Whanganui club rugby: Taihape edge Rātana in thrilling women's rugby clash

Rātana were assisted immeasurably by flanker Hayley Gabriel, an 11-game Taranaki standout, who scored a double. Their other tries came from fullback Acacia Kingi-Te Koari and halfback Unique Haami-Rerekura, while Armani Martin added three conversions. Sitting four points ahead of Rātana in the race for a home semifinal, Taihape will look to keep momentum going when they host Hunterville at Memorial Park tonight, while Rātana have the big test on home turf in the Pa on Saturday, facing the unbeaten AGC Training Marist Clovers. Hunterville are also hunting points as they now sit outside the top four after a tough game with fellow newcomers the Heidi Macaulay Realty Bulls, as the Manawatū club made it two wins in a row with a 29-22 away victory. Bulls first five Alyse Bird continued her great form with 14 points from two tries and two conversions, with the other tries coming from fullback Sinead Barrell, second five Aaone Sio and lock Kat Penny-Baker. The home side has the Hendersons – skipper and lock Brooke, along with flanker Chloe – who scored two tries between them. Winger Amoe Harawira dotted down, as did one of the Tipus - No 8 Shayden and halfback Shyana – while fullback Charlize Cook added a conversion. Bulls now have the chance to go for three straight wins against Marton Queenbeez at home tonight. Draw May 23: Bulls vs Marton, Bulls Domain, 6.30pm; Taihape vs Hunterville, Memorial Park, 7pm; May 24: Rātana vs Marist, Pa, 1pm. Senior competition Border Seniors have the first victory of the season under their belts and a chance at some silverware coming up, but their biggest goal this year is confirming the future of their club. The dichotomy out in South Taranaki for the past decade is at Tasman Tanning Premier level. Waverley Harvesting Border have been undisputed powerhouses, while their Senior team have struggled for traction, and at times even to keep a full squad together. But addressing these issues this season is arguably the most well-qualified coaching and management group in the whole Senior grade. Having coached the Border Premiers to their inaugural title in 2016 and then winning the Taranaki Premier title last year with the Stratford-Eltham club, Ross Williams came back to Dallison Park to help build up the B team, being joined by former Marist Premier coach Jerome McCrea. Also lending their forwards expertise are two retiring stalwarts from the Border Premier title five-peat: former captain Angus Middleton and front rower Hamish Mellow. Provided with elite-level structure, Border were competitive in defeat from their first four games, averaging nearly 17 points while conceding 35 per match, certainly not blowouts. Then it clicked at home last Saturday with a 35-14 win over Bennett's Taihape to move into the top eight. Although the side had the services of Premier and former Whanganui outside back Harry Symes, the regulars led the way with centre William Black scoring two tries, while flanker Zane Annabell, halfback Kobe Pene and reserve front-rower Reefton Pene also dotted down. Williams is enjoying working alongside McCrea, Middleton and Mellow in rearing this rookie team. 'To be a sustainable model, they need a B team and they need to grow the guys in the town – they're the future of the club. 'We haven't had a lot of time together so every week, the more time together, the more they gel. 'They're enjoying the trainings because they're organised. There's quite a bit of care shown towards the group and within the group, which I think gets the best out of them.' It sets Border up for their Whanganui Challenge Shield away match with McCrea Scanning Counties, which ironically pits the coaching group up against their mates from Border's Premier title wins, Lindsay Horrocks and Bryn Hudson. Draw May 24, 1pm kickoffs unless noted (times subject to change): Utiku Old Boys vs Ruapehu, Memorial Park; Hunterville vs Taihape, Hunterville Domain; Kaierau vs Pirates, Country Club; Marist Celtic vs Marist Knights, Spriggens Park; Counties vs Border, Macnab Domain (2pm).

Whanganui club rugby: Undefeated teams Ruapehu and Marist Knights face off at Rochfort Park

'There's a few young fellas from the college that have stepped up, and there's the odd guy that's come in from work. 'There was a good basis from last year anyway, which was good.' Ruapehu College First XV won the Manawatū Premier 2 schoolboys competition last season, and out of that squad come Chrissy Winter, Jimmy Rowe and Hunter Cross, who played in the Whanganui Under-16s under Chris Winter, as well as Tahatika Te Riaki, who made the U18s. Still with plenty of grunt in the engine room, the side retain Premier-experienced forwards like Mac-James Edmonds, Christian Hawira, Kevin McDonnell and Ben Waiwai, while Ezekiel Anderson is back home from a one-season stint with Tāmata Hauhā Rātana. Also home from Byfords Readimix Taihape is current Steelform Whanganui representative Kahl Elers-Green, who captains the team from the midfield, while last year's talented young skipper Harry Rowe made his comeback from injury against Hunterville. They will need to be on song to contain the rampant Knights. Winter hopes to contain their speedy attackers and pull them into an honest country rugby game. 'We have to. If we let them run, we'll be no good. 'We've watched them; when we played Pirates, they were on before us, watched their skill level. 'They're a well-drilled team. We'll have to make a game plan this week and go give it our all.' Draw May 17, 1pm kickoffs unless noted (times subject to change): Hunterville v Utiku Old Boys, Hunterville Domain; Border v Taihape, Dallison Park; Ruapehu v Marist Knights, Rochfort Park; Counties v Kaierau, 2pm; Pirates v Marist Celtic, Spriggens Park, 2pm. Women's competition Given there is a clear 'Queen of the Hill' moving forward in the Tasman Tanning Women's competition, the other teams will look to fight for position as we reach the end of the first round of matches. Unbeaten AGC Training Marist Clovers made a big statement with their 71-17 win over second-placed Silks Audit Rātana last Friday night, which allowed defending champions Byfords Construction Taihape to move up into second place, following their default win over Hunterville. Forward power was the key for Marist in their 13-try win, with their international props Sosoli Talawadua (Black Ferns, Manusina) and Lavenia Nauga-Grey (Fijiana) both scoring doubles, while dynamic No 8 Waimarie Rauhina got a hat-trick. Marist centre Meilini Meo also grabbed a hat-trick, while Rātana fullback Carrie Rennie got a double for her team. Taihape also had a heavy loss to Marist on Anzac Day although, just like Rātana, they have comfortably won all their other fixtures. It all means Friday night's big match at Cooks Gardens between second and third is already shaping as the first part of a pivotal battle to secure the other home semifinal on July 4. Defending champions Taihape had the wood on the then-new Rātana team last season, but there wasn't much in it, including during a rugged 17-5 semifinal win. While that battle plays itself out, the other question will be which other club could secure fourth and the remaining semifinal spot, and hopefully Hunterville are back on track as they host fellow newcomers Heidi Macaulay Realty Bulls on Friday night. Like Hunterville, Bulls secured the first victory of their team's young history against the Marton Queenbeez, winning 81-5 at Marton Park on Saturday afternoon. Bulls' first five Alyse Bird had a 25-point haul from three tries and five conversions. Second five Aaone Sio also scored a hat-trick, while fullback Sinead Barrell contributed 11 points from a try and three conversions. Draw May 16: Hunterville v Bulls, Hunterville, 6.30pm; Rātana v Taihape, Cooks Gardens, 7.30pm. May 17: Marton defaulted to Marist.

