Butter Yellow Is Summer's Trendiest Shade—Here Are 4 Nail Looks to Try
Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Now that summer is here, our seasonal beauty switch-ups are officially in motion, starting with the arrival of joyful, butter yellow manicures. Whether it's a layer of glossy soft yellow polish or a minimalist spring-inspired design, the options are endless when it comes to sunny nail ideas—it's simply a matter of choosing your style. Consider what type of manicure you'd like to sport this summer. Classic polish allows you to switch up your design (not to mention try new nail art techniques at home), while a gel formula offers longevity for those looking for a longer-lasting mani. For ultimate durability, opt for acrylics, which are perfect for a long-haul trip, or try BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) to encourage strength and new length for weakened tips. Here, we've rounded up the best buttery nail designs and manicure ideas for summer, including fancy French tips and playful aura nails. You can add an elegant sheen to any classic manicure using chrome, but this summer it's best placed over a sunshine yellow French tip. 'Begin by painting one coat of your desired base shade (I'm a huge fan of Essie Gel Couture in Sheer Fantasy),' explains nail artist and Essie ambassador Michelle Humphrey. 'Paint your French tip—this can be white, or any color! For warmer days, you might want to opt for a brighter shade like lilac, matcha green, or yellow.' To finish, apply either a chrome top coat (or chrome powder with a clear top coat) to add a finishing metallic glaze to your mani. So chic and so modern. Florals for spring-summer may seem cliché, but we assure you, these delicate designs couldn't be more trendy. 'Start by applying your desired base shade; sheer nudes always look beautiful, but you can choose any color you like. Soft sorbet shades would also be dreamy for this look,' says Humphrey. 'Use a dotting tool or a bobby pin to create a small circle of five white dots, then create the center of the flower by adding one more yellow dot. Tip: Be sure to clean the tool regularly to prevent the polish from drying and the dots becoming uneven. You can have several flowers or just one on the nail—the options are limitless!' Trendy but never childish, these airbrushed tips have been making the rounds since 2023, retaining their popularity thanks to an easy-to-replicate design and versatile set of colors. This summer, they're worn best in bright yellows and vibrant oranges. Think sunset shades. 'Paint your nails in your desired shades—I love choosing bright pastels on each nail,' says Humphrey. 'Apply a matte top coat and allow it to thoroughly dry. Grab any eyeshadow palette. Using an eyeshadow applicator sponge, gently buff the eyeshadow into the nail where you'd like your aura.' Complete on all nails, then apply a glossy top coat for that high-shine professional finish. Gingham has long been hailed as the official fabric of summer, but did you know it also looks incredibly chic when adorned over bare nails? Better yet, match your manicure to your lightweight summer wardrobe. While we're huge fans of an at-home nail design, we're the first to admit that this idea is far from beginner-friendly. Save this detailed inspiration for your in-salon appointment, whether that's an acrylic set to last well beyond the heat wave, or a classic gel manicure that won't smear and smudge throughout the week.

'My cat had a psychic reading and his list of demands was outrageous'
Animal psychic Jackie Weaver is renowned for being able to read the minds of pets around the world, and my cat seems to have a sixth sense too. Five minutes before Jackie arrives at my home, the normally laid back British Blue Shorthair is on high alert. Usually to be found hanging out by his food bowl or snoozing in his favourite cat carrier, Humphrey has scarpered by the time the psychic knocks on my door. With animal psychic readings said to be increasing in popularity - particularly on social media platforms like TikTok - Mirror UK Online decided to give it a whirl and sought out the creme de la creme of experts. Jackie is a celebrity psychic who has done readings for Coronation Street legend Bill Roache's (Ken Barlow) dogs and Welsh actor Matthew Rhys' horses - but can she accurately analyse my pride and joy? Luckily Humphrey's nosey side wins out and by the time I've learned all about the psychic's incredible career, he has reappeared - just in time for his reading. It's fair to say Humphrey wasn't too keen on having his thoughts read at first. When he met Jackie, he jumped onto the kitchen table, rolled onto his side looking at her enticingly to lure her in and then, when she stroked him, to my horror he went in for the kill. First came the warning bite before he gave the psychic's hand several whacks with his paw, with his tail lashing away furiously in the background. "You told me you weren't mean," laughed Jackie, as my angry cat turned upside down and much to my mortification, attacked her with his paws once again. Bumpy introduction over and soon they're soon 'chatting away'. "I'm going to ask him to tell me about himself and see what he comes up with," she says, laughingly telling