College Football Reporter Predicts Starting USC QB for Week 1

College Football Reporter Predicts Starting USC QB for Week 1 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The USC Trojans lost their starting quarterback for the 2024 season, as Miller Moss transferred to the Louisville Cardinals this offseason. There was some disappointment with his decision to leave, but with head coach Lincoln Riley, the program can bring in the best talent at the position. Advertisement They did that in the 2025 class, securing a commitment from five-star California native Husan Longstreet. The freshman is competing with 2024 transfer Jayden Maiava for the starting spot. He started several games after Moss was benched, but will he start for the 2025 season? On3's Pete Nakos believes it will be Maiava that will begin the game in Week 1 against the Missouri State Bears. USC quarterback Husan Longstreet (4)Diannie Chavez/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Nakos confirmed that sources close to On3 had said that Longstreet had a solid spring camp, and he had an interesting comment regarding the true freshman. "Sources have also told On3 that true freshman quarterback Husan Longstreet impressed this spring; the five-star recruit is pushing Maiava as they enter fall camp. Don't be surprised if Longstreet starts a game by the end of the season," wrote Nakos. Advertisement The USC Trojans have a relatively easy start to the season, with Missouri State as their first opponent, followed by the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Purdue Boilermakers. It's a nice start for whoever Lincoln Riley chooses to be the starter, with the first big test coming against the Michigan State Spartans in Week 4. The UNLV transfer was the beneficiary of Moss' benching last season. He knows if he does become the starter, Riley will not be scared to switch it up if he is underperforming. 'Worst Case Scenario' for USC Involves Key 2025 Returner Not Being 'The Answer'

'Worst Case Scenario' for USC Involves Key 2025 Returner Not Being 'The Answer' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. USC will either look dominant or become a disappointment in 2025. There's no in-between as Lincoln Riley is on the hot seat. Advertisement There's a "best case scenario" involving USC that paints the picture of an 11-1 team advancing to the College Football Playoffs. But Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports also dove into the worst case scenario for the 2025 Trojans. Fornelli looked at multiple factors that could topple USC's hopes for a Big Ten title or CFP appearance. But he particularly zeroed in on one area that he believed needed to be addressed. Simply because in his mind, this key returner isn't "the answer." USC coach Lincoln Riley© Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Fornelli believes quarterback play could doom the '25 Trojans. "They should've been more active in the portal looking for a quarterback because Jayden Maiava isn't the answer," Fornelli began with his "worst case scenario" argument. Advertisement Granted USC did tap into the portal to address QB. Former five-star and past Pac-12 rival Sam Huard is on board this season. Maiava himself is a past portal talent who came via UNLV. He ultimately snatched the starting QB reins toward the end of the '24 season. Maiava showed flashes of his potential late in '24. Plus earned the confidence of Riley to handle QB1 duties despite a push from five-star true freshman Husan Longstreet during the spring. Yet Maiava still feels the heat of this season -- given USC's impressive recruiting results while also attempting to rebuild itself from a dismal 7-6 campaign. But Maiava isn't the only "worst case scenario" label from Fornelli. He made this prediction if the worse happens to the Trojans. "The interior of the offensive line struggles, leading to problems in both the passing offense and the rushing offense. The same road struggles we saw last year continue in 2025, and the defense doesn't improve at all," he said. Advertisement Like Maiava, the defense is under immense pressure to improve. USC landed five-star defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart for the 2025 class. USC also hired Trovon Reed away from UCF to serve as cornerbacks coach. But even nabbed longtime NFL assistant Rob Ryan to serve as linebackers coach. Fornelli concludes that at worst, USC becomes a 5-7 team that starts 4-0 but begins to falter with a loss to Illinois. Then drops their rivalry game to UCLA. Related: USC Commit Earns Unique Comparison to Wrestling Legend This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 24, 2025, where it first appeared.

