladi that their winning project is a digital platform designed to improve the distribution of clothing and blankets to local populations living in mountainous and remote areas. «The goal is to centralize donations and connect donors directly with beneficiaries, streamlining the donation process and ensuring that distributions effectively reach the targeted regions», he explained. «These areas are known for their very harsh winters. For years, we've been collecting donations through social media and online appeals. While we received responses, they were limited compared to the actual needs on the ground», he added. «The creation of this dedicated platform, further supported by the hackathon, will streamline the donation circuit and make it even more impactful, with greater benefits for the communities in need». Aït Rouh also expressed hope that the digitalization initiative «will add value by complementing the efforts made by other local civil society actors, associations from other cities, international NGOs, local authorities, and the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, all of which are involved in winter aid operations in Tounfite». The third prize went to the Baraa Association in Oulad Teïma for its app project aimed at educators to enhance the quality of primary education in rural areas. The second prize was awarded to the Moroccan Civil Aid Association – Lakhsas, for its initiative to create a digital platform to support people with disabilities by identifying their needs in education and training.

Huawei, Moroccan Government Close National Hackathon for Civil Society Digitalization

Marrakech – The National Hackathon for civil society digitalization concluded Friday at Rabat's National Training and Meetings Center, marking the end of a three-day event focused on advancing digital transformation among civil society organizations across Morocco. Organized by Huawei Morocco in partnership with the Ministry Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of Relations with Parliament, the event brought together 45 associations from all regions of the country. The initiative aimed to support the digital transformation of civil society organizations through concrete technological projects developed with assistance from technical mentors and Huawei experts. Minister Delegate Mustapha Baitas delivered remarks at the closing ceremony, followed by a speech from Jason Chen, Vice-President of Huawei Morocco. The ceremony also included the announcement of winners, certificate distribution, and a press opportunity. The Tawada Association for Development and Culture from Tounfite in Midelt Province secured first place in the competition. 'After a very intense competition, we were able to win first place at this national event,' Ali Ait Errouh, President of Tawada Association, told Morocco World News (MWN). Ait Errouh explained that his association's winning project, titled 'Warmlink,' targets residents of rural areas, villages, and mountain communities. 'We earned this top ranking with merit, and the project we presented is a promising initiative through which the association will establish a digital platform based on volunteerism,' he said. The Association of Ighata took second place with their project focused on creating a digital platform for people with special needs. 'Our project focused on people with special needs. We aim to create a digital platform specifically for them, which would serve as a comprehensive database,' Houcine Aboubakr, president of the Association of Ighata, told MWN. Aboubakr pointed out the critical need for such a platform, noting that people with special needs currently face serious challenges in the digital space. 'Our first goal with this platform is to create a digital profile for each person, including their name, type of disability, and GPS location,' he explained. The platform will also identify specific needs, whether related to mobility, psychological support, or intellectual challenges, and include information about education and health status, including health insurance coverage. 'We observed that most people with special needs still have to pay out of pocket for healthcare, even though there are programs like AMO and others available. Our goal is to address these gaps through this digital platform,' Aboubakr added. The hackathon, which ran for three days, stressed the growing importance of digital solutions for civil society organizations in their future projects. Tags: digitalization in MoroccoHuawei Morocco

Moroccan students win global innovation Grand Prize at Huawei ICT competition in China

A team of Moroccan students won the Grand Prize in the Innovation category at the Huawei ICT Competition 2024–2025 during the global finals held in Shenzhen, China, from May 19 to 25. Announced by Huawei Morocco in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, this achievement marks a historic first for Morocco in this prestigious competition, which annually brings together top global talents in information and communication technology (ICT). According to an official statement, the Moroccan team consisted of Ayman Amokrane, Maryeme Hassani, and Ibrahim Lamrabet, all students at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Errachidia, under Moulay Ismaïl University. Guided by Professor Yousef Farhaoui, the team developed NovaOr, a digital solution for intelligent hospital management. «Thanks to its decision support system, NovaOr reduces processing times, alleviates congestion in healthcare services, and streamlines resource allocation, thereby enhancing coordination and optimizing the patient experience», the statement explained. The journey of the laureates—from registration in September 2024 through national and regional selection stages—was highly praised by the international jury and experts. For Huawei Morocco and the ministry, this success underscores «the academic excellence of Moroccan universities» and reflects Huawei's commitment to «integrate digital technology into university curricula and stimulate innovation among young talents, in line with technological transformation and digital sovereignty». Both parties emphasized that this recognition, «achieved against teams from the world's leading universities, not only demonstrates the high level of preparation of Moroccan students but also their capacity to propose innovative solutions with significant added value».