me the first thing Humphrey tells her is: "I do lazy really well". Spot on! Humphrey says he often gets under my feet too which is also correct as he's forever trying to kill me on the stairs. My cat tells Jackie he enjoys it when my young daughter covers him with a blanket and draws pictures of him. He confesses to naughtily tapping her on the head with his paws occasionally too. I urge Jackie to ask Humphrey why he won't sleep in my daughter's bedroom, something she's keen to make happen and he says she'll need to be less hands on and stop talking in her sleep. "He's saying: 'I'm just looking'," says Jackie of the approach he wants her to take when it comes to her endless cuddles. "That's his advice to her." Humphrey opened up to Jackie on a wide variety of subjects Humphrey says the word "biscuits" to Jackie too, which stuns me because my daughter used to sneak cat biscuits upstairs to try and tempt him into her room, at least until I put a stop to it. Humphrey is childlike himself, Jackie says, picking up on the fact he sleeps in my bed and likes to switch between the top and bottom ends of it. He tells her about his cat pals in the neighbourhood - a "small, cute tabby" who fits the description of my neighbour's cat and a "black and white tuxedo" moggie who pops in occasionally. So how would Humphrey describe his life? "Very easy indeed". His only complaint seems to be about the vet - he's keen to tell me his teeth and ears are absolutely fine and don't need examining anymore. His only ailment, he tells Jackie, is coughing up the occasional furball. The most surprising request Humphrey makes concerns the outdoors, with Jackie accurately picking up on the fact he spends most of his time in the back garden and rarely ventures out front. "Cat mint," Humphrey tells me through the psychic. Our cat used to have this plant in the garden of our old house and it seems he'd like it in our new one too. "I had no idea I was psychic for a long time," says Jackie of how she got started in the business. "I got to my early 40s and got stage four cancer, they only gave me four weeks to live. That was in 2005 and it wasn't my time to go, I had loads of chemotherapy. At that point I had no physical strength. We had horses and dogs and I booked an animal communicator as a treat to come and talk to them. "She talked to my rescue dog who told her I could communicate too and the penny dropped. She showed me how to do it - when it comes into your head it often sounds like your own thoughts and you have to learn to distinguish between the two." Jackie is busier than ever, with her clients ranging from everyday people to high-flyers and famous faces. She focuses on spirit work and end of life, saying it's most rewarding and most needed. "Animals are so accepting of going to heaven," she says, detailing how she often passes on a dying pet's last request. Jackie has worked with a wide range of animals including horses, dogs, ferrets and even a kangaroo. She recently did a reading for her first bearded dragon. "It said to me: 'My skin's actually soft'," she said. "He looked very spiky on the picture but his owner confirmed the skin on his belly was very soft." Another client was a guide dog who became unusually stressed when his blind owner, who rode horses, took her wheelbarrow over to the manure heap at the stables. "She pulled the wheelbarrow behind her and the dog told me: 'She's not got a guide'," said Jackie. "I suggested she started pushing the wheelbarrow in front of her and her dog was fine watching her from then on." The psychic, who declined to say how much she charges and asked for a donation to an animal charity in lieu of a fee from Mirror UK Online, works around the world mainly by phone. She is able to work from a picture of description or even just a description of an animal and is particularly sought after in the United States and Australia. While I tried to keep an open mind about Humphrey's reading I am a natural cynic, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned. Jackie's analysis was pretty accurate and while there were no huge revelations there were takeaways I will put into practice. Above all, by the time Jackie had left I was reassured I have a very happy cat. I can definitely see how her readings bring comfort to people whose pets have recently passed away and with a nation full of pet lovers, can only see the popularity of animal psychics increasing. Kris Marshall to return as beloved TV detective as BBC spin-off resumes filming
