'In so much pain': Ethiopian community coming together to support family of boy who died from apartment fall
Members of the Ethiopian community have come together to help the family of a five-year-old boy who tragically died after falling from an apartment building on Wednesday, according to police.

'It's very hard to explain the pain we're all feeling,' said Tesfaye Hunde, the boy's uncle, said in an interview with Postmedia.

'The support… it means a lot. We have got a lot of emotional support, and they feel our pain. People are coming and expressing their grief.'

'He just told me 'I need your help. The police are here, and I don't know what's going on, but I can't see him' (his son),' said Hunde.

'As soon as I got there, I knew something was badly wrong. I could see it in the eyes of the police.'
Hunde said his nephew was autistic, but described him as a child who was always full of energy and he loved to smile.

Recently, he said his nephew started to repeat a lot of words that family members would say, and he was starting to speak more, which Hunde said made both of his parents so happy.

'Just four days before he died, he started to call him Baba (term for father in Ethiopian) for the first time, and his dad was so proud. He sent me a video of it to tell me,' said Hunde.

'Now, his father just wants to keep watching that video.'

Hunde said he doesn't know all the details of the incident, but police are still investigating what caused the tragedy.

Postmedia reached out to representatives of Hazelview Properties, the owners of the Pinnacle apartment and they've offered mental health support to the family and all residents of the building, who've been impacted by the incident.

'The community has been deeply impacted by such a tragedy. We have reached out the immediate family and offered our condolences and support, and let them know we're here for them in any way that we can.'

Hunde has taken in his brother and sister-in-law as well as their four-year-old and two-year-old son into his home to take care of them, while they grieve the loss of their son and brother.
