Landers: Three things Cork got wrong against Tipperary

Mark Landers pointed to three tactical errors he felt Cork made in the demoralising All-Ireland final defeat by Tipperary. For starters, the 1999 All-Ireland winning captain felt Mark Coleman should have become Cork's extra defender once it was clear Tipperary were playing a sweeper at the other end. Speaking on Dalo's Hurling Show, Landers said: 'How come Mark Coleman wasn't freed up when we knew we had an extra man at the back? Imagine if Patrick Collins had Mark Coleman as the puckout option, that would have been a huge help. 'We weren't prepared for a sweeper. If we were, we'd have come out with a different plan second half. We didn't have a different plan. It was a case of we're going route one all the time.' Landers would also have allowed Sean O'Donoghue resume his tagging job on Tipperary forward Darragh McCarthy. O'Donoghue had dominated the duel in the league final, before McCarthy was sent off before the throw-in for an altercation between the pair in Munster. "Why wasn't Sean O'Donoghue marking Darragh McCarthy? It felt like we didn't want to get involved in any controversy, so we put Niall O'Leary on him and said that will be fine. I'd have put O'Donoghue on Darragh. He's had the better of him all year long and that would send out a message. Landers also feels that if talisman forward Seamus Harnedy was fit enough to come on as sub, Cork would have been better to start him, particularly as there were plenty of other forward options in reserve such as Shane Kingston and Robbie O'Flynn. 'He (Harnedy) proved when he came on, he was on an ocean of ball. Is he our Tony Kelly, that good a player? I think he is. Nobody likes marking him.' At the same time, flaws with the setup couldn't explain Cork's second half no-show. "Saying all that. If you put out any team, you'd expect to pick up more than two points in the second half. "It doesn't explain the non-performance. "I felt at half time we were flattered to be six points up. But six up, Tipp only have five forwards, we might be able to keep limping. It was a limping performance. At no stage did we own the game. "I thought we were doing enough to keep the scoreboard ticking over, hurling away. Dudsy Healy had been very good, Shane Barrett had been very good. Brian Haye and Alan Connolly came into it five minutes before half-time. "Did I envisage what was to come, absolutely not?"

Will it rain at Croke Park for the All-Ireland final on Sunday and does it matter?

Will the rain make a difference Sunday? That was the first question posed by the audience at the recording of Dalo's Hurling Show in Sarsfields on Wednesday evening. The narrative appears to be forming that a rainy day might suit Tipp better. That conditions might slow down the match, and negate Cork's perceived pace advantage. And perhaps disrupt the slick exchanges of the Cork forwards that have delivered goals so far in this championship. There is also an age-old concern that Cork don't win in the rain, though surely Mark Landers and the 99 gang put that one to bed, beating Kilkenny 0-12 to 0-11 in a miserly game in miserable conditions. In the years since, current Cork selector Wayne Sherlock, who played that day, has relished that factor. "The fact that it was in the rain, too, that was important, because you'd always hear this thing that Cork couldn't play in the rain.' To Sunday, Met Eireann, by Thursday afternoon, has dialled back on its gloomiest predictions. Earlier in the week, Dublin was among the areas threatened with thundery conditions Sunday, as well as spot flooding, hail, and lightning. Now, light showers are on the menu for final day, even predicted to clear around the throw-in time of 3:30pm. So do Anthony Daly and Mark Landers think the weather will matter? "I think if it was in any other pitch other than Croker you'd be talking about it more. Croke Park is so insulated," Dalo maintained. "The pitch is bone dry. It is nearly artificial. It is hard to get the right studs. You saw the footballers slipping and sliding." But he's certainly not having the idea that conditions will level any skills gap. "I often think the better hurlers come to the fore in the rain. I think the fella with beter touch comes to the fore in wet conditions. When the hurley and ball are slippy." Landers is in agreement. "In the Killkenny-Tipp semi-final there was a tsumani in the middle of the first half. It was ferocious for 10 minutes, but the score still ended up 4-20 to 0-30. "It didn't stop the skill of the players on view. I think the players will adapt to any conditions Sunday. Whether it's sunny, windy, raining. I think the level of skill and performance now is so high that I don't think the weather will come into it. "The weather will be the same for both teams and I think both teams are really skillful."