Actor Kris Marshall is set to reprise his role as DI Humphrey Goodman in the popular BBC crime drama Beyond Paradise. The star, 52, plays detective Humphrey in the hit Death In Paradise spin-off, where it follows his life in the sleepy Devon town of Shipton Abbott with fiancée Martha (Sally Bretton). Humphrey made the move back to England after three years in idyllic Saint Marie, where he has been for the past three years. Filmed in Cornwall, Beyond Paradise is primarily shot in the coastal town of Looe Guildhall, as well as other locations in picturesque Devon. The third series ended on a bittersweet note as Humphrey and Martha bade farewell to foster daughter Rosie. Production has now begun on the show's fourth series, with Kris once again stepping into the shoes of the small-town detective. Fans of the show have confirmed that filming has begun on Series Four, with users of a fan page posting images from behind the scenes. As reported by The Express, one of these snaps shows a sign which reads 'BP Unit.' This is accompanied by the caption 'Back filming in Cornwall.' Viewers in the comments identified the location as St. Mellion Golf Club and Estate, where the production is believed to store their trailers and lorries for filming. Another fan page reportedly shared a notice from the production company, informing residents when and where filming would take place. Explaining that it would take place 'in and around East and West Looe,' the sign informed readers that: 'the events will be recorded and may form part of a television programme.' It added that those who enter will consent to being recorded, adding: 'we hope this will not inconvenience your visit.' Kris took over as DI Humphrey as the second lead of the long-running BBC One crime drama, taking over from departing Ben Miller who had played DI Richard Poole for the first two series. After starring in the show for three series, Kris was replaced by Father Ted star Ardal O'Hanlon, who stayed on full-time once Humphrey returned to The UK. Ardal was then succeeded by The Royle Family actor Ralf Little, who played DI Neville Parker for the last five years. The latest actor to carry the baton is EastEnders star Don Gilet, who first appeared in the show's 2024 Christmas special and went on to lead its 14th series. Don will return as DI Mervin Wilson in the show's 15th series, likely airing early next year. My Family star Kris has previously hit back at critics of his spin-off, explaining of its importance in today's divided, 'binary' world. More Trending 'I have a theory – not a theory, actually, it's a fact – that to make a show like Death in Paradise or Beyond Paradise, that has a broad demographic, that you can sit down and watch with your kids, that bonds all family members in the room, is incredibly hard to do,' he told The Radio Times. 'And to have people scorn it… I'm fine with it now but it bothered me a bit in the past. These shows are hard to make and they bring people together – that's got to be lauded a little bit, right?' he continued. View More » In a very un-Humphrey like flourish, he finished: 'It's a show that harks back to a world that we still wish Britain was, a place where the world doesn't take itself quite so seriously. The world has got too binary. It's less nuanced. The world today takes itself so f***ing seriously.' Got a story? Trey Smith, Kansas City Chiefs agree on four-year deal, per reports
One of Patrick Mahomes' top protectors is staying put for the long-term. Guard Trey Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to a four-year, $94 million deal Tuesday to keep the Pro Bowl offensive lineman with the team for the foreseeable future, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Those reported figures make Smith the highest-paid guard in NFL history. Smith, 26, finished out his rookie contract in the 2024 NFL season. He was set to hit free agency but the Chiefs initially put the franchise tag on him to keep him with the team at least for the 2025 season. This deal means they can rest assured he'll be there for many more years. Kansas City drafted Smith in the sixth round, No. 226 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. A standout lineman at Tennessee, Smith fell in the NFL Draft due to medical concerns. Tennessee's medical staff discovered blood clots in his lungs during his sophomore year and he sat out part of that season. That concern ended up helping the Chiefs as he was available late in the 2021 draft but has missed just one game in his four years in the league. He and fellow 2021 draftee Creed Humphrey at center make for one of the best young center-guard combinations in the league. Here's what to know about Smith's deal with the Chiefs. Trey Smith contract details Smith agreed to an four-year deal worth $94 million for an average annual value (AAV) of $23.5 million and includes $70 million guaranteed. This AAV makes him the highest-paid guard in the league, per OverTheCap. Playing on the franchise tag in 2025 would've given him the highest AAV of any guard in the league but for the sake of long-term stability. For a few million less per year, he'll have security going into the future. He'll be lining up next to the highest-paid center in the league by AAV in Humphrey. The Chiefs signed him last offseason to a four-year extension that put him at the top of the position league-wide. While the Chiefs are spending on Smith and Humphrey, they're relying on free agents and draft picks to fill out the rest of the offensive line. Former second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia is slated to start at guard opposite Smith. Josh Simmons, the team's top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, is expected to start at left tackle with free agent acquisition Jaylon Moore as a backup option. Smith is now secured long-term with Humphrey. That duo and incumbent starter Jawaan Taylor at right tackle to give the Chiefs some stability opposite the new starters on the left side in 2025.