Moroccan Students Reach Global Tech4Good Finals in China

Rabat – Huawei Morocco, in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, announced the participation of a Moroccan student team in the global finals of the Tech4Good competition. The event took place in China last month. The Moroccan team began their journey in Essaouira through the Seeds for the Future program. There, they successfully qualified for the Tech4Good finals after competing in a regional round organized by Huawei Northern Africa. The competition brought together 160 young participants from 17 countries. Among them, 18 Moroccan students stood out, and six were selected to represent Morocco at the world finals. The students came from universities and institutions across the country, including Al Akhawayn University, Moulay Ismail University in Meknes, Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra, and Suptech Santé. Their project, called Smart Aquaponics, impressed the judges with its smart farming solution that uses IoT and cloud computing to manage water and nutrients more efficiently, according to a statement from Huawei Morocco. The project aims to offer a local and practical solution to a major global challenge, as water scarcity becomes a growing global issue. It combines technology and environmental awareness to promote sustainable agriculture. The team had a unique experience in China, as they visited major tech companies, including Huawei's headquarters, attended advanced training sessions, and received international mentorship. These opportunities helped them improve their project before presenting it to a global jury during the final. Jason Chen, Vice President of Huawei Morocco, praised the team's performance, saying their qualification for the Tech4Good global finals shows the power of innovation and youth in Morocco. 'Through initiatives like Seeds for the Future, Huawei continues to support projects that address global challenges while empowering Moroccan youth to position themselves as leaders in digital transformation,' Chen added. He concluded that the company is 'proud' to support them in this journey, 'which is both a boost for their talents and an investment in a smarter and more connected future.'

Moroccan, Huawei Sign New Agreement to Boost Digital Skills, Innovation

Rabat – The Moroccan Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation and Huawei Morocco signed a new partnership agreement in Marrakech on the sidelines of GITEX Africa 2025. The agreement seeks to modernize higher education, strengthen digital skills, and improve national technology infrastructure. The goal is to make the digital sector a powerful tool for inclusion, competitiveness, and cooperation. The signing ceremony was attended by Azzedine El Midaoui, Minister of Higher Education, and David Li, CEO of Huawei Morocco. Shen Li, President of Huawei Northern Africa, also attended the event along with other distinguished guests. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to prepare Moroccan youth for the digital future, said Huawei in a press release. It added that the partnership serves as a strong example of collaboration between the public and private sectors, with the aim of boosting development and innovation in the country. The new agreement focuses on training university professors and regularly updating educational content to reflect the latest technological advancements. It also aims to build stronger links between Moroccan researchers and Huawei's international research centers, offering opportunities for PhD students to learn and collaborate globally. Innovation is another key part of the partnership, with plans to support student entrepreneurship and promote new digital projects. In addition, the agreement emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between universities and the job market to help students transition into employment more smoothly. David Li welcomed this new phase of cooperation, saying that it is a 'result of mutual trust and collaboration between our Ministry and Huawei.' 'It marks a big step in our growing partnership. This new phase of our partnership reflects our commitment to supporting the training of tomorrow's technology leaders,' he added. The statement noted that the new agreement builds on a successful partnership that began in 2021. Since then, the ministry and Huawei have trained over 16,000 students, awarded 1,400 HCIA certifications, hosted 100 webinars, and engaged nearly 5,000 students in national ICT competitions. The ICT Job Fair alone helped generate 1,800 job opportunities for young people. This renewed collaboration is expected to open new doors for students, researchers, and the entire digital ecosystem in Morocco.