Tipperary v Kilkenny: What time, what channel and all you need to know about the All-Ireland SHC semi-final

The latest instalment of the Tipperary-Kilkenny rivalry is upon us. "A clash of the old gladiators" is how Anthony Daly put it. Tipperary are on the crest of a wave, with underage success already in the bag following the under-20s win, and Liam Cahill's seniors have built momentum through their Munster campaign and comfortable wins over Laois and Galway en route to their showdown with the Cats. Derek Lyng's Kilkenny have enjoyed a lengthy break, having won their sixth straight Leinster title. Expectation, as ever, in Kilkenny will be silverware. The expected return of Eoin Cody certainly will significantly help themthem in their aim of securing that, but first they must negotiate this Tipperary task. Here is all you need to know ahead of throw-in. Where and when is it on? The game will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Croke Park with a 4pm throw-in. Where can I watch the game? The match will be shown live on RTÉ2. Who's the referee? James Owens will be the man in the middle for the game. What can I read about and listen to on Our reporters will be building up to the semi-final throughout the weekend and previewing the game ahead of Saturday's throw-in. Kilkenny legend Brian Hogan insists there is more pressure on Kilkenny than there is on Tipperary. Craig Morgan chats Tipperary, and how being a teacher means he gets a pretty direct review of how games have gone. And finally, Anthony Daly, TJ Ryan, Mark Landers and the aforementioned Hogan preview the All-Ireland semi-finals on Dalo's Hurling Show.

Brian Hogan: 'Kilkenny are much further down the line. There is a bit more pressure on us'

"A clash of the old gladiators." That's how Anthony Daly put it, in reference to the All-Ireland SHC semi-final clash between Kilkenny and Tipperary. Routes have differed for the two. Kilkenny come into this weekend's battle at Croke Park on the back of a sixth straight Leinster title. Tipperary - having finished as the third team to progress through Munster - negotiated the challenges of both Laois and Galway with comfort. For Kilkenny legend Brian Hogan, the conversation in Tipperary may differ from that over the border among Cats supporters. He insists there will be real pressure to deliver when Derek Lyng and his black and amber troops arrive into the bowels of Croker on Sunday. "Tipp are on the crest of a wave now, you think back to last year, the minor win over us in the (Nowlan) Park... they were full value for the 20s win," Hogan said, speaking on Dalo's Hurling Show. "They were a far better side than us this year. That was a good 20s team. "(Liam) Cahill has done a great job with them this year... getting the Tipp public behind. It's a combination of both, the crowd are coming out to support the players and the players are giving them something them something to shout about. "It's an unusual one, it's been a few years since we've met each other at this stage. We (Kilkenny) are much further down the line. There is a bit more pressure on us, from the point of view of where Derek is with this group of players. We need to get over the line. "There was huge disappointment last year after the semi-final, and even more so the following day when Limerick were knocked out. I think the players themselves realised the opportunity lost, having been beaten by Limerick the previous two years. "Not taking away from Clare, who were full value for it, but the chances we left behind us in the first-half, we got no impact off the bench coming into the closing stages, whereas Clare had all the impact." The seven-time All-Ireland winner continued: "I think Derek has learned from that, he's looked to try and strengthen the panel. It's going to be an intriguing battle. I think - based on the experience we have in the group - I'm hoping that will be enough to get us over the line. These games against Tipp take on a life of their own." "Tipp will come up and have absolutely no fear and will be looking to have a good cut off us... but I'd say our lads, you know with the old enemy, there is a huge buzz around the fact that is us and Tipp in the semi-final." Eoin Cody should be fit enough to return to the Kilkenny forward line - a major boost for Lyng - but regardless of who is on the pitch, Hogan noted why the need for a result - and progression to the dance in a fortnight - is greater for his county. "I think there is (Pressure on Lyng), in comparison to Liam Cahill, absolutely, regardless of the result, as long as Tipp give a performance - not that they'd be happy to lose to Kilkenny - but the Tipp public will see progress. "They can see the success with the minors and the 20s and they can see the progress of the seniors this year, relative to last year, they have something to grab onto. The future looks good. "From a Kilkenny point of view, we're at a very different stage. This is a mature team that Derek has had for a couple of years, and yeah, there's pressure. There's pressure every year with Kilkenny. The cliché, you're measured on All-Irelands, that's the reality of it. "It's been a while since we've had one... For sure, there's pressure; that's just the nature of the job. It's no more than the pressure Derek will be putting on himself; he knows the job and the mantle he took up. "You won't get too long without an All-Ireland before the crowd starts to get itchy and starts to turn on you, so it's a big weekend."