Lincoln Riley Reveals the QB Who Has Impressed Him Amid USC's QB1 Battle

Lincoln Riley Reveals the QB Who Has Impressed Him Amid USC's QB1 Battle originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The USC Trojans enter the 2025 college football season with an intriguing competition at quarterback under head coach Lincoln Riley. Advertisement Former four-star Miller Moss lost the job during the 2024 season before transferring to Louisville during the winter transfer portal window. Moss' replacement, Jayden Maiava, returns after starting the final four games, featuring just one loss to national champion runner-up Notre Dame. In seven total appearances, the former UNLV standout completed 59.8% of his passes for 1,201 yards with 11 touchdowns to six interceptions while adding four touchdowns on the ground. Maiava has the benefit having a handful of starts as a Trojan under his belt entering his redshirt junior season. Five-star signee Husan Longstreet, however, appears to be coming along nicely and even received some praise from Lincoln entering the summer. USC quarterback Husan Longstreet (4)Diannie Chavez/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images 'He works really hard at it, and it's fun to coach guys who're just a football guy,' Riley said via On3's Pete Nakos. 'Husan doesn't have a million other interests off the field — he loves ball. He's up at the facility all the time. He's just really into it.' Advertisement Longstreet (6-foot, 202 pounds) signed with the Trojans as the No. 4 quarterback (On3) and the No. 21 overall recruit when coming out of Centennial High School in Corona, California. Riley proved last season that the Trojans won't wait around long at the quarterback position, and that likely won't change as USC attempts to bounce back after a disappointing 7-6 season. Moss had shown flashes of ability, but the inconsistency was seemingly too much to overcome for a Riley offense that has produced three Heisman Trophy quarterbacks dating back to his stint at Oklahoma. It wouldn't be surprising to see Longstreet continue to push Maiava, or even make a valuable early-season appearance, as the two compete for the starting nod. Lincoln Riley Shares Exciting Update on 5-Star Freshman QB originally appeared on Athlon Sports. USC Trojans fans have plenty to be excited about when it comes to five-star freshman quarterback Husan Longstreet. The highly touted recruit has made a strong impression during spring practices, and head coach Lincoln Riley is already seeing signs of his potential. Advertisement Longstreet, who flipped to USC from Texas A&M, has been adjusting quickly to Riley's offensive system. His ability to process information, make quick decisions, and showcase his athleticism has stood out in early workouts. Riley praised Longstreet's dedication, emphasizing how much he loves the game, according to College Football insider Pete Nakos. 'It's fun to coach guys who're just a football guy,' Riley said. Longstreet has been working closely with USC's coaching staff to refine his mechanics and improve his command of the offense. Quarterbacks coach Luke Huard noted that Longstreet has embraced the challenge, showing a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn. Advertisement During his senior season at Centennial High School, Longstreet threw for 1,641 yards and 19 touchdowns, adding 494 rushing yards and six scores on the ground. His dual-threat ability makes him a dangerous weapon, and USC fans are eager to see how he develops under Riley's guidance. While Jayden Maiava is expected to be the Trojans' starter this season, Longstreet's rapid improvement has sparked conversations about his future role. If he continues to progress at this rate, he could be a major factor in USC's offense sooner rather than later. USC Running Back Makes Major NIL Announcement on Monday

USC Running Back Makes Major NIL Announcement on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The USC Trojans' 2025 college football recruiting class was one of the best in the country, ranking No. 15 nationally according to On3. Advertisement Headlined by five-star quarterback Husan Longstreet, they also signed the No. 1 junior college running back in the country Waymond Jordan. After winning the NJCAA D1 Football Offensive Player of the Year in 2024, Jordan makes his way to one of the most prestigious schools in the country to continue his football career. He ran for 1,614 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns in 12 games, both of which led the nation. On Monday, the top-ranked running back signed a massive NIL deal, where he is officially an athlete under C4 Energy. Advertisement The first big move for Jordan, the No. 12 ranked junior college player in the 2025 recruiting cycle, as he prepares for his jump to Big Ten football. Head coach Lincoln Riley looks to improve on what was a disappointing season for the Trojans' standards. Finishing with a 7-6 record in their first season in a new and difficult Big Ten leaves USC lots of room for improvement, and could use the explosiveness of Jordan. The likely starting running back, as he and New Mexico Lobos transfer Eli Sanders will be their top two backs, will look to relieve the pressure off quarterback Jayden Maiava, and a solid wide receiver core to help him as well. Boise State transfer Prince Strachan is a tall, physical receiver who can win 50/50 balls downfield, and returning receivers Ja'Kobi Lane and Makai Lemon look to improve on solid campaigns in 2024.
