Continuous turn lane project on SH 34 set for July 14 start
PARIS – A roadway improvement project on State Highway 34 in Hunt County is set to begin this month, Texas Department of Transportation officials announced Wednesday. The $4.1 million project will add a continuous left-turn lane between Traders Road and Farm-to-Market Road 1570 on SH 34. The construction will include culvert extensions, roadway widening, pavement overlay and new striping, TxDOT said. Baker & Company Construction LLC has been given 144 working days to complete the job, weather permitting. The contractor is scheduled to begin setting up barricades and message boards Monday to alert drivers of upcoming construction. Work is expected to begin the following Monday, with a target completion date of February 2026. Lane closures are expected throughout the duration of the project.

"Staggering" cruelty: North Texas man charged after puppy found dead in dumpster, SPCA says
A North Texas man is facing animal cruelty charges after authorities found an emaciated puppy dead inside a crate that had been thrown into a dumpster, according to the SPCA of Texas. Jacob Paul Nichols, of Hunt County, was arrested Tuesday after the puppy's body was discovered in a trash receptacle at an apartment complex in Greenville. Investigators determined the puppy was adopted in January and rehomed to Nichols on Feb. 13. She died from extreme starvation and dehydration over an extended period, according to the SPCA of Texas. Nichols had signed a contract agreeing to provide proper care. Investigators determined the puppy was adopted in January and rehomed to Nichols on Feb. 13 and that she died of extreme starvation and dehydration over a prolonged period, the SPCA said. A warrant was issued for Nichols' arrest Monday before authorities located and took him into custody in Johnson County. Sandy, before being "rehomed" to the suspect, according to the SPCA of Texas. SPCA of Texas Investigator: Cruelty was "staggering" "No animal deserves to suffer in silence the way this puppy did," said Courtney Burns, CAWA, chief investigator of the SPCA of Texas' Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit. "The evidence indicates that she was trapped, neglected, and ultimately starved to death over a span of months. "The level of cruelty in this case is staggering, and the SPCA of Texas and Hunt County Sheriff's Office are committed to ensuring justice is served." Nichols is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $200,000 bond.

Community invited to share positive messages at future CASA office site
The community is invited to take part in a special event this weekend to support CASA for Hunt County, an organization dedicated to advocating for children in foster care. The public is encouraged to visit the future site of the organization's permanent home to write blessings, hopes or kind thoughts on the building's wooden framework before the walls go up. The event will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and again on Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at 2701 Washington St. in Greenville. Attendees can bring a favorite pen or marker to leave a message, though supplies will also be available on site. Messages can include prayers, quotes or any words of encouragement for CASA staff, board members, volunteer advocates and the children they serve. CASA volunteers work to ensure children in foster care find safe, permanent homes. The new office space will help the nonprofit continue and expand its mission in Hunt County. Sunday gunshot fatality under investigation
Greenville police are investigating a Sunday shooting that left one person dead. Greenville officers responded to the 5100 block of Interstate 30 at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home shortly before 3:40 p.m. but no other information is available at this time. Hunt County EMS and Greenville Fire Department also responded but the individual was pronounced dead a short time later. This is a developing story.
