'Rust' crew settles lawsuit against film producers and Alec Baldwin in fatal shooting

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A settlement has been reached in the civil lawsuit alleging negligence in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the Western movie 'Rust', according to court documents released Friday. The lawsuit was brought by three 'Rust' crew members seeking compensation for emotional distress from producers of 'Rust," including Alec Baldwin as co-producer and lead actor. The civil suit accused producers of failing to follow industry safety rules — allegations they denied. Terms of the settlement were not available. Attorneys for 'Rust' producers and the plaintiffs could not immediately be reached by phone or email. Plaintiffs to the lawsuit included Ross Addiego, a front-line crew member who witnessed at close range the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins at close during a rehearsal on October 2021 on a filmset ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe. A charge of involuntary manslaughter against Baldwin was dismissed at trial last year on allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defense. Separately, 'Rust' armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and completed an 18-month sentence in May. Prosecutors accused Gutierrez-Reed of unwittingly bringing live ammunition on set and failing to follow basic gun safety protocols. Baldwin was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal on a movie set outside Santa Fe when the revolver went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

‘Safe, inclusive' housing development planned

An innovative housing development based on Māori cultural principles is planned for Invercargill. The development, Te Kāwai, is a Te Pare Kauika Ltd project, a group formed to promote whānau-led solutions for the Southland community. During the public forum of the Invercargill City Council meeting earlier this week Te Kāwai Trust members Vanessa Hutchins, Martin Conway and Janice Lee explained the vision of the project to councillors. Ms Hutchins said the aim of the project was to provide supported housing for kaumātua (elderly people) and tangata whaikaha (disabled people). Māori principles of manaakititanga (care for others), whanaungatanga (family) and tino rangatiratanga (self determination) were core to the project. "We aspire to build a safe and inclusive culturally rich environment that offers companionship, dignity and assisted independence where residents feel connected not only to each other but to the whenua and the community." The development is expected to provide accommodation for up to 40 residents: 10 three-bedroom, shared homes for tangata whaikaha, two two-bedroom whānau accommodation, and 10 two-bedroom homes for kaumātua. Other facilities, including a community centre with whānau spaces, kitchen, and administration office, are part of the development. It was proposed the development would be sited at Newfield Park, a crown reserve which the council had earmarked for disposal in 2013. Ms Lee said the development would be a good place for people who needed to leave their own homes but were not ready for a rest-home. Invercargill was known for its innovation. "We kind of see it as a pilot that could be rolled out elsewhere." During the question time Mayor Nobby Clark asked who would fund the $14.4 million project. Ms Hutchins said the trust was working with various groups to explore how the funds could be raised. Mr Clark said Kai Tahu had first right of refusal if the land was put up for sale but there was no allowance in the budget for the trust to buy the land. Ms Hutchins said the group was in discussion with Kai Tahu about a possible partnership but it was too early in the process to say how much was needed to buy the land. Council mana whenua representative Pania Coote said the concept was amazing. "It's a needed place within our city and I just think having a tikanga type model of care is important because it is inclusive and it does treat the person as a whole."

Former N.S. school principal acquitted in historical sexual assault case

A former Halifax-area elementary school principal has been acquitted in a historical sexual assault case. Judge Alanna Murphy announced her decision in the matter of Steve Hutchins in a provincial courtroom in Dartmouth, N.S. on Tuesday. Hutchins, 60, was found not guilty in relation to one count each of sexual assault and sexual interference for offences alleged to have occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s. "I cannot be satisfied to the degree that I need to be to make a finding of guilt and consequently it would be dangerous for me to make findings of guilt in relation to the two counts before the court," Murphy told the court. A woman, now 43, alleged Hutchins assaulted her when she was attending grades 3 to 6 at elementary schools in the Eastern Passage area where Hutchins was a gym teacher. A trial was held over three days in March. The woman, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, testified Hutchins would hold her in tight embraces in supply rooms adjacent to the gyms in the schools, or sometimes in Hutchins's office. Hutchins denied all of the complainant's allegations while under questioning by his lawyer, Don Murray. During his testimony, Hutchins used photographs and hand-drawn floor plans to demonstrate the layout of the schools to suggest the sort of encounters the woman described would not have been possible. "I cannot say that the complainant's evidence was so persuasive and compelling that it rendered Mr. Hutchins's evidence unbelievable," Murphy said while delivering her decision. "I can say that at the very least his evidence has left me with reasonable doubt," she said. Murray declined a request from CBC News for a comment from his client. Acquitted in separate case Hutchins was also acquitted in a different historical sexual assault case last fall. In a separate incident, a woman accused him of giving her an open-mouthed kiss and touching her body at a social function at a home in Hammonds Plains when she was 14. The woman said she did not go to police until stories surfaced about charges laid against Hutchins involving another woman. The judge in that case said while she found the complainant's testimony to be credible, she was left with some doubt and so had to acquit Hutchins. MORE TOP STORIES