Restoring the fortunes of our struggling wool industry

An Avondale-based acoustic panel and insulation manufacturer has developed a sustainable wool product it hopes could restore the fortunes of the struggling industry. Autex Acoustics has spent the last four years developing a way to process wool sustainably. Manufacturing starts on a Hunterville farm - with a conscious focus on fertilizer minimisation and soil management. The whole process is carbon negative - meaning more CO2 is removed from the atmosphere than emitted during the manufacturing process. So far Autex Acoustic produces insulation and acoustic panels, and last week opened a research and development Autex Future Lab to develop sustainable materials for commercialisation. This comes as wood producers respond with dismay to Bremworth's decision to re-introduce some synthetic carpets. Autex creative director and Future Labs leader Jono Mountfort speaks to Kathryn. Whanganui club rugby: Counties aim to defend Whanganui Shield

Among the 35 players available for the season start, Counties have secured some significant talent. After five straight Premier championships with Border, legendary Steelform Whanganui halfback Lindsay Horrocks has returned to his original family club. The 2015 NZ Heartland Player of the Year, 35-year-old Horrocks played 102 games for Whanganui, winning three Meads Cups and two Lochore Cups, as well as nine matches for the NZ Heartland XV. McNab appreciates the structure and game management Horrocks brings to the team. 'Lindsay definitely does help, but it's more than that, we've just got a bit more from last year – got a bit of fire in our belly. 'We're there to do something – we want to be noticed now. 'They've got a great amount of potential, it's just about bringing it out.' Also joining Counties is Yarrall's son Jack (23 games for Whanganui between 2016-22), who despite being a hooker has a little extra speed and so plays midfield. Another standout is top finisher Emitai Logadraudrau, a Manawatū Mustangs league representative while with Whanganui Boxon, who switched to Ngamatapouri, later being named in the Whanganui Development XV and Pacifica teams. These players help lift a squad whose core has been together a few years and nurture prospects like Falcon Profitt, who had a great game against Celtic. But more will be needed when Counties host Kelso Hunterville, eager to get back the Shield they surrendered to Celtic in Week 1. 'From what I can gather from the team, they're always tough games, so we've got to step up again,' said Yarrall. Draw May 2-3 - 1pm kickoffs unless noted (times subject to change): Border vs Pirates, Dallison Park; Taihape vs Utiku Old Boys, Memorial Park; Kaierau vs Marist Knights, Country Club; Ruapehu vs Marist Celtic, Rochfort Park; Counties vs Hunterville, Macnab Domain. Women's competition We have a Friday night double-header at Cooks Gardens for the third round of the Tasman Tanning Women's competition, starting with a Rangitīkei derby. Second-place Silks Audit Rātana will take on the Marton Queenbeez in the early fixture then, under the full lights, table leaders AGC Training Marist Clovers meet the newly minted Hunterville, who picked up the first win in their young history on Anzac Day. Hunterville turned it on for their supporters at the Domain with a 106-0 victory over the Queenbeez. The home side took to the park led by skipper Brooke Henderson at lock with Chloe Henderson at flanker, and six tries were credited to that surname. Advertisement Advertise with NZME. First-five Stacey Jones, midfielder Charlie Bennett and reserve Nina Rimene got doubles, while halfback Shyana Tipu had a 17-point haul from a try and six conversions. Marist picked up a little revenge for last season's shock grand final loss with a 47-5 away win over Byfords Construction Taihape. Lock Akosita Marr scored a hat-trick, while winger Alice Ireton had a great day with the boot, converting all six Marist tries, including the one she scored herself. Rātana continued their good form with an 82-15 road win over Heidi Macaulay Realty Bulls, scoring 15 tries and kicking six conversions. Taihape will next host Bulls on Friday evening at Memorial Park as they look to regain momentum, wanting to secure a Top 2 spot for a home semifinal on July 4. Draw, May 2
